CONTENTS 3 Introduction A message of welcome from Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra, President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Dear media representative, On behalf of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), I am delighted to welcome you to the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, an event which ranks alongside the Olympic Games as the greatest prize in the sport. Between Wednesday 28 November and Sunday 16 December, the sixteen finest men’s international teams will fight it out for the chance to create hockey history and earn the right to call themselves the champions of the world. It is a privilege that very few are lucky enough to achieve, but one that will never be forgotten. The 36-match showpiece is the climax of the men’s hockey calendar and the culmination of several years of intense preparation. The event is certain to thrill the thousands of hockey fans that will flood into the refurbished Kalinga Stadium on a daily basis, all desperate to witness the world’s finest teams and athletes showing the very best that this amazing sport has to offer. Just as it did at the Hero Hockey Men’s Champions Trophy 2014 and the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final 2017, I firmly believe that this competition will be a terrific celebration of the sport, showcasing the ‘Big, Bold, Packed and Loud’ ideals that are the cornerstones of the FIH Hockey Revolution. Just as it did at Hero Hockey Men’s Champions Trophy 2014 and the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final 2017, the city of Bhubaneswar will do everything it can to ensure that the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 will be one of the most memorable in the history of the sport. This is the third time that a Hockey Men’s World Cup competition has taken place in India. Pakistan claimed their third of four World Cup titles at the 1982 competition in Mumbai, with the Kookaburras of Australia winning the 2010 event in New Delhi. Following the successful defence of their title four years ago in The Hague, Australia have the chance to create history by winning a third successive Hockey Men’s World Cup title and a fourth in total, moving level with current title record holders Pakistan. Fifteen other nations will all arrive in Bhubaneswar carrying the same ambition, ensuring that the team currently sitting at the top of the FIH Hero World Rankings will be given the sternest of tests. The Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 would not be possible without the remarkable efforts of Hockey India, who have done everything in their power to create the most fulfilling experience possible for the teams, fans and officials. On behalf of everyone at FIH, I offer you my sincere thanks. I would like to wish all of the athletes and officials a competitive, healthy and fun tournament and I hope all of the fans thoroughly enjoy both the hockey at the Kalinga Stadium and also their time in Bhubaneswar and the wonderful, historic state of Odisha. May the memories last forever. Yours in hockey, Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra FIH President CONTENTS 4 About the FIH Men’s World Cup Held every four years, the FIH Men’s World Cup brings together the world’s greatest teams and players for the toughest, most skilful and entertaining international hockey imaginable. This showpiece tournament combines extraordinary talent levels with unrivalled prestige to serve as the climax of the world hockey calendar. The Hockey World Cup provides a unique chance to achieve sporting immortality. Every nation, team and player has the chance to attain true legendary status, with a place in hockey’s history books being reserved for the competition winners. Offering contrasting styles and skills, the players step onto the biggest stage with the simplest of equations: win your matches or go home empty handed. Global superstars compete for national pride, personal greatness and ultimate glory. The number of teams that compete in the FIH Men’s World Cup has changed at various points in history. This year’s edition contains 16 nations, matching that of the 2002 competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 1971 competition in Barcelona (ESP) featured ten nations while the 1978 event in Buenos Aires (ARG) was a 14-nation tournament. All other World Cup competitions have been 12 nation events. CONTENTS 5 About the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 The Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 takes place at the re-vamped, 15,000 capacity Kalinga Stadium between Wednesday 28 November and Sunday 16 December 2018. Fifteen nations achieved qualification for the event to join hosts India in the race for the title. The home favourites were joined by teams who qualified thanks to their performances either at the last year’s Hockey World League Semi-Finals competitions in London and Johannesburg or by being crowned as continental champions. Carved out of gold and silver, it exhibits a hockey stick and ball atop of a large, embellished globe. The designer was Basheer Moojid, with workmanship being carried out in Pakistan by members of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps of the Pakistan Army. On 27 March 1971, the World Cup trophy was formally presented to FIH President Rene Frank at the then FIH headquarters in Brussels by Mr H. E. Masood, the Pakistani Ambassador to Belgium. The trophy has been presented to the winning team at every World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1971. CONTENTS 7 About Bhubaneswar Overview of the city from the ‘Bhubaneswar Smart City’ website: Known as the “Temple City”, Bhubaneswar has a unique position by virtue of the ability to seamlessly integrate its rich cultural heritage with a strong regional economic base. Founded during the Kalinga empire over 3,000 years ago, Bhubaneswar today boasts of a cluster of magnificent temples, constituting a complete record of Odisha temple architecture from its early beginnings to its culmination. The modern city of Bhubaneswar, designed by German architect Otto Konigsberger in 1946, was established to shape the city in serving as an administrative centre for the state. Today, the city is an emerging hub for education, health and information technology. Bhubaneswar also plays an important role as a regional gateway to the Golden Tourist Triangle of Puri, Konark, and Chilika Lake. To read more, click here.
