The deal covers 3 editions of the World Championships (2019, 2021 and 2023), the World Indoor Championships (2018, 2020 and 2022) and more than a dozen other competitions in the World Athletics Series. The EBU will team up with ESPN Media Distribution to represent the media rights to the IAAF World Series events across Europe and Africa, bringing a unique, combined ability to maximize the profile of athletics and increase access to the sport’s top global competitions to hundreds of millions of fans across the two continents. The European Athletics Team Championships, the European Cross Country Championships and the U18, U20 & U23 European Athletics Championships taking place until 2019 are part of this agreement together with the European Athletics Indoor Championships which will take place in Glasgow in March 2019. But the highlight of this 4 year agreement will of course be the European Athletics Championships that will be staged in Berlin in 2018 and form part of the newly created European Championships multi-sports event. This major new event, taking place every four years, aggregates the existing senior continental championships of Athletics (European Athletics), Aquatics (LEN), Cycling (UEC), Gymnastics (UEG), Rowing (FISA), Triathlon (ETU), with a new Golf Team Championships (ET & LET) – all unified under a common brand. Glasgow and Berlin will co-host the inaugural European Championships in August 2018, bringing together the existing championships of seven of Europe’s leading sports into one coordinated, exciting multi-sport event. The event will gather the elite of European athletes in athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, rowing, triathlon and golf in two locations. Berlin will stage the athletics while all other events will be staged in Glasgow. More than 4000 athletes will compete in Berlin and Glasgow in this landmark European sporting event which reflects the rich variety and enthusiasm for sport across the continent. The 2018 European Championships will be staged over an eleven-day period during the summer of 2018 and every four years thereafter. Seven hundred and ten professional riders (Mean + SD: 27.9 + 4.2 years, 1.81 + 0.06 m, 68.6 + 6.33 kg) were coMpared for physical characteristics (i.e. age, height, and body Mass). The top 25% within rider specialties were selected as the saMple group based upon Pro Cycling Stats points General Classification, sprinter, tiMe-trialists, one-day racer earned during the previous season. An additional rider classification was created for those riders outside of the top 25% of all categories called DoMestique. General Classification riders in the WT were older than PC, however, there were no other differences between rider specialties. However, differences were found in anthropoMetric characteristics within the different divisions (i.e. height, body Mass, body surface area, and frontal area). Welcome to our strategic plan for The Olympics and Paralympics provide all sports with a global opportunity to 2018 – 2024. celebrate the amazing moments that inspire us all. British Swimming has the task to nurture and to support the swimmers, divers and para-swimmers responsible for those medal-winning moments. We also have a wider responsibility to work with the home nations and the whole of aquatics in the UK to ensure a healthy, growing sport. Elite success can inspire participation but only if the whole sport works together to maximise the opportunity. The purpose of this document is to provide an overarching vision for British Swimming linked to the different disciplines.     Glossary Academic Year: A year beginning on August 1 of one calendar year and ending on July 31 of the following calendar year. Administrator: A USAC Regional Coordinator or the person designated by the Local Association. Amateur Class: The amateur class comprises riders in the senior/elite age group (19-29) who are not members of UCI teams, or, in the case of women, not on domestic elite teams. Bicycle Race: Competition among persons using bicycles where awards are given on the basis of relative performance. Cannibalizing: Taking any part or component from one bicycle to repair another, or to improve the result of another. Category: An ability-based designation for riders. Riders in the same age class may race in groups based on ability category. Class: An age-based designation, such as junior, U23, Elite, or master. Club Ride: A training ride open only to members of bicycle clubs that are members of USA Cycling or a race that is open only to members of one such club and any participant who holds a USA Cycling racing license must be licensed as a member of that club. Combined Division Race: A race in which riders from both divisions compete. Criterium: A road event held on a small course entirely closed to traffic. The length of the course is between 800 m and 5 km. The minimum width throughout the course should be 7 m. Cross Country: A massed-start competition that is held on a circuit course comprising forest roads, forest or field trails, and unpaved dirt or gravel roads.

    Organizational Forms in Professional Cycling – Efficiency Issues of the UCI Pro Tour Luca Rebeggiani§ * Davide Tondani DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 345 First Version: August 2006 This Version: July 2007 ISSN: 0949–9962 ABSTRACT: This paper gives a first economic approach to pro cycling and analyses the changes induced by the newly introduced UCI Pro Tour on the racing teams’ behaviour. We develop an oligopolistic model starting from the well known Cournot framework to analyse if the actual setting of the UCI Pro Tour leads to a partially unmeant behaviour of the racing teams. In particular, we show that the blamed regional concentration of their race participation depends on a lack of incentives stemming from the licence assignation procedure. Our theo- retical results are supported by empirical data concerning the performance of the racing teams in 2005 and 2006. As a recommendation for future improvements, we derive from the model the need for a relegation system for racing teams. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Aufsatz stellt die erste ökonomische Analyse des professionellen Radsports dar. Er analysiert insbesondere die Anreizwirkungen der neuen UCI Pro Tour auf Teams und Fahrer. Ausgehend von dem bekannten Cournot-Ansatz entwickeln wir ein einfaches Oligopol-Modell, um zu untersuchen, ob die der- zeitige Pro Tour-Organisation zu einem unerwünschten Verhalten der Teilnehmer führt. Wir zeigen, dass insbe- sondere das Problem der geographischen Konzentration der Rennteilnahmen der Teams von den mangelnden Anreizen abhängt, die vom jetzigen Lizenzvergabesystem ausgehen. Unsere theoretischen Ergebnisse werden durch empirische Daten aus der Pro Tour 2005 und 2006 gestützt. Als Empfehlung für zukünftige Entwicklun- gen leiten wir aus dem Modell die Notwendigkeit einer Öffnung der Pro Tour ab, mit Auf- und Abstiegsmög- lichkeiten für Rennteams.

If no woman started earlier as an amateur champion, certainly no woman pro stayed on the top longer. Aileen Riggin never waited for opportunities to come her way. In 1924 at Paris, she became the only girl in Olympic history to win medals in both diving and swimming in the same Olympic Games (silver in 3 meter springboard and bronze in 100 meter backstroke). She turned pro in 1926, played the Hippodrome and toured with Gertrude Ederle’s Act for 6 months after her famous Channel swim. She made appearances at new pool openings and helped launch “learn to swim programs” around the world. She gave diving exhibitions, taught swimming, ledtured and wrote articles on fashion, sports, fitness and health for the New York Post and many of the leading magazines of her day. She also danced in the movie "Roman Scandals" starring Eddie Cantor and skated in Sonja Henie's film "One in a Million." She helped organize and coach Billy Rose's first Aquacade in which she also starred, at the 1937 Cleveland Exposition. She was truly a girl who did it all. When in 1996, while attending the Olympic Games in Atlanta as America’s oldest Olympic Gold medalist, she was asked if she still had any goals left in life, she said: "Yes.

Recent progress in therapy has meant that haemophiliacs are now encouraged to participate in sports, although various guidelines have recommended that they avoid activities where risks outweigh benefits. In order to evaluate the type of sports undertaken by haemophiliacs and the benefits or risks associated with each sport, we conducted a questionnaire- based study. The questionnaire was sent to 124 patients. Among the 80 patients who responded, 71 (90%) currently participated in or had previously participated in a physical activity. Among them, 56 (70%) still played a sport. Nearly all sports were cited in the answers, the most frequently played by these 56 haemophiliacs being swimming (59%), cycling (44%), walking (43%), table tennis (33%), soccer (33%) and tennis (31%). Fifty-six patients reported a benefit in doing a sport: somatic (79%), psychological (80%) or social (62%). Thirty haemophiliacs (42%) reported at least one accident or incident linked to sport.
