CHAN Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong S.A.R., China Abstract: Icons, which take the form of images, artifacts, landmarks, or fictional figures, represent mounds of meaning stuck in the collective unconsciousness of different communities. Icons are shortcuts to values, identity or feelings that their users collectively share and treasure. Through the concrete identification and analysis of icons of post-war Hong Kong, this paper attempts to highlight not only Hong Kong people’s changing collective needs and mental or material hunger, but also their continuous search for identity. Introduction: Telling Hong Kong’s Story through Icons It seems easy to tell the story of post-war Hong Kong. If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia. -

This paper reviews the status of Cantonese in Hong Kong under this policy with respect to the levels of government, education and curriculum, considers the consequences of neglecting Cantonese in the school curriculum, and discusses the importance of large-scale surveys for language policymaking. It always results in raising the status of the regional vernacular, but the lan- guage of the ex-colonist still maintains a very strong influence on certain domains. Taking Singapore as an example, English became the dominant language in the work- place and families, and the local dialects were suppressed. It led to the degrading of both English and Chinese proficiency levels according to scholars’ evaluation (Goh 2009a, b). -

Digital Culture in Hong Kong Canadian Communities: Literary Analysis of Yi Shu’s Fiction Jessica Tsui-yan Li York University Hong Kong Canadian Communities have particularly expanded between the 1980s 191 and the mid-1990s, in part owing to a new wave of Hong Kong immigration to Canada in recent years. This large-scale migration is mainly due to Hong Kong’s dynamic geopolitical and economic relationships with Mainland China and Canada as a result of its transformation from a British colony (1842-1997) to a postcolonial city. Hong Kong Canadian migration and communities offer important contribu- tions to the sociohistorical, political, and economic heterogeneity of multicultural Canadian communities. As a trading centre on Mainland China’s south coast, Hong Kong was an important stop on the travels of Chinese migrants to Canada from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. With the hardworking ethics of its population and its role as a window to the rest of the world for Mainland China, Hong Kong gradually developed from a fishing port into an industrial city and then became an international financial centre, making the most of an economic uplift that began in the 1970s. With the advance of global capitalism, Hong Kong has progressively established its distinctive judicial, financial, medical, educational, transportation, and social welfare systems, and gradually produced a local culture and a sense of identity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in shaping contemporary diasporic communities, such as those of Hong Kong Canadians. According to Leopoldina Fortunati, Raul Pertierra, and Jane Vincent, “The appropriation of the new media by migrants has changed the way in which today people migrate, move, negotiate their personal and national identity and make strategies to deal with new cultures. -

Chinese Culture and Coaching in Hong Kong
Chinese culture and coaching in Hong Kong Pansy Lam, Hong Kong University, School of Professional & Continuing Education (SPACE), Hong Kong. Contact Email: [email protected] Abstract Coaching is a Western concept introduced into the Hong Kong Chinese society almost two decades ago. Confucianism, the underlying Chinese cultural principles, and Hofstede’s five dimensions of culture (1980, 1997, 2001) are examined to determine the cultural characteristics of Hong Kong. This mixed methods study analyzes data collected via a focus group and a small scale survey to investigate how Hong Kong Chinese coaches and coachees feel about the compatibility of coaching with their Chinese cultural heritage. The findings will provide insights into the training of coaches in Hong Kong and lay the ground work for further research in multicultural coaching. Key words: Coaching; Confucianism; Hofstede dimensions of culture; Hong Kong Chinese; Introduction Coaching has largely been driven by Western thinking and business practice. It is only recently that coaching has started to gain a strong presence in Asia (Abbott, 2010). In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Coaching Community (HKICC) was registered in 2002 by a group of coaches who were mainly English speaking people, educated in the West. The International Coach Federation (ICF), formed in 1995, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching has become more popular in Hong Kong with the development of the Hong Kong International Coaching Community, which was originally the Hong Kong Coaching Community (registered as a society and accepting founding members in 2002). -

This study aims to investigate how social capital embedded in the family, school, and community influences the cultural identities across three groups of Chinese youths in the educational system: local students; cross-border students (born in Hong Kong, living in the neighbor city of mainland China but attending schools in Hong Kong on daily commute); and new immigrant students (born in mainland China but living in Hong Kong for less than seven years). Using data from a cross-sectional survey with 2180 fourth- to ninth-grade students in Hong Kong, the logistic regression results suggest that family and community social capital play significant roles in shaping the cultural identity of youths. I think everybody knows this festival very well. I love Chinese New Year so much, because I can get a lot of red pocket money. And also there is a lot of delicious food for Chinese New Year, for example, Chinese New Year cakes, melon seeds and Chinese turnip cakes. Some people will go to (Lam Tsuen’s wishing trees) to make a wish for the new year. A visit to the (Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees) is a great way to take part in a local Chinese tradition. These two famous banyan trees are favourite with local villagers who come to burn joss sticks and incense papers hoping their wishes will come true. During Chinese New Year, many Hong Kong people go to this spot to make their Chinese New Year wishes by tying wish making papers onto the wooden racks beside the trees. Taking part in this tradition and your wish may come true. Do you know where Lam Tsuen is? Let me tell you, Lam Tsuen is in Tai Po. You can take the MTR to Tai Wo and then take a taxi to go there. I suggest you all pay a visit for Lam Tsuen, I think it is a good activity for Chinese New Year. On the second day of Chinese New Year, Hong Kong has a fireworks display at Victoria Harbour. I hope everybody has a very happy Year of the Ox.
