Film Club Sky 328 DECEMBER Newsletter Freesat 306 2019 Virgin 445 Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 DECEMBER newsletter Freesat 306 2019 Virgin 445 Dear Renown Club Members & Supporters of TPTV, What a year it’s been! We have grown to be the largest independent TV channel in the UK in just short of five years of broadcasting – quite an accomplishment for a channel run by just three people! We’ve rescued and revived many lost films and been lucky enough to have archives opened for us to license from. We have released 12 DVD titles as well as our first music CD and created two amazing annual events celebrating TV and film history, with hosts of stars happy to appear and share their memories with us. However, our work is not yet done. Next year we hope to encourage more of the major studios to license British films and series to us, the rights of which are owned in the USA, as well as persuading more libraries to allow us to release unseen titles on DVD. Long live Talking Pictures TV! We could not have achieved any of this without your support and we are happy to welcome more viewers and club members, so wear your Film Club badges with pride and spread the word; write to your local papers, ring your favourite radio stations and tell them about the revival of the golden era of film and TV. Ask everyone to tune their TVs into Freeview 81, Sky 328, Freesat 306 and Virgin 445. This year we have our best Christmas schedule of entertainment yet and we are very proud to announce that we will be bringing Lionel Jeffries’ wonderful British filmThe Amazing Mr Blunden to TV screens on Christmas Day at 7pm and New Year’s Day at 3:25pm, along with a marvellous medley of films and series for you to enjoy over the festive period. Our handy Christmas TV guide with all the details is on pages 24 and 25. It’s been wonderful to see such an enthusiastic reaction to the return of Catweazle to our TV screens. A whole generation of new fans are being introduced to Geoffrey Bayldon, the incredible actor who played the part of the wizard. He didn’t just act, he WAS Catweazle. Our new ‘elec-trickery’ sweatshirt inspired by Catweazle is on page 20. It makes a lovely gift and is ideal for keeping warm this winter, so call us on the ‘telling bone’ if you would like to order one! We are delighted to see that we are now in The Telegraph TV listings, as well as the Radio Times, TV Times and many others. If we are not listed in your favourite magazine or newspaper, do write to them – only you can make the difference. It’s been a joy to speak to so many of you about The Imperial War Museums season and there will be more war films from their archive to see during December. Many of you have asked if these are available on DVD; we have found a small selection which can be seen on pages 2, 3 and 4. We will soon be announcing some of the guests appearing at our festival of film in St Albans on March 22nd. We are down to the last 100 tickets now, so do make sure you purchase yours soon if you are planning to join us. If you don’t know what to give as a thank you for Christmas dinner, our Scrooge apron and DVD make perfect festive gifts – (see page 21). I always wear my Scrooge pinny when I’m stuffing the turkey! All that remains is for us to thank you all for your support – without you we simply wouldn’t be here. I hope you all enjoy some proper Christmas telly on the channel over the coming month! What’s Ebeneezer Scrooge’s favourite Christmas game? Wishing you all the best for the New Year – Mean-opoly! and a very Merry Christmas! DVD press release BBC TV’s acclaimed Ghost Stories finally come to DVD in five individual volumes and a box set from the BFI First releases Whistle and I’ll Come to You (1968 & 2010 versions) and The Stalls of Barchester & A Warning to the Curious on 20 August 2012 The BFI will make all twelve of the classic BBC films from A Ghost Story for Christmas series available on DVD this year, with the first two volumes – each containing a double bill of chilling tales – released on 20 August. The first release features Jonathan Miller’s Whistle and I’ll Come to You (1968), with Sir Michael Hordern, paired with the 2010 adaptation of the same chilling tale, starring John Hurt and directed by Andy de Emmony. Released alongside it is a pairing of The Stalls of Barchester (1971), starring Robert Hardy and receiving its DVD premiere, and A Warning to the Curious (1972), with Peter Vaughan, both directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Each set comes with numerous special features and illustrated booklets, full details on page two. As a Christmas treat during the 1970s, the BBC screened adaptations of the classic ghost stories of MR James, the Cambridge academic and author of some of the most spine- tingling tales in the English language. Most of the instalments, which were broadcast to terrified viewers in the dead of winter, were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, who has been interviewed for new introductions on these BFI releases. With only three of the twelve tales previously released on DVD (by the BFI in 2002, and long since deleted), the films in this brilliant series have been high on many film and TV fans' 'most wanted' DVD lists.

  • Film, Television and Video Productions Featuring Brass Bands
Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light.

“Vive l’Angleterre” Exploring the Relationship between Britain and Europe in Charlotte Brontë’s Novels Sunniva Sveino Strand A Thesis Presented to The Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages University of Oslo In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the MA Degree Spring 2015 ii “Vive l’Angleterre” Exploring the Relationship between Britain and Europe in Charlotte Brontë’s Novels Sunniva Sveino Strand iii © Sunniva Sveino Strand 2015 “Vive l’Angleterre”: Exploring the Relationship between Britain and Europe in Charlotte Brontë’s Novels Sunniva Sveino Strand http://www.duo.uio.no Print: Reprosentralen, University of Oslo iv Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore the complex relationship Charlotte Brontë’s novels have with Europe. It will examine how religion, sexuality and morality, and language are used in order to create a British identity that is contrasted to a European one, but also how these binaries are broken down via the romantic unions of British and European characters and the appeal of certain aspects of Catholicism, European sexuality and the French language. The role of Europe has often been overlooked in favour of the British Empire in Brontë scholarship, and this thesis posits that Europe is integral to the establishment of a British national identity in Brontë’s works. Furthermore, those who have studied the author’s presentation of Europe have often limited themselves to the two novels that are set on the Continent, but I argue that much is lost in disregarding the remainder of Brontë’s works. The findings of this thesis suggest that despite the rampant Europhobia found in Brontë’s works, these novels stand out amongst their contemporaries in envisaging romantic unions between Britons and Europeans and that the British characters need something, or someone, European in order to be fulfilled.

HANCOCK’S HALF HOUR COLLECTIBLES Notes to Accompany Volume 3 All photographs copyright (C) BBC (unless otherwise stated) The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society is delighted to have given its support to the production of this new and unique series concerning the lost works of Tony Hancock. Tony Hancock: BBC Publicity Shot for Hancock’s Half Hour, November 1956 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its creation in 1976, the THAS has dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock and, more crucially, to finding his broadcasts that were missing from the archives. Over the decades, these efforts have yielded a wealth of material, most notably lost episodes of his most beloved work on Hancock’s Half Hour for both television and radio. Many of these have now been located and returned to the BBC; some feature in this special series of Collectibles, now into 1 its third volume. However, many still remain lost at this time. In addition, our efforts have found other material – shows recorded before Hancock became a household name – from series such as Calling All Forces, Variety Bandbox and Star Bill. Again, examples of these can be found in this series. In the previous volumes, there was an extensive analysis of missing recordings from Hancock’s radio career, and, as ever, we remain hopeful that some of these recordings will emerge from private collections or, perhaps, the archives of the BBC or other institutions. In these notes, we will focus on a number of missing recordings and shows outside the ‘core’ work Hancock did on his eponymous series and those that preceded it.

Reprinted for Kristen Dammers, Sapient [email protected] All rights reserved. Reproduction and/or distribution in whole or in part in electronic, paper or other forms without written permission is prohibited. When Cultures Collide: Leading Across Cultures, Third Edition Chapter 13: Britain Overview For decades the British film industry, enriched by the talents of such actors as Alec Guinness, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Alastair Sim, George Cole and Charles Laughton, has put the typical Englishman on the screen for the world to see. The BBC, in such admirable programs as Upstairs, Downstairs and Yes, Minister, has reinforced the image. The Englishman dresses in tweeds or a three-piece pin-striped suit and a Burberry raincoat on rainy days. He wears a bowler hat, carries a tightly furled, black umbrella with a cane handle and has a pink newspaper tucked under his left armpit. He goes to church on Sunday mornings and eats roast beef with Yorkshire pudding for Sunday lunch. He is a man of principle, insists on fair play for underdogs, does things in a proper manner and shows more affection for horses, cats and dogs than for children, foxes and grouse. He probably went to Eton and Oxford (Cambridge?) and frequents Ascot, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Lord's and Wentworth. He believes in the Monarchy, the Empire and the Conservative Party. When not in his Club (no ladies allowed), he sits in the local pub with gardeners and game wardens, with whom he sips warm beer called real ale.

A crítica Intercourse. Contraceptive. Spermatogenesis. Sexual climax. Panties. These were not the sort of words movie theatre audiences were used to hearing on the screen in 1959 but director Otto Preminger changed all that with his controversial courtroom drama, Anatomy of a Murder.
