  • The Speedway Researcher
The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 16 No.2 September 2013 Edition No. 62 Dick Seers Aussie Test Team Star Tony Webb sets out a brief look at an Aussie who is probably looked upon as a lesser light but still was a test match star. Dick Seers, Allan Quinn, Don Lawson Arthur Payne and Keith Ryan are the only survivors of the original Australian Test teams that were popular until the first series ended in 1953. Dick is now resident in the central coastal town of Port Macquarie. Dick now in his 86th year, was born 14 August 1926 in Sydney, has fond memories on his years as a professional speedway rider. Dick travelled to England in 1948 where he joined the Fleetwood Flyers with Frank Malouf. Dick failed to make an impression at the northern track scoring a total of 8 points and was placed on a free transfer. He wintered in England where he trained on Oliver Hart’s training track. In 1949 he was invited to Glasgow in 1949 scoring 4 points in early season matches, then transferred to Halifax where he surprised everyone by finishing the 1949 season as their third highest point scorer with 367 points. In 1950 he was transferred to First Division Bradford Tudors, netting 113 points. He was selected as reserve for Australia in the test match at West Ham on June 6, but failed to get a ride in the World Championship rounds he scored 13 points which placed him 41st in the qualifiers but an injury curtailed his season.

  • Mike Western
Dream Team : Mike Western I first started watching speedway from my bedroom window as we lived right beside the County Ground in Exeter. I started actually paying to watch in the early 60's when Len Silver was virtually unbeatable at home and characters like Howdy Byford, Chris Julian and Chris Blewett rode for the Falcons. After university I lived in Sweden for a while and supported Getingarna who rode in Stockholm at the track (now much improved) where newcomers Hammarby are pulling in crowds of 4000 plus. On returning to the UK I became involved in promoting, first at Hackney, then Ipswich and finally King's Lynn. I still go to Foxhall every Thursday but fear for the sport if the so called Elite League is allowed to continue in its present form. Loram Moore Tony Rickardsson I first saw Tony in an Under-21 final at Lvov where he finished third. There was just something special about him and the next year I persuaded him to turn professional and ride for Ipswich. In the modern post-war era Tony was the best rider I have seen - ultra professional, totally focussed on winning, a colourful personality and most importantly, a never say die racer. Ronnie Moore When I was a kid, the big treat of the year was a trip to the World Final at Wembley, the only occasion which provided an opportunity to see the 'big boys' from the National League and abroad. Ronnie Moore was pure class - an easy 'armchair' style and an elegance about his riding which in my opinion only Leigh Adams has amongst todays riders.

BELLE VUE BELLE VUE µ$&(6¶ 20 BELLE VUE 1982 Season Review Belle Vue comes first in the alphabetical list of tracks in this yearbook. It is also the first British speedway team that comes to mind for many of the great British public. And in 1982 the Belle Vue Aces came first in the British League too, 10 years afterthey last won this particular trophy and seven years since this famous Manchester club won any national ƐŝůǀĞƌǁĂƌĞ͘^ƵĐŚĂƌĞƐƵůƚĚŝĚŶ͛ƚůŽŽŬ on the cards early on as the Aces had a modest League Cup campaign, losing at home to Cradley Heath and managing just one win in their six away meetings on their way to third place in the Northern Section. From the start of May things improved. On the opening day of the month Belle Vue trounced Swindon 56-21. That loss prompted something of a wobble though as they immediately went down at Wimbledon and lost at Leicester and at home to Ipswich a couple of weeks later. They also lost heavily at Sheffield before July had finished, albeit after home and away victories over Eastbourne. At the end of July Belle Vue were in a three-way tie at the top of the league but, significantly, they had ůŽƐƚĨŝǀĞƚŝŵĞƐƚŽƌĂĚůĞLJ,ĞĂƚŚ͛ƐŽne defeat. WORLD LONGTRACK FINALS 1971 – 1996 Tracy Holmes Pre 1971 Before we look at the first World Longtrack Final in 1971, we must take a peek at its prototype, the European Final. The first of these was held in 1957 and won by the Norwegian legend Leif "Basse" Hveem. The term 'legend' is often thrown about like confetti but in this case, it is well earned ! The next 3 Finals were all won by West Germany's Josef Hofmeister. No-one was ever able to achieve the 'Triple Crown' in the World Finals, but 2 riders did it in its forerunner. Hofmeister was joined by another West German, Manfred Poschenrieder winning in '66, '67 and '68. The closest anyone got in the World Final was England's Simon Wigg who won the Finals of '93 and '94, only to be beaten in the Gold Medal run-off in '95 by his England team-mate, Kelvin Tatum! Swedish riders excelled in the Euro Finals, 1954 World Speedway Final bronze medalist, Olle Nygren took the bronze in the '59 Final. Ove Fundin, reigning World Speedway Champion at the time, was 2nd in the '61 Final behind Timo Laine of Finland. Just over a week later, Fundin won his 3rd World Speedway Final. Bertil Strid was Sweden's first Euro Champion, winning the Finals of '62 and '63. The Swedes were interupted in '64 by Denmark's Kurt W. Petersen. On the 12th of September 1965, Swedish star Bjorn Knutson won the Euro Final. A week later, he won the World Speedway Final as well.
