    Peloponnese Autumn Bulbs of Sparta A Greentours Trip Report 29th October to 6th November 2011 Led by Tristan Lafranchis Day 1 Saturday 29th October From London to Diakopto Everyone is at Heathrow bright and early and before long we are on our way to Athens’s spanking new airport where the group meets Tristan. After two hours drive we reach our hotel at Diakopto and have a nice dinner at Costa’s before a much needed sleep. Day 2 Sunday 30st October Kerinitis valley: Plataniotissa & Kerinia Weather is sunny as we leave Diakopto to the Kerinitis valley. After a short stop to enjoy the scenery of hillsides and mountains above the blue Gulf of Corinth, we drive to a narrow gully shaded by Plane trees. The stony slopes are home of many large-flowered Cyclamen hederifolium, perhaps var. confusum, whilst some beautiful Campanula versicolor grow on the vertical rocks. We then park the van by a chapel on the top of a hillside. A nice Colchicum bivonae is waiting for us on the edge of the parking place. It is still cool at this altitude (1000 m) when we start to explore the hillside. We first find a dozen and then hundreds of Biarum tenuifolium, a strange and dark plant usually found in very small number and surprisingly abundant today. On the rocky edge of the ridge we discover a very good show of perfectly fresh Sternbergia sicula visited by a Clouded Yellow. As temperatures rise Wall Browns and Brown Argus start to fly around. Walking down from the van we find nice Crocus cancellatus and a few more Colchicum bivonae.

Seifried University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries, Amherst, MA, USA ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4372-2164, email: [email protected] Abstract The Mani peninsula is a semi-arid landscape with few natural sources of fresh water, yet it supported a dense population during the Late Byzantine and Ottoman periods. This paper reviews the archaeological and historical evidence for water- management practices in Mani, concentrating on its domestic-scale hydraulic infrastructure (cisterns and saltpans) and the ports and harbours along its coasts. The data point to a critical shift in household-level social organization at the turn of the 18th century, underscoring the fact that people living in supposedly ‘peripheral’ regions like Mani nevertheless engaged in far-reaching networks of contact and exchange.

    Peloponnese in Autumn A Greentours Trip Report 20th October to 27th October 2019 Led by Kurt Vickery and Paul Green Daily Reports & Systematic Lists by Paul Day 1 Sunday 20th October Arrival to Peloponnese Kurt was already at Athens airport as he had dropped off the group from the Delphi trip. Jane and Michael who were on that trip continued onto this trip. The majority of the group flew in from Heathrow. As my flight arrived a little later from Dublin, and Kurt couldn’t take everybody in his vehicle, Brenda, Gail and Jacqueline waited with me, for Walter to arrive in from Chania as he had been on the Crete trip. We all meet up at the hotel at Kefalari, where we went to a nearby taverna for our evening meal, enjoying one of the many Greek Salads we were to eat, along with other delights. Day 2 Monday 21st October Mycenae & journey to Gythio We woke to clear blue skies. Hanging out of a wall in the village was Ballota nigra (Black Horehound), and by a small stream grew Epilobium hirsutum (Great Willowherb), both in flower. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was heard calling. We admired a very large Platanus orientalis (Oriental Plane Tree), pondering over how old it might be, in the centre of Kefalari. With our suitcases loaded back into the vehicles, we said our farewells and headed off. Our first stop was on the roadside in the hope of finding our first Crocus, which after a little searching I managed to find, these were Crocus cancellatus mazziaricus, small white stars dotted about in the bare earth between the many well eaten spiny shrubs.

    Jon van Leuven Blank Spots and Grey Zones: Medieval Mapping in Southern Greece Abstract Early maps of Mediterranean areas differ in important respects not only from contemporary reality, but also from the increasing wealth of topographical data in written records since high medieval times. This contrast exposes both the mapmakers and authors to complex questions about their methods and motives, which have seldom been discussed adequately. Some of the problems are treated here in the case of southern Greece and focusing on a small but significant region, the western Mani peninsula. Despite substantial past study of its toponyms and monuments, these two categories still correlate poorly with each other, and the reasons must be sought in the region's historical role from the Frankish period onward. Confusion about it can be seen already in the "Chronicle of Morea" and comparable documents, leading understandably to the vague or artificial representations on maps, which reflect diverse traditions such as the Ptolemaic and portolanic. There are also progressive indications of older toponyms deriving not from local survival, but from late reintroduction through Byzantine literary sources and/or Western influence, causing further errors in their localization. A prominent example of the issues involved will be found in the so-called castle of Leuktron/Beaufort, whose site has long been thought certain but should arguably be reassigned to the vicinity of Cape Matapan. The evidence often suggests that previous interpretations would benefit from closer combination of the verbal, visual and field material, as well as from publication of hitherto ignored archives in Italy and Turkey.

    Useful Info visiting Mani, Greece Interesting places to visit Mistras and Monemvasia: These two picturesque places are not so close, but should be visited as they are well known and important for their history, their castles and their unique view. South Eastern side of Mani: Follow the route from Drosopigi towards the bottom of the “middle Peloponnese finger” (the Southernmost point of whole Europe), and visit Kotronas, Nifi, Kokkala, Lagia, Vathia, Marmari, Porto Kagio and Cape Tainaron. Then on the way back towards the Western part of Mani, you may visit Gerolimenas, Diro Caves, Aeropolis, Limeni, Neo Oitilo, Oitilo, and moreover Stoupa & Kardamyli. On the Northern side you may visit Gythion, Marathonisi and Kelefa castle. Nearby the Guest House is the old and the new village of Drosopigi, the water spring, the old olive press and the castle with the old church in Palea Karioupolis. Best Beaches, close to “Philothea”: Skoutari, Kamares, Ageranos, Vathi, Mavrovouni (all of them are on the Eastern side). Other beaches: Stoupa, Kardamili, Foneas (on the Western side) and Kotronas, Nifi, Marmari (on the South Eastern side). Une nouvelle espèce de tortue terrestre dans le Péloponnèse (Grèce) Roger BOUR Laboratoire des Reptiles et Amphibiens, Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, 25 rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris, France The marginated tortoise Testudo marginata (Schoepff, 1795) is the largest European tortoise. Its natural range covers the main part of the southern half of the Balkanic Peninsula (fig. 2), but no subspecies have yet been described. Recently, a dwarf population was noticed in the Peloponnese, precisely on the western flank of the Taygetos mountain, between Kalamata (Messenia) and Areopoli (Laconia) (fig.4). Several field trips were achieved to precise the range, the biology and the conditions of the contact with the adjoining populations of margined tortoises, a work first pioneered by Heinz WEISSINGER (1945-1993). As a result of these studies, we are now able to recognize a new species here described. Among others, two characters allow to easily identify these tortoises: a moderate carapace length in the adults (means: males 212 mm, females 210 mm, versus males >270 mm, females > 260 mm within Testudo marginata); a dull coloration of the shell, the vivid arrangement of deep black and pale yellow of T. marginata being replaced by a dull blackish ground with dirty cream yellow or horn- coloured patches flecked with grey. The type locality is Kardamili (Messenia), ca. 30 km S of Kalamata. The geographic range roughly extends from the close surroundings of the latter town to the pass 24 Dumerilia 2 separating the Mani peninsula from the Taygetos, i.e. a narrow belt of phrygana and olive-grove along the sea border up to the altitude of ca.
