Ibn Al-Haytham's Lemmas for Solving Ibn al-Haytham's Lemmas for Solving "Alhazen's Problem" A. I. SABRA Communicated by M. CLAGETT "Alhazen's problem", * or "problema Alhaseni (or Alhazeni)", is the name given by seventeenth-century mathematicians to a problem which they encoun- tered in the Optics of AL-HASAN IBN AL-HAYTHAM. The Optics, composed in the first half of the eleventh century, had been translated into Latin in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, 1 and an edition of it by FRIEDRICr~ RISNER had been published at Basel in 1572. 2 CHRISTIAAN t-ItJYCENS formulated the problem as • A shorter version of this paper was read at the annual meeting of the History of Science Society which took place in New York in December 1979. The attached translation of IBN AL-HAYTHAM'Slemmas is part of a project involving an edition and English translation of the Arabic text of IaN AL-HAYTHAM'S Optics (Kitab al-Man~z.ir). Of the twenty odd manuscripts that have been located in European libraries, the eafliest are from the thirteenth century, and one of these (the Edinburgh Royal Observatory MS CR3.3 -~ MS 9-11-3(20)) is dated 1269 (see D. C. LINDBERG, A Catalogue of Medieval and Renaissance Optical Manuscripts, Toronto: The Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, 1975, pp. 17-19). The earliest mention of the Latin version of the Optics in the West occurs in a work by JORDANUS DE NEMORE who flourished in the period between 1220 and 1230 (see MARSHALL CLAGETT, Archimedes in the Middle Ages. 'Opticae thesaurus' is deafly the collective title of the whole volume and should not be cited as the title of ALHAZEN'S 'seven hooks,' 300 A.I. SABRA that of finding the point of reflection on the surface of a spherical mirror, convex or concave, given the two points related to one another as eye and visible object, a He had found IBN AL-HAYTHAM'Streatment of the problem "too long and weari- some" (longa admodum ac tediosa), 4 and, armed with the tools of modern algebra and analytic geometry, he set out to produce a solution of his own--a task which he finally fulfilled to his own satisfaction in 1672, having proposed an earlier solu- tion in 1669. "Long and wearisome" though IBN AL-HAYTHAM'Streatment may have been, it certainly represented one of the high achievements of Arabic geometry, and its importance for the history of mathematics in Europe down to the seventeenth century is easily recognizable. HUVGENS' brief and elegant solution was itself based on the same idea which IBN AL-HAYTrtAM had used six hundred years earlier--the intersection of a circle and a hyperbola. This paper is concerned with "Alhazen's problem" as it appears in IBN AL- HAYTHAM'S Optics. The problem of finding the reflection-point occurs in this book as part of a long series of investigations of specular images which occupy the whole of Book V, and these investigations in turn presuppose a theory of optical reflection which is expounded in Book IV. Much of the character of IBN as is often done. The seven books were together known in the Middle Ages as Perspectiva or De aspectibus, the titles sometimes shown in the extant manuscripts. EU6~N~, whose native tongue was Greek, had access to the Greek text of EUCLID'S Optica which, like the works of PTOLEMY and IBN AL-HAYT~IAM,was called in Arabic Kit~b al-Man-dzir. On EUGENE see C. H. In 1669 HUV6ENS expressed the problem in optical terms: "Dato speculo sphaerico convexo aut cavo, datisque puncto visus et puncto rei visae, invenire in superficie speculi punctum reflexionis" (ibid., p. 265). In 1672 the formulation became purely mathematical: "Dato circulo cujus centrum A radius AD, et punctis duobus B, C. Invenio punctum H in circumferentia circuli dati, unde ductae liB, HC faciant ad circumferentiam angulos aequales" (ibid., p. 328; also vol. VII, pp. 187-9). See note 4 below. 4 Ibid., p. 330. ISAACBARROW was another mathematician in the seventeenth century who was annoyed by the excessive length of IBN AL-HAYTHAM'Ssolution. In Lecture IX of his Lectiones XVIII cantabrigiae in scholis publicis habitae (first published at London in 1669), he described IBN AL-HAYa~AAM'Sdemonstrations as "horribly prolix" (see p. 74). Neither HuYG~NS nor BARROW was, however, concerned to explain the character (ob- jectionable or otherwise) of IBN AL-HAYa~AM'Smethod of solution. Their approach was that of mathematicians, not of historians of mathematics. See the relevant remarks by SAB~TAI UNCURtS in his edition and English translation of Witelonis Perspectivae liber Primus (Studia Copernicana XV), Wroctaw, etc.: Ossolineum (The Polish Academy of Sciences Press), 1977, pp. 209-12. "Alhazen's Problem" 30! AL-HAYTHAM'S treatment of reflection-points can only be appreciated if under- stood with reference to this wider context. It should also be mentioned that IBN AL-HAYTHAM'S researches extended to cylindrical and conical as well as spherical mirrors. IBN AL-HAYTHAMwas therefore aiming to solve a wider and more com- plex set of problems than "Alhazen's problem" in HUYGENS' limited sense. Here, however, I am only concerned to give an account of that aspect of IBN AL-HAY- THAM'S treatment which can be directly related to HUYGENS' formulation, and to present a full translation of the six lemmas which IBN AL-HAYTHAM proposed for solving the problem in all its generality. The clarifications which I hope to make are intended to be part of a more comprehensive study. The limited problem with which we shall be concerned is, therefore, that of finding the point of reflection on the surface of a spherical mirror. Let us begin with IBN AL-HAYTHAM'S solution as applied to the case of a convex mirror. A and B (in Fig. 1.1) are, respectively, the given locations of the eye and the visible point. G is the centre of the mirror with a radius GD, given in magnitude. The plane of the circle is that containing lines AG, BG; and it is proposed to find on the circumference of the circle a point D, such that AD and DB will make equal angles with the tangent at D. IBN AL-HAYTHAM takes at random a line MN (Fig. 1.2), which he divides in a point F, such that MF BG FN GA " From point O at the middle of MN he draws the perpendicular OC, on which he takes a point C, such that 1 ~ OCN = -~- AGB. Then, and this is the crucial step, through F, he draws line QFS, cutting NC in Q and the extension of CO in S, so that SQ BG QN GD " Now IBN AL-HAYTHAM shows, before coming to this proposition, that tw~ such lines can be drawn through F, producing two unequal angles at N. He takes the case of the larger of the two angles and further assumes that angle SNQ is, obtuse. ([ have reversed the order of presentation to spare the reader some of the. suspense, but I shall return to this crucial construction.) Having made this assumption, the construction of Figure 1.1 proceeds as follows: Draw GD at an angle BGD equal to SQN: this gives the position of D which is now to be shown to be the point of reflection of the light from B to A. IBN AL-HAYTHAM continues as follows: He produces GD to E and draws line ZDT tangent to the circle at D. He then draws DK at an angle GDK equal to angle QNF (Fig. 1.1), and BR perpendicular to the extension of DK. (He can do the latter because angle GKD is acute.) However, the ancient Greek mathematicians also used another construction method, the neusis, which was a straightedge with two marked points. We show in this article how a neusis construction can be implemented using dynamic geometry software, and give some examples of its use. 1 Introduction Standard Euclidean geometry, as codified by Euclid, permits of two constructions: drawing a straight line between two given points, and constructing a circle with center at one given point, and passing through another. It can be shown that the set of points constructible by these methods form the quadratic closure of the rationals: that is, the set of all points obtainable by any finite sequence of arithmetic operations and the taking of square roots. With the rise of Galois theory, and of field theory generally in the 19th century, it is now known that irreducible cubic equations cannot be solved by these Euclidean methods: so that the \doubling of the cube", and the \trisection of the angle" problems would need further constructions. Doubling the cube requires us to be able to solve the equation x3 − 2 = 0 and trisecting the angle, if it were possible, would enable us to trisect 60◦ (which is con- structible), to obtain 20◦.

It traces the development of major branches of mathematics throughout history, specifically algebra, geometry, number theory, and methods of proofs, how that development was influenced by the needs of various cultures, and how the mathematics in turn influenced culture. The course extends the numbers and counting, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability strands from previous courses, and includes a new history strand.

Frederick Rickey, United States Military Academy Lawrence Shirley, Towson University Introduction. There are many excellent reasons to study the history of mathematics. It helps students develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics they have already studied by seeing how it was developed over time and in various places. It encourages creative and flexible thinking by allowing students to see historical evidence that there are different and perfectly valid ways to view concepts and to carry out computations. Ideally, a History of Mathematics course should be a part of every mathematics major program. A course taught at the sophomore-level allows mathematics students to see the great wealth of mathematics that lies before them and encourages them to continue studying the subject. A one- or two-semester course taught at the senior level can dig deeper into the history of mathematics, incorporating many ideas from the 19th and 20th centuries that could only be approached with difficulty by less prepared students. Such a senior-level course might be a capstone experience taught in a seminar format. It would be wonderful for students, especially those planning to become middle school or high school mathematics teachers, to have the opportunity to take advantage of both options. We also encourage History of Mathematics courses taught to entering students interested in mathematics, perhaps as First Year or Honors Seminars; to general education students at any level; and to junior and senior mathematics majors and minors. Ideally, mathematics history would be incorporated seamlessly into all courses in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum in addition to being addressed in a few courses of the type we have listed.

Introduction Much attention has been paid by historians of Arabic mathematics to the proofs by geometry of the rules for solving quadratic equations. The earliest Arabic books on algebra give geometric proofs, and many later algebraists introduced innovations and variations on them. The most cited authors in this story are al-Khwārizmī, Ibn Turk, Abū Kāmil, Thābit ibn Qurra, al-Karajī, al- Samawʾal, al-Khayyām, and Sharaf al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī.2 What we lack in the literature are discussions, or even an acknowledgement, of the shift in some authors beginning in the eleventh century to give these rules some kind of foundation in arithmetic. Al-Karajī is the earliest known algebraist to move away from geometric proof, and later we see arithmetical arguments justifying the rules for solving equations in Ibn al-Yāsamīn, Ibn al-Bannāʾ, Ibn al-Hāʾim, and al-Fārisī. In this article I review the arithmetical proofs of these five authors. There were certainly other algebraists who took a numerical approach to proving the rules of algebra, and hopefully this article will motivate others to add to the discussion. To remind readers, the powers of the unknown in Arabic algebra were given individual names. The first degree unknown, akin to our �, was called a shayʾ (thing) or jidhr (root), the second degree unknown (like our �") was called a māl (sum of money),3 and the third degree unknown (like our �#) was named a kaʿb (cube).

    THE HISTORY OF ARABIC SCIENCES: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY Mohamed ABATTOUY Fez University Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin A first version of this bibliography was presented to the Group Frühe Neuzeit (Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin) in April 1996. I revised and expanded it during a stay of research in MPIWG during the summer 1996 and in Fez (november 1996). During the Workshop Experience and Knowledge Structures in Arabic and Latin Sciences, held in the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin on December 16-17, 1996, a limited number of copies of the present Bibliography was already distributed. Finally, I express my gratitude to Paul Weinig (Berlin) for valuable advice and for proofreading. PREFACE The principal sources for the history of Arabic and Islamic sciences are of course original works written mainly in Arabic between the VIIIth and the XVIth centuries, for the most part. A great part of this scientific material is still in original manuscripts, but many texts had been edited since the XIXth century, and in many cases translated to European languages. In the case of sciences as astronomy and mechanics, instruments and mechanical devices still extant and preserved in museums throughout the world bring important informations. A total of several thousands of mathematical, astronomical, physical, alchemical, biologico-medical manuscripts survived. They are written mainly in Arabic, but some are in Persian and Turkish. The main libraries in which they are preserved are those in the Arabic World: Cairo, Damascus, Tunis, Algiers, Rabat ... as well as in private collections. Beside this material in the Arabic countries, the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, the Biblioteca del Escorial near Madrid, the British Museum and the Bodleian Library in England, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Süleymaniye and Topkapi Libraries in Istanbul, the National Libraries in Iran, India, Pakistan..

Rethinking Geometrical Exactness Marco Panza1 IHPST (CNRS, University of Paris 1, ENS Paris) Abstract A crucial concern of early-modern geometry was that of fixing appropriate norms for de- ciding whether some objects, procedures, or arguments should or should not be allowed in it. According to Bos, this is the exactness concern. I argue that Descartes' way to respond to this concern was to suggest an appropriate conservative extension of Euclid's plane geometry (EPG). In section 1, I outline the exactness concern as, I think, it appeared to Descartes. In section 2, I account for Descartes' views on exactness and for his attitude towards the most common sorts of constructions in classical geometry. I also explain in which sense his geometry can be conceived as a conservative extension of EPG. I con- clude by briefly discussing some structural similarities and differences between Descartes' geometry and EPG.
