Yale Agrarian Studies workshop Feb 27, 2009 Kathleen Morrison A brief biography of the paper: This paper is not part of a book project but is a draft of a stand-alone article. The paper emerged from intersections between my interest in contemporary environmental and political issues and two longer-term larger projects dealing with: (1) rural landscape history and place- making in southern India (Daroji Valley: Landscape History, Place, and the Making of a Dryland Reservoir System, 2009); and (2) the historical construction of marginalized socioeconomic strategies (hunters, pastoralists, dry farmers, landless laborers) and identities in South Asia over the last 600 years (Oceans of Dharma, in prep.). Apologies for stray references and incomplete sections – this began as a talk, was revised into a written paper, and is still in the process of being cut down from a much longer text and beaten into publishable form. Dharmic Projects, Imperial Reservoirs, or New Temples of India? An Historical Perspective on Dams in India Kathleen D. Morrison University of Chicago DRAFT Dharmic Projects, Imperial Reservoirs, or New Temples of India? An Historical Perspective on Dams in India Modern irrigation schemes in tropical areas are, almost without exception, social, ecological, and economic disasters. They necessarily lead to the flooding of vast areas of forest and agricultural land, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the spreading of waterborne diseases like malaria and schistosomiasis. In addition, they are badly run, poorly maintained and the irrigated land is soon salinised or waterlogged, while the reservoirs where the water is stored, rapidly silt up.

  • Preliminary Observations on Odonata Fauna of Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Ballari District, North Karnataka (India)
Biodiversity Journal , 2017, 8 (4): 875–880 Preliminary observations on Odonata fauna of Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Ballari District, North Karnataka (India) Harisha M. Nijjavalli * & Basaling B. Hosetti Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Wildlife and Management, Kuvempu University, Jnana Sahyadri, Shanka - raghatta-577451, Shimoga, Karnataka, India *Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The preliminary study was conducted from February 2011 to January 2012 at Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Hosept. The study revealed the occurrence of a total of 22 species of Odonates in 19 genera belonging to 5 families from the study area. Among them the order Anisoptera which includes dragonflies was predominated with 17 (76%) species, followed by the order Zygoptera which includes damselflies with 5 (24%) species. The family Libel - lulidae was found to be the most dominant by 13 species with high percentage composition i.e., 76%, followed by the family Coenagrionidae by 3 species with 40% of total odonates species recorded from the study area. The status based on the frequency of occurrence of shows that 8 (36%) were common, 5 (23%) were very common, 3 (14%) were occasional, 4 (18%) were rare and 2 (9%) were very rare. The study highlights the importance and also provides the baseline information on status and composition of Odonates at Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Ballari District of North Karnataka for research on their biology and the conservation. VIRUPAKSHA TEMPLE, HAMPI (Motif on the cover) The illustration on the cover page presents a view of the Gopura (Tower) at the entrance to the sacred shrine of VifUpaksha at Hampi in Bellary District. The temple dates back to a period ante rior to the founding of the Vijayanagar Empire and the city, as is evidenced by an epigraph dated 1199 A.D. which refers to a grant to an individual during the reign of King Kalideva of Kurugodu. Lord Virupaksha is very closely associated with the VijayanagarEmpire and Harihara I (1336-56* A.D.) the founder of the Vijayanagar city, is said to have made several additions to the temple. Sri Krishna deva Raya (1509-1529 A.D.) on the occa.sion of his coronation, according to an epigraph, built the beautiful rangamantapa (in front of the Virupaksha shrine) and also the big eastern gopura. This gopura is unique in that nowhere in South India does one come across a seven-storied tower which is a hollow pyramid 120' high and with a staircase within its thick walls, running upto the very top. The temple has shrines dedicated to Vjrupaksha (also called Pampapathi), Pampa and Bhuva nesvari, the consorts of the Lord.

INDIAN ARCHAEOLOGY 1987-88 —A REVIEW EDITED BY M.C.JOSHI Director General Archaeological Survey of India PUBLISHED BY THE DIRECTOR GENERAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA NEW DELHI 1993 Cover : TisseruStupa,Leh,Ladakh Cover layout & design: Raj Nath Kaw 1992 ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Price :Rs. 250.00 PRINTED AT BENGAL OFFSET WORKS, 335, KHAJOOR ROAD, KAROL BAGH, NEW DELHI-1 10005. PHONE: 524200,7510455 PREFACE I am happy to place before the scholars the Indian Archaeology 1987-88—A Review not very long after the publication of the previous issue. We are making efforts to bring the publication of the Review up to date; this, however, would depend on timely submission of material by contributors. It has been our experience that, in many cases, several reminders have to be given for sending material to us for inclusion in the Review which results in delay of its publication. I am sure, with the cooperation of different institutions and the State Departments of Archaeology and Museums and my own colleagues in different Branches and Circles of the Survey it would be possible for us to maintain regularity of its publication. The present issue of the Review is more voluminous than the previous ones and thus reflects also increased activities in different fields of archaeology. Out of several excavations reported in this issue, I may mention the work at Banawali, Thanesar, Sanghol, Hampi, Sannathi, Daulatabad, Lalitagiri, Udaigiri, Fatehpur Sikri, Sravasti, Balikeshwar, Chandel, Harsud, etc. by the Survey, at Kuntasi jointly by the Deccan College, Pune, and the Gujarat State Department of Archaeology, at Mangalkot by the University of Calcutta, at Kotasur by the Visvabharati, Maihar by the Allahabad University, Ganeshwar by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Rajasthan State and at Shikarpur by the Department of Archaeology, Government of Gujarat.
