Wine Pinnacle Awards 2019 press release Resorts World Sentosa Celebrates Great Wines of the World with Inaugural ‘Wine Pinnacle Awards 2019’ To be held in October, a three-day celebration of excellence and diversity in the world of wines at the first-ever nomination-based awards and festival will feature wines selected by over 80 wine professionals SINGAPORE, 19 June 2019 – Resorts World Sentosa has assembled an illustrious five-member Wine Committee helmed by Ms Jeannie Cho Lee, the first Asian Master of Wine, who leads an over 80- strong jury of wine professionals from around the globe – comprising Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, wine auctioneers, and sommeliers from top fine-dining restaurants – for the launch of its inaugural ‘Wine Pinnacle Awards 2019’. Presented by Genting Singapore and to be held at its flagship lifestyle destination, Resorts World Sentosa from 10 to 12 October this year, the highly anticipated three-day celebration of excellence and diversity in the world of wines is the first-ever nomination-based recognition of wines without restrictions on origin or need for submissions or entry fees. Votes by the independent expert jury will be gathered by way of a secured online nomination ballot, with the nomination list to be revealed in August. Taking place alongside the gala dinner and awards ceremony on 10 October is The GREAT Wine & Dine Festival where gourmands can enjoy three days of good food paired with many of the nominated wines. Together, Wine Pinnacle Awards and The GREAT Wine & Dine Festival are poised to be the first major wine event in Southeast Asia where distinguished wine experts will join hands with celebrity chefs to elevate the appreciation of wine to a whole new epicurean level, setting Resorts World Sentosa apart as a top dining destination for food and wine connoisseurs. Page 1 of 8 The Wine Pinnacle Awards Committee The Wine Pinnacle Awards Committee comprises five internationally reputable wine experts namely Ms Jeannie Cho Lee of Hong Kong, Mr Kenichi Ohashi of Japan, Mr Doug Frost of the United States, Mr Oz Clarke of the United Kingdom and Mr Andreas Larsson of Sweden. They are responsible for establishing the nomination structure and formation of a credible jury. The committee will also oversee the nomination process to ensure there is sole focus on quality and merit. Please refer to Annex A for biographies and quotes of committee members. Ms Jeannie Cho Lee said, “Given that the Wine Pinnacle Awards is based on expert nominations instead of paid submissions, it opens up for an entire world of wines to be recognised and awarded. For the first time, we are honouring deserving wine producers and wines that may otherwise fall under the radar of wine competitions. We have designed the award categories such that we can celebrate wines across a broad spectrum, from young wines to mature wines that are ready to drink, discovering hidden treasures that are currently under-appreciated or under-valued. This will be a truly groundbreaking awards platform that will hopefully generate lots interest and excitement among the wine community.” The Nomination Process The Wine Pinnacle Awards is a first-of-its-kind recognition initiative for the wine industry that is based on a nomination model. Without the need for submissions of wines or entry fees, it brings together an unprecedented panel involving over 80 top wine professionals from around the world who will nominate wines of their choice without restrictions on origin. The Award Categories The celebration of excellence and diversity is evident from the 27 award categories that include recognition towards mature wines that are ready to drink such as Best Bordeaux Wine from 1996 and Best Burgundy White from 2008, ‘Best Organic/Natural Wine of the Year’, ‘Best Recent Releases’, ‘Best Chinese Red’, ‘Best Young Winemaker of the Year’, and ‘Hidden Treasures’. Please refer to Annex B for full list of categories. “Of all the categories, I am most looking forward to see what will be nominated for the category of Best Organic/Natural Wine of the Year. I strongly believe that organic wines will become commonplace and perhaps even mainstream so it would be interesting to see how wine producers exercised their craftsmanship while managing the challenges and opportunities presented by the world phenomenon of climate change and sustainability,” said Mr Oz Clarke, Wine Pinnacle Awards Committee Member and wine expert. The crown jewel of them all is the ‘Grand Jury Award’ that will be determined by the Wine Pinnacle Awards Committee. The winner of this coveted title will be chosen from amongst all the winners from the other categories. The Wine Pinnacle Awards Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony on 10 October 2019 Preceding the three-day celebration is the Wine Pinnacle Awards gala dinner and awards ceremony on 10 October 2019, which will be held at the Resorts World Ballroom. It will be a celebration of excellence and diversity in the world of wines paired with extraordinary food. It also removes the limitation of awarding wines that are among a paid pool of submissions. Instead, the Wine Pinnacle Awards focuses on pure quality and merit, encompassing the world of wines without commercial limitations." – Jeannie Cho Lee, MW Brief Profile: Jeannie Cho Lee is the first Asian Master of Wine and an award-winning author, television host, editor, wine critic, judge and educator. "Rarely have many of the world’s most highly-regarded wines been entered in international wine competitions. How wonderful it is that in the Wine Pinnacle Awards, all wines including those very highly-regarded bottles will have the chance to be voted by close to a hundred leading wine professionals from around the world based on their experiences, and the awarded wines will be announced to wine lovers around the world.

  • Silvaner Subtle, Shapely & Stylish
Silvaner subtle, shapely & stylish A RENDEZVOUS WITH TRADITION 3 THE STYLE OF SILVANER WINES Silvaner is one of the most important white grape varieties in German viticul- tural history. From its debut in Germany in the second half of the 17th century through the mid-1960s, it was the most widely planted grape variety in Germany. At its peak, it was cultivated in ca. half of Germany’s total vineyard area. It replaced inferior grape varieties, including Elbling and Gutedel, until it was supplanted by the more prolific grape Müller-Thurgau. But Silvaner has made its comeback. The world’s largest acreage of Silvaner lies in Germany, with ca. 5,000 ha (12,500 acres), where it is the fifth most important grape today, equal to 5% of the country’s vineyard area. Of this 2,371 ha (ca. 5,859 acres) are planted in Rhein hessen and 1,406 ha (3,474 acres) in Franken, the world's largest Silvaner regions. The grape is particularly adept at reflecting its terroir: mineral tones clearly underscore fruity, spicy or herbal / vegetal aromas remi- niscent of honeydew melon, apricot, apple, orange or lemon peel; coriander; celery and new-mown hay or grass; and sometimes, toasty notes – as depicted in the glass to the right. Silvaner 4 A RENDEZVOUS WITH TRADITION Leading producers plant Silvaner in top sites that are protected from wind and cold, yet have good circulation and sufficient moisture. If left unchecked, it is a prolific bearer of grapes suitable for uncomplicated everyday wines. With quality-oriented vineyard maintenance, including stringent pruning, Silvaner grapes can produce very good and excellent Prädikat wines.

  • Festivals to Attend Wine Dinners to Enjoy
CHIHOU SEPTEMBER 17, 2019 WINE: A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2019 We’ve remarked before that we’re endowed with an embarassment of riches when it comes to drinking in Singapore, and perhaps the best example of that comes from wine. We’ve managed to round up almost a dozen things to do with wines, big or small, this September and October, a good month before the holiday season proper even begins. Strap in, we’ll get you through it. FESTIVALS TO ATTEND Going all out: Wine Pinnacle Awards 2019 and the GREAT Wine & Dine Festival When it comes to wine awards, it’s often a little hazy as to how the final entries are selected, and how the winner is decided. It’s also important to ask how relevant it is to you. Well, perhaps those questions can be answered by Resorts World Sentosa. They’ve gotten together a five-member Wine Committee of luminaries, helmed by Jeannie Cho Lee, the first Asian Master of Wine, and an independent jury of over 80 wine professionals to launch its inaugural Wine Pinnacle Awards 2019. Held from 10 to 12 October this year, the awards will not restrict wines under consideration by origin, submissions or entry fees. The gala dinner and awards ceremony will be held on 10th October, in partnership with two Michelin-starred La Grand’Vigne . You might ask how is this relevant to me? Well, if pomp and pageantry isn’t your thing, however, The GREAT Wine & Dine Festival will be on during the awards season, and many of the nominated wines (some of the best ones in the world, we remind you), will be paired with food from Resorts World’s many celebrity chef-helmed restaurants.
