INTRODUCTION Welcome to this FREE speedway e-book, the first of its kind as far as we're aware. This book collates the memories and impressions of riders that we've received for our 'Dream Team' feature on the Speedway Plus website. This book runs from Adams to Zetterstrom giving the supporters' opinions on many riders from the past and present. The comments were made between 2000 and 2007, therefore if you find a comment suggesting that a 27 year old Premier League second string is a stick-on to be World Champion, it's likely to be one of the older contributions. This book differs from any other as it's written entirely by a cross section of supporters, from virtually every track in the land and with varying experiences of speedway. If a rider isn't listed, it's because nobody has chosen them as one of their seven favourite all time riders. Similarly if a little known rider has been included, it's because they've made sufficient impression on someone to be nominated. A definite case of democracy in action. Clearly, given that the comments were all written in this present century, the majority of the riders are from the British League era (1965 onwards). However, there are a number of vintage favourites in there also. If you want your own personal favourites to feature in any subsequent editions then fill in our 'Dream Team' submission form on the website. We hope you enjoy the book. Leigh rode for me at King's Lynn and he was an absolute pleasure to work with - always immaculately prepared machinery and a genuine team man. I would love to see him win the World Championship soon.     The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 12 No.3 December 2009 Edition No.47 Constructive Debate Those of you who follow the Old Time Speedway chat room web site will know an article we published some time ago has been the cause of some, let us say, passionate, debate and questions about the accuracy of some of our articles. In the light of this we would like to say that we set up to achieve the sub heading above but never set up to make any claims about the accuracy of the material we publish simply because we cannot check every item we receive and publish. We accept, in good faith, that the article represents the honest belief of the contributor. Equally, that should anyone consider there are factual inaccuracies in any article that they let us know their differing opinion and we will publish it provided it is not going to land us in court i.e. isn‟t offensive to or is a personal attack on anyone. We would like to move on from this episode positively and, as a magazine which is nearing the half century edition, would like to see it continue to hit the 100, have everyone pulling together in pursuit of a common chequered flag.     THE HISTORY OF SPEEDWAY IN EDINBURGH : Part 3 The Provincial League Years 1964: CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE WRECKED BY INJURIES 1964 was the year the Provincial League went "black", following demands for reorganisation of the sport by the National League bosses which the PL felt were unreasonable. They decided to go their own way and there was a complete split for a year. From a spectator's viewpoint it made little difference other than the loss of the usual World Championship round (Pl men no longer being eligible). It also meant the calling-up of some new and untried referees, though they seemed no better or worse than the previous lot. Ex-Tiger Tommy Miller was amongst the new group. The team contained no surprises, and as usual they took time to find their feet. Even though Clive Featherby didn't arrive Sheffield won the opening Northern League match in spite of a Doug Templeton maximum. The first three away matches in the competition were all lost, and this included the first match against the re-born Glasgow Tigers for a decade. The Tigers had a top-heavy team and were thrashed 56-21 at Old Meadowbank, full maximums were scored by George Hunter, Wayne Briggs and Doug Templeton. Finally the away win bogey (they hadn't won since 1962) was cracked with two-in-row, a challenge at Middlesbrough, and a 47-30 triumph at Sunderland, and in both these matches Doug Templeton and George Hunter scored full maximums. They were matching each other point- for-point and giving a great lead, but after backing from Wayne Briggs and Willie Templeton the tail was as poor as ever.
