VENUE COWLEY COMPETITION CHALLENGE

OXFORD 36.0 42.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 02/04/1981 RESULT: AWAY WIN AGREGATE SCORE showed much impproved form against Rye House and still had a chance to level the scores in the final heat but they again left with their tails between their legs going down 36-42 in this challenge match with the current National League champions. The home hopes rose in Heat 11 when Dave Perks substituted for Handley and he, together with Derek Harrison, gave the home side a chance to get back in the match with a 5-1. With Heats 11 and 12 all square, the scores were 34-38 and Oxford needed maximum points to draw in the final heat, but Harrison had to answer to Rockets' Steve Naylor and with Colin Ackroyd gettng a puncture, the Rockets were home.

RYE HOUSE 55.0 22.0 SCUNTHORPE DATE: 05/04/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Rye House, the League Champions, got off to bad start with a 5-1 against them in Heat 1 but soon hit back with two maximum heat wins in the next two races. A total of eight 5-1's went the way of the Rockets and only Kevin Teager with 10, paid 11, from five starts prevented more, He was worth more and put up a good show. After Mark Fiora was excluded for tape-breaking in Heat 4, Peter Tarrant led Tony Featherstone and Barry Kiing, but on the first bend of the third lap King charged under Featherstone, hit him and both fell. King was exclueded. was also excluded after falling during one of the stages of the race. Tarrant was riding at his best and scored a paid maximum as did skipper Kelvin Mullarkey.

SCUNTHORPE 28.0 49.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 13/04/1981 RESULT: AWAY WIN AGREGATE SCORE Problems continued for struggling Scunthorpe Stags as they crashed to their third heavy National League defeat. The Ashby Ville promoters are fully aware that their team urgently needs more experience at the top of the order. Only Kevin Teager, and a late contribution from new skipper Nicky Allott prevented from being totally eclipsed by last year's champions. Rye House provided winners in the first 11 heats as they cruised to a comfortable victory with a paid maximum by Andy Fines.

Nevertheless, the Fen Tigers were full value for their slender success with Robert Henry and Ian Gledhill both notching double figure returns while Ray Bales would have collected a maximum but for engine trouble when leading Heat 11. The tussle for top spot was always between the Panthers and Mildenhall with Rye House's new-look side offering weak resistance. Peterborough scored solidly throughout although Mick Hines was outstanding, his only reverse being to Bales in his first in Heat 4. Peterborough debutant Dave Allen had an unhappy start, being forced to quit with a sick motor in his first ride in race three. Neverless Allen gritted his teeth, recovering admirably to claim a creditable paid 7. DATE: 19/04/1981 DIV: 2 EASTER TRIANGLE 2nd LEG WEST ROW Rapid revenge for the Panthers in the second leg of this Easter Triangle but misery for Rye House as they lost two riders in the second heat. Peter Tarrant's footrest broke coming out of the pits bend sending him across the track in front of team-mate Andy Fines who could not stop slamming into him. Both men were taken to hospital, Tarrant escaping with bruising but Fines was detained with a badlly broken leg. The meeting developed into a duel between the Panthers and Tigers with a bizarre 15th heat deciding it when Richard Greer was the only man to finish after the other three had fallen. DATE: 20/04/1981 DIV: 2 EASTER TRIANGLE 3rd LEG RYE HOUSE STADIUM It was good to see Peter Tarrant and Barry King taking their places in the Rockets line-up, but poor Andy Fines is likely to to spend three months in Bury St.Edmunds Hospital with a fractured femur, after his alarming spill with team mate Tarrant the previous afternoon. The home side put up a good fight to score 36 points, just one less than the overall winners Mildenhall, who had notched 37. Peterborough, the leaders after the second leg, were the team with the only fider to score maximum poinnts, Richard Greer who rode superbly. Mildenhall, who needed three points from the final heat, were in fact lucky. Steve Naylor led Robert Henry and Mick Bates from the gate and Kevin Bowen made an attempt to get on terms with them, but when on the second bend of the third lap looking set to pass Bates, he locked-up badly, hitting the fence and nearly finishing on the centre green. The result finished as they started and the Fen Tigers got their three points and overall victory. On another wet, miserable evening - it rained throughout - the Kestrels continually missed the start but valiantly fought through from the back. In only two races did they fail to score; Heat 7 when Sage, comfortably in the lead, lost power on the final lap and Heat 9 in which Barnwell fell. Etheridge, a fine duel to defeat Mullarkey in Heat 6, was leading in Heats 10 and 13 but electrical problems coat valuable points. Of the visitors, looked a well balanced side and shared second place with Weymouth, for whom Wigg was superb. Mullarkey battled gamely for Rye House, but former Kestrel Naylor experienced a night to forget with three falls. DATE: 07/05/1981 DIV: 2 4 TEAM TOURNAMENT 2nd LEG RADIPOL LANE Weymouth emerged as winners of the second leg of the four team tournament at Wessex Stadium, and at the halfway stage share the lead with Crayford, who finished narrowly behind the Wildcats. The majority of the Wildcats' points came form Simon Wigg, who scored a fine maximum, with support from Martin Yeates, who recorded ten points. Weymouth did not start particularly well though, and after six heats trailed the leaders at that stage, Crayford, by five points. It was Heat 11 before the Wildcats went ahead following a win from Wigg. Crayford had a balanced quartet, with top scorer Barry Thomas only suffering one defeat, being placed behind Wigg and Robert Maxfield in Heat 11. Alan Sage, with two heat wins, helped the Kestrels to finish in second place. Rye House, trailing after the first leg, had only managed eight points at the halfway stage of this leg, fought back with heat wiins from Kelvin Mullarkey and Steve Naylor to clinch third place with 20 points. Exeter had a desperately unlucky night, with all but one of their riders suffering mechanical failures at various times, but despite heat wins from Maxfield, Martiin Hewlett and Les Sawyer, the Falcons finished fourth with 17 points. Exeter went into their home round struggling to pull back a 14 point deficit on Weymouth and Crayford, but a couple of falls for Martin Hewlett meant they were trailing on the night to their two main rivals after six heats. The final 10 races saw Exeter collect five wins and four second places to pull back 12 points on Crayford and face a keenly-fought last heat decider with Weymouth for top spot on the night. John Barker made a great effort to relegate Barry Thomas to third place, but was unable to beat Weymouth's Martin Yeates, who dropped his only point to home skipper Robert Maxfield. This was Rockets first home league defeat for 65 matches, the run going back to August 21, 1977. Glasgow were prepared to race - and many of their points were won the hard way - by ignoring the appalling conditions and fighting from the back. Steve Naylor and Kelvin Mullarkey kept the Rockets flag flying while reserves Barry King and were given additional outings following their never-say-die efforts in earlier heats. All to no avail, as he stylish and impressive Steve Lawson led by example and encouraged his team to score points consistently.

WOLVERHAMPTON 55.0 23.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 21/05/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Wolverhampton need more support but Rye House didn't help the cause in this match. A wet track and two early injuries might be put forward as an excuse but it was still a shoddy display from the champions. It wasn't until Heat 6 that Tarrant finally managed to put Rye House in the picture when he did well to pass Billy Burton, but three heats later he was so far behind he was unable to catch Bruce Cribb even when the home rider packed up at the last bend. Naylor's main aim was to roll at the gate, and with half the match gone Mullarkey's contribution had been getting Heat 7 stopped with his partner well behind. After this he did something more constructive and produced the best racing of the match with eight points from three rides. Continuity is an important point and surely it's a mistake for the next meeting to be as far away as June 7! Consoling thought is that the weather must get better.

WORKINGTON 49.0 29.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 22/05/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Disappointing Rye House were swept aside by a Workington team exuding new-found confidence. Perhaps the short-handed Rockets were still feeling the effects of the previous night's match at Wolverhampton. Whatever the reason, for the first time in years they looked like seven individuals and not one team. Comets meanwhile were all get up and go. Mark Dickinson annexed the track recorded in Heat 1 with a fine third to first, and completed a forceful 15 point maximum. Rejuvenated Terry Kelly was also unbeaten, and with plenty of help in support down the order, Workington were always in command. Steve Naylor toiled ceaselessly for the visitors, but with only reserves Phil Vance and Marvyn Cox showing any fire, his task was doomed to failure.

RYE HOUSE 37.0 41.0 WOLVERHAMPTON DATE: 24/05/1981 RESULT: AWAY WIN AGREGATE SCORE Wolverhampton consolidated their fourth position in the National League with a four point win over the Rockets. The away side took the lead in Heat 2 and were six points in front after four heats. Kelvin Mullarkey and Marvyn Cox combined well for a 5-1 in Heat 5 and Steve Naylor inflicted the only defeat on Les Rumsey in Heat 6, with Kevin Bowen taking third spot to level the scores, but Wolves pulled six ahead again after Heats 8 and 9. They can look to Neil Evitts who scored 10, paid 12, from the number seven spot as their match winner. There was some fine speedway to entertain the fans who have been deprived these past few by the weather.

PETERBOROUGH 70.0 26.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 29/05/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE An incredible 44-point lead from the first leg of this KO Cup tie should be enough to put Panthers into the next round. Before the match , team manager Brian Clark said he would be very surprised if the Rockets came within 20 points, so he was obviously delighted by this result. Double figure returns for four of their team - the Hines brothers collecting 14 points each - and the entire side producing team riding of the very best quality, won a deserving standing ovation. The City side were up 33-9 after seven heats, during which time Rye House were unlucky to suffer engine failure when in good position to collect points. Dave Allen, who has proved a valuable signing this year, picked up bonus points in four of his five riders, the only shadow coming in Heat 11 when teenager Andy Buck was excluded for unfair riding when trying to take Kevin Bowen on the last lap. Panthers mean to finish among the awards this year and after this type of performance not many people would bet against them.

The home side found themselves 18 points down after just five heats and worse still minus a rider. Kevin Bowen having crashed in Heat 3 while challenging Neil Evitts for second place. Kevin went to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone and the Rockets set about the task of stopping the rot but with the Brummies using rider replacement for Koponen and their top three riders really liking the Hoddesdon circuit, it was all to no avail.

Quite honestly, it's one all Rockets fans will want to forget. The home side hone only three out of the 16 heats and only Steve Naylor and Kelvin Mullarkey offered any real resistance to the Panthers. Indeed it was Naylor who provided the one bright spot of the afternoon for the Rockets patrons when in Heat 13 he came from third to first in spectacular fashion with some determined riding. A race that many thought would win him the man of the match award, but that honour went to Peterborough's No.1 Andy Hines.

CRAYFORD 55.0 23.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 09/06/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Crayford, who had not beaten Rye House in a league match since 1976, seized their chance against a lack-lustre side, which was but a shadow of teams of the past. Sage, in dominant mood, led the onslaught with his first full score of the season - a feat emulated by a determined Pither, whose total exactly doubled his home NL points tally to date. Hollingsbee, paid 8 confirmed his exxcellent showing of the previous week and Etheridge and Thomas, both paid 11, displayed splendid form in their contrasting styles. Mullarkey, the visitors only heat winner, fought hard and fully earned his points but apart from Tarrant received little support. Ex Kestrel Naylor retired from the meeting with a knee injury following a Heat 7 fall.

RYE HOUSE 34.0 44.0 EXETER DATE: 14/06/1981 RESULT: AWAY WIN AGREGATE SCORE Another home defeat for the Rockets but unlike the previous two this one had some excellent speedway. Unfortunately for Rye House they had a disastrous first three heats. In Heat 1 Barry King had not covered 30 yards when he tangled with Les Sawyer's back wheel and hurtled into the safety fence. In Heat 2 Garry Monk led for the first lap before pulling out with machine trouble. And in Heat 3 Steve Naylor led for two laps and then he, too, was forced to retire. But after this Naylor was in fine form winning his next four fides, three of them from the back. Kelvin Mullarkey and Barry King combined well in Heat 8 to gain the Rockets only 5-1.

Eight points down with two heats to go, Steve Naylor and Kelvin Mullarkey scored a 5-1 in Heat 12 leaving the home side requiring another 5- 1 to draw. It was Naylor this time paired with Peter Tarrant who flew from the gate and the Rockets duo led Cheetahs Dave Perks and Paul Evitts for a lap before Tarrant overslid on the final turn of the second lap allowing the Oxford riders to follow Naylor home for a shared heat. Barry King rode far better than his four points suggests but it was Evitts who swung the match Oxford's way with 10 points from the number seven slot.

Their fate was sealed in Heats 1 and 11 when Neil Collins and George Hunter twice combined for 5-1's. Apart from those two races exchanges were fairly even with Steve Naylor leading the offensive for the home side. He lost only to Neil Collins and Ivan Blacka who with Hunter paved the way for two league points. But Alderman crashed heavily in the next race and retired after another ride. Those mishaps made little difference to Port's onslaught on Rye House whoe were virtually beaten from the opening race. Gunners piled up the points with Australian Rob Ashton including three fine wins in his first-ever paid maximum. Steve Finch was another paid maximum man and Eric Monaghan, improving with every match, turned in his best performance. Rockets depended on Kelvin Mullarkey and tiny newcomer, Marvyn Cox, for most opposition to the Gunners although Tony Garrad sparkled briefly in a bright team ride with Cox for their only 5-1.

MIDDLESBROUGH 44.0 34.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 09/07/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Bore Tigers avenged their only home defeat of last season with a victory over the National League Champions as they continue their title takeover bid from Rye House. It was at Cleveland Park that the Hertfordshire club finally clinched the championship and although they never really looked like beating Tigers this time, they certainly put up a good show. Top marks must go to Bob Garrad who flew round the track for a 13-point haul including the fastest winning time this season. But apart from Garrad and Kelvin Mullarkey, Rye House couldn't match Tigers in depth scoring power. Mark Courtney scored another maximum, skipper Steve Wilcock dropped just one point - to Garrad - and Mike Spink and Martin Dixon both gave useful performances in what ended up as a comfortable victory.

EDINBURGH 50.0 27.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 10/07/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Another lacklustre affair, woefully short on thrills with, as expected, only Bob Garrad offering the kind of resistance that threated to lift this match out of the exceedingly ordinary. He won his first two races and was runner up in his next three to collect half his side;s total pointage. His colleagues were as ineffective as that. Garrad managed to deprive Trownson of this maximum and the only bright light on the horizon for a Monarchs side obliged to win in a great canter was Collins, back nearly at his best after solving his engine trouble. Some mild excitement after the final race. Mullarkey came off and blamed Blacka. Team boss Hugh Saunders agreed and supported him to the extent of an attempted physical skirmish with Monarchs' American on the track. The display of immaturity was quickly quelled.

STOKE 48.0 30.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 11/07/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Steve Naylor's sixth heat crash, which ruled him out of the remainder of the match, effectively ended Rye House's challenge and Stoke went on to a comfortable win. The foundation of their success came in an early burst that had Rockets reeling. Four 5-1 wins and a 4-2 in the first six heats put the Potters 18 points in front and although Kelvin Mullarkey and Bob Garrad rode hard they were always fighting a losing battle without the concussion- hit Naylor.

OXFORD 43.0 35.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 16/07/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Without the services of Dave Perks, the Cheetahs pulled off an exciting win over Rye House and in doing so completed a League double over the Rockets. Things looked bad for the home side when the Rockets took a 5-1 in the opening heat but two heats later the Cheetahs were in front and although the visitors managed to level the scores again in Heat 6 Oxford came back wot a 5-1 in the following heat and went on to win an entertaining encounter. Derek Harrison was in magnificent form to register a maximum, Colin Ackroyd scored a fighting 10 paid 11 and these two received excellent support from reserves Mick Fletcher (eight) and John Grahame (five). Steve Naylor headed the Rockets score chart with 11, dropping his only point to Harrison in Heat 4. His main support came from former Cheetah Kevin Bown who scored a very well earned nine points.

RYE HOUSE 42.0 35.0 BOSTON DATE: 26/07/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Rye House gained only their third home league victory of the season in this defeat of Boston in a truly entertaining match. And old-style 2vultures" race, eventually awarded to Johns after various mishaps to Rook and Monk, opened the proceedings, to decide the final place in the Rockets side, following the surprise decision of King to retire. Rye gained the lead as early as Heat 3 and kept it throughout. Garrad, Naylor and Mullarkey all rode supremely well but the most telling contribution came form Bowen with his best home performance of the year. Hollingworth and slick-gating Gagen, who each took five rides, rode well fot the visitors and Mallett deserved far more than the points he scored. Regegling was most unfortunate to blow his engine, when well clear in the lead first time out and had to use borrowed machinery thereafter. Youngsters Johns, strained right knee ligaments after hitting the safety fence, and Masters, concussion, both retired from the meeting.

CANTERBURY 45.0 33.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 01/08/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE A solid team display enabled Canterbury to gain a comfortable victory over Rye House, their first since 1978. Mike Ferreira again led the Crusaders score chart with a effortless maximum and would have been joined by Denzil Kent had he not suffered carburettor troble whilst leading in the final race. The top two received excellent support from reserve Darryl Simpson, his best scroe to date, and Kevin Brice, on his return from injury, who twice defeated Rockets' Bob Garrad. Kevin Bowen was surprise top scorer for the visitors with paid 11 while inconsistent Garrad and skipper Mullarkey were the only other riders to unduly troble the home side.

RYE HOUSE 41.0 36.0 STOKE DATE: 02/08/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Rye House continued their recent improved form with a deserved win over a Stoke team that made the home side work hard throughout the 13 heats. Rockets had a much more solid look about them and apart from Tony Garard they all made vital contributions with new boy Peter Johns picking up a useful four points tally. Stoke, with Pete Smith making his last appearance before returning to Leicester, had strength in depth as well which made for an absorbing match.

RYE HOUSE 37.0 41.0 MIDDLESBROUGH DATE: 09/08/1981 RESULT: AWAY WIN AGREGATE SCORE With track conditions treacherous, Middlesbrough secured two vital National League points with slick gating and good team riding technique. Despite losing the services of Bernie Collier, who sustained a broken leg, in a Heat 4 crash with Martin Dixon, the Tigers maintained a solid challenge throughout which could not be matched by the Rockets. Even an determined effort by Kelvin Mullarkey in Heat 10 to split the pairing of Mike Spink and Mark Courtney was eventually thwarted by the Rye House captain being completely filled-in after three laps and forced to drop back to last place. The match was closely fought with never more than four points seperating the teams and all 14 riders must be commended for riding under such difficult conditions.

MILTON KEYNES 40.0 38.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 11/08/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE The Knights finally ended their incredible run of 10 successive home defeats - and what a night to put on a winning show! A brilliant summer's evening attracted by far the largest crowd of the season, swelled by hundreds of complimentary ticket holders and specially-invited guests from the second-half sponsors Connells. And speedway first-timers must have been impressed both by the racing and the unique atmosphere on the packed terraces. For once the Knights never allowed themselves to get into arrears and when young Mick Blaynee turned on a piece of world-class brilliance to squeeze past Kelvin Mullarkey in the crucial 11th heat, he put the Knights well on course for their belated win. His courageous ride kept them siz points ahead and this time they hung on to their advantage, despite conceding a 5-1 in the last race.

In the early stage both teams were evenly matched but Heat 5 saw the turning point and thereafter Rye House never looked back. For Crayford, Alan Sage and Barry Thomas maintained a solid challenge and provided some thrilling racing with their consistenly determined efforts. It was with such determination by Sage in Heat 10 to retain the lead from Kelvin Mullarkey that resulted in Mullarkey falling on the top turn. But much to the surprise of the crowd, Sage was not penalised by referee Ken Hill.

GLASGOW 46.0 32.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 21/08/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Although the Rockets lacked a number of big names of previous visits, their younger element raised local eyebrows with some spirited efforts with both Kevin Bowen and Marvyn Cox making a tremendous impression with the Blantyre supporters. However, once again the Tigers' strength-in-depth was sufficient to see the home side through to a comfortable victory with reserves Colin Caffrey and Harry Maclean playing as big a part as anybody in the win. Bowen defeated Steve Lawson in Heat 1 and reeled off another three wins to enter Heat 11 seeking a five ride maximum but he gated sluggishly and was unable to pull back even a point. Marvyn Cox was forceful, erractic and often in quite the wrong place at the right time yet displayed flashes of style and ability that must surely carry this young man to the sport's highest honours in years to come.

BERWICK 55.0 23.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 22/08/1981 RESULT: RESULT VOID AGREGATE SCORE Whatever the expectations Rye House had of this match, reality must have fallen far short of their hopes. Having achieved a reasonable result against Glasgow on the same circuit the previous evening, the Rockets should have held their hosts to a close score but instead they were never in the hunt. Only Kelvin Mullarkey and to a lesser extent Bobby Garrad could match the Bandits for whom Robert Grant and Mike Caroline were unbeaten. Kevin Bowen, who had scored lustily 24 hours earlier, fell while leading Heat 1 and took no further effective part in the proceedings. But generally, Rockets needed more than a few points from Kevin to win this one, they needed a miracle.

After just securing the last qualifying position in the semi-finals Garrad's amin opposition came from Kelvin Mullarkey. Int the final, Mullarkey gated from the outside but at the start of lap two Garrad seized his opportunity and never looked back. Les Rumsey, the early favourite, was unfortunate to drop a primary chain in his last qualifying ride and then seized his engine in the semi-finals. BOSTON 47.0 31.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 30/08/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Reigning champions Rye House, facing their second local derby in a few hours were shown no compassion by a Boston outfit whose professionalism and uncompromising approach again paid rich dividends. The meeting was always controlled by Boston but Rye House played their full part in an interesting encounter which produced some excellent Speedway on another superbly prepared track. Bob Garrad was the Rockets rider who caused the most problems and ended the maximum hopes of home skipper David Gagen. Steve Naylor was involved in the best race of the night when he had a four-lap tussle with Steve Lomas in Heat 11 which was also stopped the Boston rider's maximum hopes. A good performance by Boston which maintains their 100 per cent record but that will be surely tested on Sunday when Edinburgh are the visitors at 3pm.

RYE HOUSE 48.0 30.0 CANTERBURY DATE: 13/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Rye House stormed to a convincing 18-point victory over Canterbury who were forced to use the rider replacement rule for injured Mike Ferreira. Kevin Bowen secured his first maximum in the Rockets colours in fine style including thrilling races in Heats 8 and 10 when, having missed the gate, he gained victory by superb efforts on the first bend. Team-mates Kelvin Mullarkey, Steve Naylor and Bob Garrad were also in line for maximums but were prevented by Canterbury's Denzil Kent who virtually put up a one-man crusade for the visitors.

WEYMOUTH 54.0 24.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 15/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE 1978Although the away wins gained by Middlesbrough during the weekend had toppled Weymouth from the top of the league table, the Wildcats made sure of another two National League points with a very easy victory against last year's champions, Rye House. This was Weymouth's first victory at Wessex Stadium against the Rockets since 1978, and barring a complete disaster in their last home match, against Workington, the Wildcats are set to complete the season unbeaten at home. As in previous weeks, Weymouth set about to crush the opposition in the opening races and with six 5-1 advantages from the first nine heats, Rye House were well and truly beaten. Indeed, the Rockets were somewhat fortunate that they were only 39-15 down at that stage. Only a fall from Steve Schofield in Heat 2, an engine failure in Heat 8, and a fall from Brian Woodward in Heat 9, stopped the Wildcats from gaining maximum points from the first nine races. The only interset remaining in the final four heats was whether the home side's heat leaders would finish unbeaten again. As it hapened, Martin Yeates and Simon Wigg, both finished with maximums, while Les Rumsey ended with a paid maximum, leaving the Rockets without a heat winner.

RYE HOUSE 45.0 33.0 ELLESMERE PORT DATE: 20/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Rye House secured a 12 point victory over Ellesmere Port the meeting was a much closer affair than the score suggests The Gunners twice pulled back to a mere two-point deficit and it wasn't until Heat 12 when the Rockets clinched the match. The track, which was under water the previous day, had been superbly prepared and this prompted some excellent challenges from the back. Rockets' Bob Garrad took a full maximum in fine style including a thrilling last to first dash in Heat 3 and Marvyn Cox also fought hard for his six (paid 7) score. Kelvin Mullarkey put his name in the record books by making his 215th league appearance for Rye House. Next Sunday Rye House stage a double header with Newcastle and Workington and start time is advanced to 3pm.

NEWCASTLE 52.0 26.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 21/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE This was awful! A most lop-sided contest between the Lada Diamonds and 1980 National League winners Rye House produced shabby entertainment for the Tyneside crowd. Numbers looked to be slightly down - and those absent were proved to be good judges as the Diamonds, professional and workmanlike, decimated the Rockets. It is just as well Rye House have the services of Bob Garrad again - he proved the only mild irritation to the home side on the night. In the later heats, Newcastle eased off and introduced No.8 Kym Mauger for a couple of rider-replacement rides.

PETERBOROUGH 42.0 36.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 25/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE The Rockets amazingly provided no less than nine of the race winners but still finished up pointless. Rye House may have had the individual stars in Kelvin Mullarkey (14 points from five rides) and Bob Garrad (paid 13 from five) but Peterborough finally squeezed home thanks to a solid all-round team effort. The architect of Panthers' seventh victory from their last eight League matches was sleek starting reserve Andy Fisher who Impressively won his first three races, his only defeat being to Mullarkey, a Heat 8 tactical substitute when the Alwalton hearo was also drafted in for the out-of- touch Ian Barney. Peterborough comfortably held an eight point lead for much of the encounter but had a late shock when the Rockets recorded a penultimate heat 5-1. With the score at 38-34 going into the vital last race the home camp protested that Rye House reserve Peter Johns had not fulfilled the minimum two rides. However, this was over-ruled by the referee and when the action eventually got under way Mick Hines clinched both points for Panthers and in doing so dented Mullarkey's maximum aspirations.

RYE HOUSE 45.0 33.0 NEWCASTLE DATE: 27/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Superb gating by Newcastle in the early stages of this thrilling match secured the Diamonds an eight-point advantage after four races but then Rye House made a miraculous recovery to win by an excellent 12-point margin. Most of the Rockets' points were won from the back and there was no better example than in Heat 9 when Bobby Garrad and Marvyn Cox, both having missed the gate, stormed through in the first two laps to reverse what would have been a 5-1 to the visitors. The closing stages saw Newcastle score only seven points from the last five races and the early season title-chasers looked only a shadow of their former selves.

RYE HOUSE 63.0 15.0 WORKINGTON DATE: 27/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE A sadly weak Workington side were no match for Rye House who were still revelling in their first half victory in this double-header. The Comets utilised the rider replacement rule for Ian Hindle and were also without Terry Kelly and Guy Wilson. David Price was recalled as a last minute substitute but he failed to arrive. For Rye House, Marvyn Cox recorded his first-ever maximum and, apart from Kevin Bowen who fell in Heat 8, none of the Rockets dropped a point to the opposition.

EXETER 57.0 21.0 RYE HOUSE DATE: 28/09/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE There was a 45-minute delat before the second-half of this double header with a match against Rye House could get under way while a lighting failure was repaired. The result was never in doubt once the match began with Exeter collecting eight 5-1 successes, two 4-2 heat wins and the remaining three races were shared. Skipper Kelvin Mullarkey and Bobby Garrad were the only visiting heat winners as Exeter gained the win that gave them a 100 per cent home record. John Williams had a paid maximum for Exeter and teenage reserve Keith Millard was unbeaten in his three reserve races, but was headed home by Mullarkey when he took an extra ride in the final heat in the hope of collecting his first paid maximum.

DATE: 13/10/1981 DIV: 2 KENT/HERTS TROPHY 2nd LEG CRAYFORD STADIUM In a tuat, closely-contested match Rye House, with a last heat 5-1 over the Crayford pairing, managed a deserved, albeit marrow, win. It was fitting that the match was clinched for the Rockets by Naylor and Cox because of the tremendous display, thoughout, of team-riding by the ex-Kestrel with his young patner. Garrad, with a splendid maximum, and Mullarkey, defeated only in his last ride, also featured in the Rockets' victory. Rocket's Bob Garrad suffered an engine failure while leading in Heat 9 and was forced to borrow machinery for the crucial Heat 13. Garrad's partner Steve Naylor gated well but rode wide on the first turn and was excluded for causing Mildenhall's Robert Henry to fall. Henry, who had previously dropped only one point to Garrad, gated first in the re-run and secured the league points for the Tigers. It was unfortunate that either side should lose and a draw would have been a fair result.

RYE HOUSE 51.0 27.0 MILTON KEYNES DATE: 25/10/1981 RESULT: HOME WIN AGREGATE SCORE Milton Keynes were never in a position to put up a strong challenge against Rye House and as the meeting progressed it was evident that Knights' Andy Hibbs was going to be the only prolific scorer for the visitors. Hibbs prevented Kelvin Mullarkey and Kevin Bowen from scoring maximums and eventually his points tally was more than the rest of the team put together. Without the injured Craig Featherby, the Knights utilised Mark Astley at number thrree and borrowed Dale Rook at number eight. The Rockets recorded an evenly balanced scorechart and rounded off the season with thoughts that, barring injuries, they could once again be in contention for the National League title in the not too distant future.
