6TH BELAU GAMES

FINAL REPORT

KOROR, REPUBLIC OF 10 MARCH – 15 MARCH

On behalf of the 6th Belau Games Organizing Committee, let me take this time to congratulate all athletes, coaches, state representative, officials, sports federations and volunteers for a job well done. Without your participations we wouldn’t have a Belau Games. Even thought the time was short when we agreed to have the Belau Games I’m confident in saying that all states and organizing committee did an outstanding job in preparing their athletes and preparing to organize and run the games. Throughout the games we know there is always going to be mistakes made, especially when each team or individual wants to represent their states well. Fortunately, all the protest were addressed with the tournament director and the Organizing Committee didn’t have to hear any protest. I believe this shows the growth and confidence in our sports federations as well as our athlete’s in their respective sports. Thank you all very much for being supportive and understanding during the games and we hope that in two years we can continue what we have started today. Respectfully yours,

Tutii Joe Chilton Chair Belau Games Organizing Committee

ORGANIZATION The Belau Games Organizing Committee consisted of the staff of PNOC, Presidents of Sports Federations, staff from Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs and staff from Office of President. Without their valuable expertise, knowledge and hard work, the Belau Games would not have run smoothly. It is these quiet support that makes any program a success. Thank you again for your support and hard work, sometimes we don’t recognize the individual but only see the end result. You know what you have done and you know you were part of the success a thank you is not enough. Kom Kmal Mesaul A special thanks and recognition to all the state reps who meet every day at 7:00 am at the PNOC conference room. Medical Services

One of the issues with State reps was the new MOH Health Fee, it was that the fee was instituted, it was the way medical staff asked if the athletes and state had money to pay. Again, I personally didn’t witness this complaint but it was brought up in the morning meetings. For the organizers, the letter from MOH was received on 9 March 2006 and the opening ceremony was 10 March 2006, the Belau Games Chair didn’t prepare ahead of time to forsee this issue. For future games, the organizers will have to write a letter of waiver to the MOH or see if states can work with Moylans or Melekau to get Health insurance for athletes.

The number one health issue was dehydration and pulled or strained muscles and joints from athletes who were not prepared to participate in the heat or didn’t prepare ahead of time to participate. Our recommendation is to notify states at least (if possible) 6 months in advance before the games for that states can get there athletes ready. Or if necessary PNOC and Organizing Committee came start advertising to the community and athletes to prepare themselves for Belau Games.

Media

The newspapers in Palau we good in covering the different sports, specifically the Archery and Beach Wrestling because they were new sports.

The problem was with the Organizing Committee, we need to re-train or stress the need for Tournament Directors to post their results on their website. We had two WIA students trying to do the work, but some sports didn’t even send their results to the office and attempts to get the results were not fruitful, even though we have given out Airtime for cell phones.

Our recommendation is next event that needs to be organized PNOC can look at PNCC to develop a group to have 775 numbers that will be given out to Tournament Directors, Officials and Organizers, or possibly investing in the hand held radios that the police could use. This aspect of organizing is important and the Chairman didn’t fully realize it until the results weren’t being sent in.

Finally, the organizing committee contract Mr. Lorraine Rivera to take pictures and update the website and then do the final CD for the states. She did a great job but the problem we faced was that she was only one person who was caught with time conflicts. She is covering Beach Volleyball when Archery needs her to cover the awarding ceremony at Catholic Mission Field.

Our recommendation is to contract one media specialist like Ms. Rivera and ask her to either provide 2 assistants to take pictures with her so that we don’t lose out because of time conflict or PNOC will contract 3 individuals to do the work.

Final Recommendations

Overall the staff at PNOC, the Volunteers, Sports Federations, States and Athletes were the main reason why the 5th Belau Games was such a success. Not on person can do all the work and it took everyone and their best efforts to make these games a success.

However, we can always learn from our experiences so these are the lessons we learned during the 5th Belau Games. These lessons are just recommendations to PNOC to further research and implement as they see fit.
