Evidence from Rio De Janeiro's Favelas
Drug Battles and School Achievement: Evidence from Rio de Janeiro's Favelas Joana Monteiro and Rudi Rocha∗ July 2013 Abstract This paper examines the effects of armed conflicts between drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro's favelas on student achievement. We explore variation in violence that occurs across time and space when gangs battle over territo- ries. Within-school estimates indicate that students from schools exposed to violence score less in math exams. Our findings suggest that the effect of vio- lence increases with conflict intensity, duration, and proximity to exam dates; and decreases with the distance between the school and the conflict location. Finally, we find that school supply is an important mechanism driving the achievement results; armed conflicts are associated with higher teacher absen- teeism, principal turnover, and temporary school closings. The lyrics’ presence allows filmmakers to digress from sequential imagery through introduction of nonlinear visual elements. I will analyze these surrealist film elements through several post-modern philosophies to better understand how this animated audio-visual synthesis resides in the larger world of art theory and its relationship to the popular music video. -

Women Directors in 'Global' Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism And
Women Directors in ‘Global’ Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Representation Despoina Mantziari PhD Thesis University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies March 2014 “This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution.” Women Directors in Global Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Aesthetics The thesis explores the cultural field of global art cinema as a potential space for the inscription of female authorship and feminist issues. Despite their active involvement in filmmaking, traditionally women directors have not been centralised in scholarship on art cinema. Filmmakers such as Germaine Dulac, Agnès Varda and Sally Potter, for instance, have produced significant cinematic oeuvres but due to the field's continuing phallocentricity, they have not enjoyed the critical acclaim of their male peers. Feminist scholarship has focused mainly on the study of Hollywood and although some scholars have foregrounded the work of female filmmakers in non-Hollywood contexts, the relationship between art cinema and women filmmakers has not been adequately explored. The thesis addresses this gap by focusing on art cinema. It argues that art cinema maintains a precarious balance between two contradictory positions; as a route into filmmaking for women directors allowing for political expressivity, with its emphasis on artistic freedom which creates a space for non-dominant and potentially subversive representations and themes, and as another hostile universe given its more elitist and auteurist orientation. -

Gilles Lellouche INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTION NOTES
A FILM BY Gilles Lellouche INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTION NOTES CONTACTS INTERNATIONAL MARKETING INTERNATIONAL PUBLICITY Lucie MICHAUT Alexandre BOURG [email protected] [email protected] SYNOPSIS A group of 40-something guys, all on the verge of a mid-life crisis, decide to form their local pool’s first ever synchronized swimming team – for men. Braving the skepticism and ridicule of those around them and trained by a fallen champion trying to pull herself together, the group set out on an unlikely adventure, and on the way will rediscover a little self-esteem and a lot about themselves and each other. After Narco and The Players, Sink or Swim is the first film you’ve made as a solo director. Did you have difficulty launching a solo project, or was it just a question of timing? A little of both! Most of all, I needed to find a subject that really spoke to me and would enable me to make a film even more personal than Narco. As for The Players, that was a group project. I really enjoyed making both of those films, but neither was intimately linked to who I am. All of this took some time because after Narco, my “actors’ films” were the center of attention. How long has it taken to bring Sink or Swim to life? Five years. In fact, it was eight years ago that I began writing a script that already contained a few of the ideas in Sink or Swim. I wanted to examine the weariness – or perhaps the somewhat latent depression – that I sensed in people of my generation or even more generally in France. -

Monte and his daughter Willow live together aboard a spacecraft, in complete isolation. A man whose strict self-discipline is a shield against desire, Monte fathered her against his will. His sperm was used to inseminate the young woman who gave birth to her. They were members of a crew of prisoners – death row inmates. Guinea pigs sent on a mission. Now only Monte and Willow remain. Through his daughter, he experiences the birth of an all-powerful love. Together, father and daughter approach their destination – the black hole in which time and space cease to exist. How did High Life come about? A while back, an English producer asked me if I wanted to participate in a collection of films called Femmes Fatales. At first, I wasn’t that interested, but after thinking it over, I agreed. The project took ages to get off the ground. There was no money. It took 6 or 7 years to hammer out a coproduction: France, Germany, Poland and eventually America. During that time, I went to England and the States to meet with actors. The actor I dreamed of for the lead role of Monte was Philip Seymour Hoffman, because of his age, his weariness – but he died mid- route. -
