MEDIA STATEMENT DATE: 15 NOVEMBER 2018 FORREST REVEALS RAPID FUTURE FOR SPORT IN ASIA A revolutionary sports and entertainment concept is set to sweep the Asia Pacific region with Andrew Forrest’s new-look elite-rugby competition receiving a critical tick of approval. The World Rugby Council conditionally sanctioned a bold new sporting brand, Global Rapid Rugby, overnight. The 2019 season would kick-off in late February with teams competing for an AUD$1 million first prize. Once official approval is granted by all participating playing unions, a new era in sports and entertainment will begin. Rapid Rugby details that can now be unveiled include… • Eight teams across the Asia Pacific • 14 rounds, 56 games plus four finals • Up to 20 of the world’s best players as competition marquees • A fast-paced, 70-minute total game time • New and revised laws to increase ball in play time towards 55% • A dynamic, viewer-friendly 90-minute total broadcast product • Exciting stadium entertainment at every game, everywhere Global Rapid Rugby founder Andrew Forrest AO described the World Rugby Council decision as an historic moment for the sport, all sports fans and the Asia Pacific. “It has not been a simple road,” he said while commending World Rugby for supporting his vision in a Social Media video announcing the proposed look and feel of Rapid Rugby in 2019. “I’d like to thank everyone that has been bold and brave enough to support this brand-new competition. Like all sports, rugby needs to evolve. The modern sports public is spoilt for choice and demands easily digestible, fast-paced action.” The potential for rugby to flourish in Asia and for the sport to benefit local communities is central to Rapid Rugby’s mission, according to Forrest.

18 Established 1961 Sports Wednesday, May 13, 2020 Photo of the day Italian golfers swing again as lockdown eases FASANO: One of Italy’s best known golf clubs has reopened after two months of lockdown with a handful of players returning to the links under new social distancing rules. San Domenico Golf in Apulia in the heel of Italy’s boot and neighbouring luxury resort Borgo Egnazia reopened at the weekend but face an uncertain future. “We closed at the beginning of March,” said Aldo Melpignano, owner of Borgo Egnazia, where Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel held their wedding in 2012. “But this week the Apulia Region allowed some individual sports to resume and golf is one of them. We jumped at the chance and decided to reopen immedi- ately at the weekend.” The resort and golf club will initially rely on Italian guests but hopes that foreigners will soon also return. “We’re resigned to this reali- ty at least for the summer,” he said. Notable changes in the rules on the greens are that players must keep at least three metres apart when hitting the ball and not remove the flag from the hole. European Tour professional Francesco Laporta has returned to training in the open after two months of hit- ting balls into a net in his garden. Laporta hopes the season will resume again at the end of July. “There will certainly be new rules to respect,” he said, including the lack of spectators. “I think the caddie will be able to keep on following us, working close to us,” he ROME: Red Bull Sailing led by double olympic gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher compete in Italy.

  • Statement Regarding World Rugby's Ongoing Support of the Pacific Islands
Statement regarding World Rugby’s ongoing support of the Pacific Islands World Rugby recognises the special contribution that the Pacific Islands make to the global game, and the joy they bring to fans around the world with their passion, commitment and skill. Rugby puts the Pacific Island nations on the world stage in a way that no other activities do. We also recognise the unique geographical, societal, economic and rugby challenges faced by the Pacific Islands, which is why we are committed to significant financial, administrative and operational support of the unions, their players and activities. We also recognise the importance of the issues raised within the documentary, issues that have either been addressed or are in the process of being addressed in partnership with key stakeholders, in order to strengthen the long-term viability of the unions on and off the field of play. While World Rugby is the biggest investor in the Pacific Islands and plays a unique role in a sporting context in the support of the three nations, it is important to note that the International Federation’s support reaches way beyond the GBP£21 million direct funding it will invest in national team and development activities across the four-year cycle to Rugby World Cup (an increase of 50 per cent). World Rugby works tirelessly to provide a suitable environment that promotes the development of players for the national team, provides unions with a greater voice in decision-making processes and access to high level competitions (examples can be found below). On the subject of eligibility, World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont has expressed commitment to exploring the possibility of a ‘homecoming’ rule for Pacific Island players, something that can also be achieved via the Olympic qualification pathway.
