Phylogenetic Relationships of African Green Snakes

Samples were obtained from three volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea. The main objective was to infer phylogenetic relationships between the taxa and to trace back the colonization patterns of the group. Both insular species, Philothamnus girardi and Philothamnus thomensis, form a monophyletic unit indicating a single colonization event of one island (probably São Tomé) followed by dispersal to Annobon. Genetic divergence was found to be relatively low when compared with other Philothamnus species from the African mainland, but sufficient to consider the two taxa as distinct sister species. Here we also present evidence on the distinct phylogenetic position of Hapsidophrys sp. from the island of Príncipe, which should be considered as a distinct species, Hapsidophrys principis, a sister taxon of H. smaragdina. New Records of the Large-Eyed Green Snake, Philothamnus Macrops (Boulenger 1895), from Mozambique

Northern Mozambique is one of the most poorly known regions in south-eastern Africa and only in the last decade has it received attention through a series of multi-collaborative biodiversity surveys. These surveys have revealed numerous new species but also species hitherto unrecorded from Mozambique. One of these is the Large-eyed Green snake, Philothamnus macrops, which was previously restricted to Tanzania and south-eastern coastal Kenya. We present seven new records of P. macrops from northern and central Mozambique, the first collected as early as 1997. Additional material and genetic analysis confirmed the material to be P. macrops, which extend the species’ known range for more than 1000 km to the south. We present an annotated checklist of the herpetofauna of Kakamega Forest with comments on the biology and systematics of the taxa. Twenty-five amphibian, one turtle, 22 lizard and 36 snake species are recorded from within the forest and its immediate environment. We discuss the generalized zoogeography of the forest and distribution pattern of the taxa comment on the protection of the forest. Analysis of the reptile species composition shows Kakamega Forest to be similar to the Guinea-Congolian rainforest and is considered the easternmost remnant of this forest block. Kakamega forest has a high diversity value for Kenya and represents a diversity hotspot on a national scale. Two species, Lygodac- tylus gutturalis and Psammophis phillipsi, are recorded in Kenya for the first time. In the course of working on a taxonomic revision of the Acanthocercus atricollis complex, we discovered a popu- lation from the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys in Zambia and adjacent Malawi that is morphologically and genetically dis- tinct from all described taxa of this complex. This population is described as a new species on the basis of morphological characters, including indistinct transverse rows of enlarged scales on the body, a large black patch on the shoulders, and a different pholidosis. It is morphologically similar toA. a. gregorii and A. a. loveridgei, but seems to be more closely related to the former. Key words. Schulte) ABSTRACT Herpetofauna diversity and richness were compared in areas that varied in the degree of elephant impact on the woody vegetation ( Acacia spp.). The study was conducted at Ndarakwai Ranch in northeastern Tanzania. Elephants moving between three National Parks in Kenya and Tanzania visit this property. From August 2007 to March 2008, we erected drift fences and pitfall traps to sample herpetofaunal community and examined species richness and diversity within the damaged areas and in an exclusion plot. -

The major objective of the BFA is to undertake biological research into the biodiversity of sub-Saharan Africa, and to make the resulting information more accessible. Towards this end it provides technical, ecological and biosystematic expertise. THE ZAMBEZI SOCIETY was established in 1982. Its goals include the conservation of biological diversity and wilderness in the Zambezi Basin through the application of sustainable, scientifically sound natural resource management strategies.
