The deal covers 3 editions of the World Championships (2019, 2021 and 2023), the World Indoor Championships (2018, 2020 and 2022) and more than a dozen other competitions in the World Athletics Series. The EBU will team up with ESPN Media Distribution to represent the media rights to the IAAF World Series events across Europe and Africa, bringing a unique, combined ability to maximize the profile of athletics and increase access to the sport’s top global competitions to hundreds of millions of fans across the two continents. The European Athletics Team Championships, the European Cross Country Championships and the U18, U20 & U23 European Athletics Championships taking place until 2019 are part of this agreement together with the European Athletics Indoor Championships which will take place in Glasgow in March 2019. But the highlight of this 4 year agreement will of course be the European Athletics Championships that will be staged in Berlin in 2018 and form part of the newly created European Championships multi-sports event. This major new event, taking place every four years, aggregates the existing senior continental championships of Athletics (European Athletics), Aquatics (LEN), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (UEG), Rowing (FISA), Triathlon (ETU), with a new Golf Team Championships (ET & LET) – all unified under a common brand. Glasgow and Berlin will co-host the inaugural European Championships in August 2018, bringing together the existing championships of seven of Europe’s leading sports into one coordinated, exciting multi-sport event. The event will gather the elite of European athletes in athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, rowing, triathlon and golf in two locations. Berlin will stage the athletics while all other events will be staged in Glasgow. More than 4000 athletes will compete in Berlin and Glasgow in this landmark European sporting event which reflects the rich variety and enthusiasm for sport across the continent. The 2018 European Championships will be staged over an eleven-day period during the summer of 2018 and every four years thereafter.
