For that reason, no clear knowledge exists about its actual range size and habitat preferences. We here applied a molecular taxonomic and phylogeographical approach based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA to shed light on its distribution and to infer its demographic history. Furthermore, we analysed aquifer types and water flow regimes to provide a clearer picture of the species’ ecological requirements. Our results indicate that N. puteanus is widely distributed north of the Alps, having its core range in the geomorphological natural region of the ‘South German Scarplands’ (SGS). Additionally, isolated satellite populations exist in the Taunus and the Sauerland, and two single individuals were collected in Luxembourg and in Austria, respectively. The species’ maximal distribution range reaches 756 km between the two single-specimen records and 371 km within the SGS. A very high haplotype diversity was observed, revealing the presence of seven haplotype groups. -

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) stands support relatively low amounts of CWD — 2 to 30 m3 ha-1. In April 2011, an EF3 tornado passed through the Oakmulgee Ranger District of the Talladega National Forest in the Fall Line Hills of Alabama. This disturbance resulted in the large addition of CWD to a longleaf pine woodland, and a rare opportunity to analyze how CWD can influence a managed, pine woodland. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of CWD on woody plant richness, density, and growth rate (quantified by height) in a longleaf pine woodland that experienced a catastrophic wind disturbance. A total of three 1 m2 quadrats were established against either side of a piece of CWD (> 3 m in length and ≥ 10 cm in diameter). Another quadrat was established at least 3 m away from the focal CWD piece. For each plot, the presence and height of every woody plant (< 5 cm dbh) were recorded. Sapling density, oak and hickory density, and organic matter were all found to be significantly higher in quadrats adjacent to CWD than away (all p < 0.05). -

(2013; Die Flechten Deutschlands) analysiert, wobei Naturräume die geografische Basis für die Analysen bilden. Bewertet werden Artendiversität, Exklusivität des Arteninventars, substratspezifische Eigenschaften (Substratbindung, pH-Werte und Nährstoffgehalt/Eutrophierung der besiedelten Substrate) und klimatische Faktoren (Licht, Luftfeuchte). Die artenreichs- ten Naturräume sind nach den Bayerischen Alpen, dem Schwarzwald und Odenwald-Spessart die ebenfalls sehr nieder- schlagsreichen Naturräume Eifel, Weserbergland, Harz, Fränkische Alb, Sauerland und Bayerisch-Böhmischer Wald. Die artenärmsten Landschaften liegen überwiegend im südlichen Teil des Nordostdeutschen Tieflandes. Die Exklusivität des Arteninventars eines Naturraumes wird als Anzahl der Arten, die in Deutschland nach 1950 nur in einem bis zwei Naturräumen nachgewiesen wurden, definiert. Assessing the Effect of Fire Regime on 1 Coarse Woody Debris Pamela Wright,2 Mark Harmon,3 and Fred Swanson4 Abstract This study used field data and modeling to examine how coarse woody debris (CWD) differs between two areas that experienced different fire regimes (120- to 300-year mean fire return intervals) in the 1500-1850 period. Although fire frequency and severity established the overall pattern of CWD succession, the interaction of fire regime with other controlling factors caused the differences in CWD mass at the landscape scale. CWD mass was almost twice as high in landscapes having an infrequent, stand-replacing fire regime (173 Mg/ha) as in landscapes having a moderately frequent, mixed-severity fire regime (95 Mg/ha). Factors that appear to have the greatest influence are decomposition rates, fire severity, fire frequency, and fuel consumption, suggesting that environment and stand structure—together with fire regime—are more important than fire regime alone. CWD levels have greater temporal variability in the infrequent, stand-replacing fire regime than in the mixed-severity regime, primarily because of the different timing of mortality. Introduction Although a few studies have examined the relationship between coarse woody debris (CWD) and natural disturbance, particularly fire, they have primarily examined the most simple, stand-replacing fires in which all trees are killed and no subsequent fire occurs for several hundred years. Studies and syntheses by Agee and Huff (1987), Harmon and others (1986), and Spies and others (1988) depict the succession of CWD conditions after fire. During a stand-replacing fire, large amounts of biomass are converted from live to dead matter.
