DOUD, ELIVERA M.: Collection of Family Memorabilia and Newspapers re Dwight D. Eisenhower

The Elivera M. Doud Collection, which was received by the Eisenhower Museum in segments between 1961 and 1963, was transferred from the Eisenhower Museum to the Library in 1970.

The Elivera M. Doud Collection is subject to the terms of Mamie Doud Eisenhower’s letter of gift dated September 19, 1966. Literary rights in any writings of Mamie Doud Eisenhower found within this collection passed to the people of the United States upon her death in 1979.

Under the terms of the September 1966 letter of gift, the following classes of items were to be withheld from research use:

1. Papers relating to the family and private business affairs of Mamie Eisenhower’s family.

2. Papers relating to the family and private business affairs of other persons who have corresponded with Mamie and/or her family

3. Papers relating to investigations of individuals or to appointments and personnel matters.

4. Papers containing statements made by or to Mamie Eisenhower’s family in confidence unless in the judgment of the Director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library the reason for the confidentiality no longer exists.

5. All other papers which contain information or statements that might be used to injure, harass, or damage any living person.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Elivera Mathilda Carlson was married at age sixteen to John Sheldon Doud. Doud began his business career in Chicago but moved to Boone, Iowa where he managed a meat packing plant for his father. In Boone, he met Elivera Doud. Doud amassed a small fortune and left the Boone firm while still young, moving to Colorado with his family that included four daughters. Mamie was the oldest of the girls.

Doud continued his business success in Denver, where his was one of the more prosperous families. The Doud family winter-vacationed in San Antonio every year, and it was there that Mamie met a young Lt. Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1915. In 1952, a year after the death of her husband, Mrs. Doud accompanied the Eisenhowers on the campaign trail. She was a favorite among Eisenhower’s friends and associates because of her sparkling personality and sense of humor. After his inauguration as President, Eisenhower moved his widowed mother-in-law to the White House. There, she became involved in the activities of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Republican women’s clubs. “Min” Doud died in September 1960.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The major portion of this collection consists of newspapers, newspaper clippings, and news magazines pertaining to Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1956-1957. The collection also includes a small number of photographs, family legal documents, and memorabilia collected by Elivera M. Doud.

Elivera Doud, the mother-in-law of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, collected news items pertaining to her son-in-law. Researchers will find, in this collection, numerous clippings concerning the elections of 1952 and 1956, both of Eisenhower’s Inaugurals, the health of both President and Mrs. Eisenhower, the October 1957 visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to Washington, the Eisenhowers’ purchase of the Gettysburg farm, and White House social activities.

The collection has been arranged into four series: personal correspondence and memorabilia; newspapers, arranged alphabetically; pictorial newsmagazines, arranged alphabetically; and assorted news clippings, many of which have no source and/or date.
