    NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation 2009ARR0003-000365 March 16, 2009 THREE MORE FIRST NATIONS SIGN TREATY-RELATED AGREEMENT DEROCHE – As another demonstration of British Columbia’s commitment to concluding treaties, the In-SHUCK-ch Nation signed a bilateral understanding with the Province that formally concludes treaty negotiations between the two parties, Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Michael de Jong announced today. “We are experiencing unprecedented momentum with treaty negotiations in British Columbia and we are celebrating today’s milestone with the formal acknowledgment it deserves,” said de Jong. “In-SHUCK-ch has demonstrated great leadership and vision to reach this understanding with us and it will bring tremendous benefits to their communities as we move closer to settling another important final agreement in British Columbia.” The signing of an understanding is an interim step prior to a treaty agreement between the Province, In-SHUCK-ch Nation and Canada. The proposed Final Agreement includes approximately 14,976 hectares of provincial Crown land and 1,284 hectares of existing reserve lands. Capital transfer funds will also assist In-SHUCK-ch with business capacity and economic opportunities. “My communities will benefit from finally getting connected to the hydro grid by the end of 2010,” said Gerard Peters, Chief Negotiator for the In-SHUCK-ch Nation. “We will also benefit from improvements to the forest service roads that my communities, and the residents of Lillooet Lake, currently rely on and this will increase the economic development in our area,” added Chief Patrick Williams of Skatin First Nations. The In-SHUCK-ch Nation represents three First Nations communities – Douglas First Nation, Samahquam Nation and Skatin First Nations – located along the Lillooet River Valley between Harrison Lake and Mount Currie in southwestern British Columbia.

    Recognizing the Diversity of BC's First Nations Languages First Peoples' Cultural Council, January 2018 S. Gessner, T. Herbert & A. Parker Exceptional Diversity British Columbia is unique within Canada when it comes to Indigenous language diversity. There are 7 distinct language families, completely unrelated to each other. Within these families there are 34 different First Nations languages and at least 93 different dialects (varieties) of those languages. Besides these 34 living languages, at least three languages which were spoken in British Columbia are now sleeping. In addition to First Nations languages, Michif, the language of the Métis people, is spoken here, and Chinuk Wawa (aka Chinook Jargon), a creole language, was once actively spoken. In the context of Canada, BC's languages make up more than 50% of the approximately 61 languages indigenous to this country. Why are regions such as BC’s northwest coast so linguistically diverse? In discussing the genesis of the linguistic diversity of the Pacific Northwest, Beck (2000, p. 154) observes that “Nichols (1992, p. 13) refers to such areas as ‘residual zones’—regions containing a number of genetically diverse languages that have coexisted for long periods of time in a state of cultural and political equilibrium in which no one group has attained ascendancy over another. Residual zones, she points out, are a "hallmark" of the Pacific Rim (Nichols 1992, p. 22) and most typically arise in mountainous areas and other geographical regions in which numerically smaller individual languages can remain sheltered and relatively autonomous (1992, p. 233-34). These zones are typified by the internal diversity of the languages that exist within them.” Threat to Diversity While celebrating this rich diversity that is integral to Canada’s unique cultural heritage, we must recognize that this diversity is under threat.

V8W 1R8 October 2010 Cover photograph by Brian Gladstone Soo TSA Public Discussion Paper Introduction The British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range regularly reviews the timber supplya for all timber supply areasb (TSA) and tree farm licencesc (TFL) in the province. This review for the Soo TSA, examines the impacts of current forest management practices on the timber supply, economy, environment and social conditions of the local area and the province. Based on this review, the chief forester will determine a new allowable annual cutd (AAC) for the Soo TSA. According to Section 8 of the Forest Act the chief forester must regularly review and set new AACs for all 37 TSAs and 34 TFLs in the Province of British Columbia. The objectives of the timber supply review are to: • examine relevant forest management practices, environmental and social factors, and input from First Nations, forest licensees and the public; • set a new AAC; and • identify information to be improved for future timber supply reviews. This public discussion paper provides a summary of the results of the timber supply analysis for the timber supply review of the Soo TSA. Details about the information used in the analysis are provided in a September 2008 data package. The timber supply analysis should be viewed as a “work in progress”. Prior to the chief forester’s AAC determination for the TSA, further analysis may need to be completed and existing analysis reassessed as a result of inputs received during this review process.
