Sprague High School • 503-399-3261 • Chad Barkes, Principal WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO!: ASB Studios: We had a blast working with Sprague Alumni Richard Riffle to create our Avengers Endgame trailer spoof! The goal was to bond as a team while letting everyone know that WE ARE HERE TO FIGHT FOR YOU! We hope it was a positive message and a bright spot in your news feeds! ASB SEPTEMBER UPDATE Comprehensive Distance Learning is underway, and while learning is occurring, we can all feel the distance. While we struggle daily to connect to the internet, to CANVAS, or to our ZOOM calls, the biggest struggle is to connect with each other. Sustainable Food for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness: Recently, ASB President Avery Cassler and VP Delaney Wehr prepared and pitched a service It feels like the 2020-2021 school project to the South Salem Connect group requesting funds for materials to build year failed to fully load and that we raised beds to grow sustainable food for those currently experiencing homelessness are constantly experiencing “poor at Cascade Gateway Park. connection.” We were excited to have our request However, that has not stopped our granted by generous donations from students from reaching out to SEE the our community including half of the needs in our school, our community, 630 dollars being donated by City and our state. Our mission this year is to learn to truly SEE people. The experience of being homeless is dehumanizing, and a huge part of the outreach at Church at the Park is to rehumanize individuals that struggle to separate their experience from their identity. A huge part of the humanization process is helping these individuals feel truly SEEN and loved. We worked with a former Sprague graduate and recent employee, John Marshall, who is the project manager at Church at the Park. We will be returning to the park on October third to build the final two raised beds!

SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS WHAT’S COOKIN’?: President Avery Cassler: Avery is currently attending virtual Sports Coordinator Brody Whetzel: To be a sports coordinator South Salem Connect meetings on her own time to better learn in a year without sports almost seems impossible. HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL LIGHT THE TORCH: If you read through to the end, thank you! We want more than ever to include you all in what is going on. My job as ASB Coordinator is to help these students lead and serve to the best of their ability and from areas of passion! I want to connect them with the opportunities, training, and resources they need to develop as young leaders and to serve their constituents. It has been an absolute privilege to work with these students as they have given up many hours during their summer to prepare for this crazy year! Now that you know what they are all working on, if you have any ideas or resources to help us better achieve these goals, or to better SEE people, please do not hesitate to reach out! You can reach out directly to the student if you wish to speak to them personally or can reach out to me as well. Thank you all for pouring into the lives of our students and for helping us collectively LIGHT THE TORCH! -Chris Trammell ASB Coordinator | Outward Leadership

SPRAGUE HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE OLYMPIANS ATHLETICS

REMINDER If you plan on participating in season one athletics, you must have your resgistration completed by October 5th. You must be enrolled in three classes and have a current sport physical on file.

We are excited to announce that Trevor Bodine has been selected as our Girl’s Head Basketball Coach. Coach Bodine comes to us from North Marion High School, where he has been for the last 4 seasons leading his team to conference championships with multiple State placing teams and he was voted two-time Conference Coach of the Year. During his time at North Marion, he was asked to step in to coach their volleyball team even though he had never coached volleyball before, and their team had a successful season. Prior to North Marion, he coached several years at South Salem High School and was lead varsity assistant during their two State Championship titles. Coach Bodine is motivational and is known for developing his players and helping them exhibit a strong work ethic by demonstrating diligence, patience, and respect for others.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS, It’s amazing how fast we are moving through September as we plan for holding voluntary athletic workouts during Season 1 starting in October. We have already sent out information to parents in emails and posted information on our Sprague Athletic website (http://spraguehs.com/ athletics/index.php). Season 1 is really an extension of Summer workouts and gives us an opportunity to work with students with safety protocols in place and have some activity. We hosted over 3,500 workouts at Sprague this past Summer following safety protocols. Many of our coaches are teachers and are working hard at launching a year of learning and coaching multiple sports. Depending on our coaches and their personal schedules, work out schedules will vary, and coaches will communicate out what voluntary activities will be happening at Sprague. Please register your child on Family ID found on our Sprague website (http://spraguehs.com) under the Athletics tab. Each student must have an updated sports physical completed on file for Season 1 and for the entire duration of specific sports season that students want to participate during the year. Season 1 is voluntary and free, as there is no cost, and students may sign up for multiple sports during this season only. Please remember, the level of activity in sports will vary depending on student participation rates and coaches’ schedules as we are not currently funding full coaching staffs. You must be registered and a have current physical on file by October 5, 2020 to be eligible to participate in Season 1.
