Protected Areas and Opportunities for Ecotourism in Latvia
Protected areas and opportunities for ecotourism in Latvia Valdis Pilâts Gauja National Park, Baznîcas iela 3, Sigulda, LV-2150, Latvia [email protected] Introduction In Latvia similarly to elsewhere, nature based tourism and nature protection have clo- sely evolved. For instance, Gauja River valley with sandstone outcrops became a fa- mous destination place for travellers already at the beginning of the 19th century. German travellers who compared it to the Elba in Saxony and to the “Switzerland of Saxony” called it the “Switzerland of Livland”. In 1920s the first three areas of Gauja valley obtained the status of protected areas, and in 1930s a National Park of 375 ha was created there. During the first period of independence in the first half of 20th century Latvia had a powerful tourism industry. Income from tourism was almost twice the income from our main export product - bacon. Already in the 1930’s tourism was regar- ded as an essential component of regional development, which succeeded in stimula- ting economic development, maintaining the traditional rural landscape and also play- ing a role in public education about history and nature. Unfortunately, during the mid 1900’s Latvia was once again embroiled in war, and incorporated in the Soviet Union. As a result it was isolated behind the “iron curtain” and therefore still is a “blank spot “ on today’s European and World tourist maps. Nowadays Latvia similarly to other Eastern European States in post-communist transition period is looking for new ways to strengthen national economy. Tourism is one of the areas with greatest potential for development. -

The family forms a well-defined taxonomic group that can be easily recognized on the basis of a combination of anatomical features that include a characteristic body shape, eleven-segmented filiform (thread-like) antennae and five- segmented tarsi on all pairs of legs. Ground beetles are often uniformly dark in colour, although some species, especially those that are day-active, are more brightly coloured and variously patterned. Identification keys to British species of Carabidae have been available for many years (for example; Joy; 1932; Lindroth, 1974) and the taxonomy has been extensively revised in a recently published key by Luff (2007). Additional aids to identification can be found on-line (e.g. http://markgtelfer.co.uk/beetles). Ground beetles are very active, fast running beetles and many species are predators of smaller invertebrates. Their study has benefitted from the use of pitfall traps (see below in methods) although the technique has to be used with an awareness of the bias that may be present in the data obtained (Greenslade, 1964). Osnabrück, Dez. 1991 Die ripikole Carabidenfauna der Ems zwischen Lingen und dem Dollart mit 4 Abbildungen und 3 Tabellen Thorsten Aßmann* Abstract: From 1984 to 1990 carabid beetles had been studied at 14 sampie sites of the river Ems (Lower Saxony, F. R. G.) by means of hand-collecting. 127 species were found under willow bushes, on the river banks, on the soil of marshes and in the region of the estuary. So me species are obviously stenotopic, e. g. Elaphrus aureus, living only under the willow bushes growing along the edge of the upper and middle river courses, or Bembidion maritimum, a species of the tidal- zones in estuaries. Kurzfassung : Von 1984 bis 1990 wurde die Carabidenfauna von 14 FangsteIlen an der mittleren und unteren Ems (Niedersachsen) mit Handfängen untersucht. Insgesamt konnten unter Wei- .dengebüschen, an offenen Ufern, an Sumpfstellen und im Ästuarbereich 127 Arten nachgewie- sen werden. Einige der festgestellten Arten sind offenbar stenotop, z. B. Agronomic technologies, such as undifferentiated fertilization, or fallow and set-aside breaks have a significant, although not always positive effect on soil properties. They can stimulate humus degradation in soil, the leaching of nutrients and accumulation of weed seeds, pathogens and pests in soil. Being a very useful component of biocenoses, carabid fauna is a particularly valuable group of ani- mals. They are very sensitive to changes in habitat quality and are therefore commonly used as environmental indicators. Because of their predatory polyphagous nutrition, they can be treated as an important component of natural environmental resistance. This paper discusses the species composition of Carabidae communities found on experimental plots maintained under identical, undif- ferentiated fertilization but managed differently. Relationships between selected physicochemical soil properties under long-term fertilization or soil fallowing and the composition of carabid communities were analyzed. Significantly more carabid individuals were found in the fallows compared to the experimental plots. The Shannon index indicated that treatments with a higher content of organic carbon and total nitrogen had a higher diversity. Carabidae preferred the treatments where the soil had lower pH.
