ISSN 1459-4331; 264 (PDF)) ISBN 978-951-39-6332-3 (nid.) ISBN 978-951-39-6333-0 (PDF) Diss. This dissertation is a study of Pentti Saarikoski’s political lyrics of the 1960s. The hy- pothesis of the study is that the means of poetry are utilised in the ex-pression of political views in Saarikoski’s poetry. In the study, I focus on analysing the speaker of the poems, imagery, and intertextuality. I also analyse the avant-gardist features of Saarikoski’s poetry. During the 1960s, Saarikoski published seven collections. His work Mitä tapahtuu todella? (What Is Really Going On?, 1962) is a combination of avant-gardist renovations of Finnish lyrics and the confessional poetry of a com- munist. In the collection Ääneen (Aloud, 1966), the speaker proclaims the message of socialism and tries to convince his addressees of its superiority. The writing style of Saarikoski’s collection Katselen Stalinin pään yli ulos (I Look Out Over Stalin’s Head, 1969) reminds us partially of prose. The change in the speaker’s relationship with politics can be seen in the collection: for example, he is pessimistic about the political effectiveness of poetry. Although Saarikoski used various writing methods in his poetry, the study assumes that it is possible to create a general picture of his political poetics. I utilise Marxist literary criticism in the study in order to deepen my analy- sis. In Saarikoski’s poetry, the speaker expresses his political ideology, for example, by stating, “I became a communist” and “I’m a communist”. He also advocates the proletariat and encourages the workers to take action to improve their social status. When it comes to the imagery of Saarikoski’s poems, the writer uses both traditional tropes and concrete images in his texts. The former often express the political views of the speaker, while the latter say something essential about social circumstances. The intertextual allusions in Saarikoski’s poetry also have political dimensions. For example, the poems frequently demonstrate their subtexts, such as the aphorisms of Heraclitus or The Bible, to be political works. The study concludes that it can be sug- gested that Saarikoski’s political poetry represents ‘the canonical revolution’. This means that it is based both on continuing the literary tradition and the revolutionary renewal of poetry.     11 EZRA POUND AND THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY H. K. Riikonen The last two decades before the First World War mark an interesting period in the history of the classical tradition. The writers of this generation had still received an education based on a solid learning of the classical languages and of classical literature. This is attested by their constant allusions to and quotations from Greek and Roman poetry. Classical allusions, however, were not mere testimonies to the mod - ernists’ education; indeed, such an education enabled them to interpret the culture of antiquity in fresh new ways and to use various aspects of the classical heritage for their artistic pur - poses. Due to new archaeological discoveries, they had access to material which was unknown to previous genera - tions and which changed the general conception of Greek and Roman culture, which had been based on Winckelmannian ideals. Arthur Evans’s excavations on Crete yielded new information for the use of the writers who were interested for instance in the story of Daedalus, the constructor of the labyrinth and of the wings used to escape the island. Evans, a former war correspondent, also efficiently communicated his discoveries, sending for instance reports and telegrams to The Times (Cottrell 87-88, 113-130). Riikonen was the most notable author to write about Daedalus, Icarus and the labyrinth; these in fact took on a new topicality through Evans’s archaeological work (Fortune 123-134; Hayman 33-54). Another important factor was the discovery of papyri in Hellenistic Egypt, bringing to light masses of new documents on the everyday life of the Greeks, but also fragments of ancient Greek poetry, especially poems by Sappho.

Recent developments in comparative, translation and reception studies produced many works dealing with this issue. While much versatile research on recep- tion has been done in the case of the most popular world literatures (in English, German or French), little is known about foreign reception – especially bilateral – of literatures of smaller nations and less popular languages. This dissertation looks more closely at mutual literary exchange and reception in two small countries – Finland and Poland. The disserta- tion does so by looking at the bibliography of literary translations in question and their reviews in the target country. The research covers a period of Polish-Finnish literary translations from their begin- nings (the second half of the 19th century) till the year 2006, during which both countries went through significant transformations of their social, political and literary life.

    8 EZRA POUND AS A PERSONA FOR MODERN FINNISH POETRY Janna Kantola The present paper on Pound’s Finnish reception has two parts. It begins with an introduction to Finnish poetry and its relation to European currents in Pound’s time. After this, I will consider Ezra Pound’s significance in Finland during a specific period in Finnish poetry. In this context, I will take a closer look at Pound’s translators in Finland as well as at those who otherwise had a say in introducing him. I will then, finally, discuss two Poundian poems written by a major 20th- century Finnish poet, Pentti Saarikoski. The point of depar - ture for this presentation is the idea that the translator, a man or a woman “made of words,” always, in giving life to a for - eign text in his or her own language, wears a mask, or, as in the case of translating Pound, a double mask, lending a voice not only to Pound but also to those masks and voices that Pound himself had invented. In Finland, modernism appeared several times, at first in Swedish, especially in works by Edith Södergran (1892- 1923), shortly after World War I. She did – as did Finnish Swedes Gunnar Björling (1887-1960) and Elmer Diktonius (1896-1961) – the same kind of pioneering work on poetry Quaderni di Palazzo Serra 15 (2008): 135-143. 136 Janna Kantola written in Swedish, that Pound and Eliot did on poetry writ - ten in English, and at the same time. JOHDANTO: Herakleitos siirtymähahmona Tutkielmani aiheena on Herakleitoksen asema länsimaisen filosofian ja metafysiikan historiassa. Tarkoitukseni ei kuitenkaan ole esittää kokonaistulkintaa Herakleitoksen ajattelusta, vaan tarkastella Herakleitosta eräänlaisena siirtymähahmona. Katson, että länsimaisessa ajattelussa tapahtui suuri muutos filosofian synnyn ja siihen liittyvän metafyysisen ajattelun kehityksen myötä. Mutta kyseessä ei ollut mikään äkillinen käänne, jossa vanha ajattelu olisi kuollut saman tien uuden syntyessä, vaan pikemminkin monimutkainen siirtymä, jonka aikana uusi ajattelu syntyi vanhasta ja vanha sisältyi vielä uuteen. Tämän siirtymän keskipisteeseen sijoitan Herakleitoksen. Viittaan filosofialla ja metafysiikalla lähinnä Platonin ja Aristoteleen myötä syntyneeseen ajatteluun. Platonia ja Aristotelesta edeltäneitä ajattelijoita puolestaan kutsutaan yleensä esisokraatikoiksi eli Sokrateen edeltäjiksi. Tästä nimestä käy hyvin ilmi, mikä vaikutus Platonilla ja Aristoteleella on ollut myöhempään filosofian historian kirjoitukseen: Sokrateessa nähdään ajattelussa tapahtuneen muutoksen raja. Published in Life Writing 2015: 12 (3), 2015, p. 267–287. 2 Celebrity, Confession, and Performance in Pentti Saarikoski’s I Look Out Over Stalin’s Head Abstract This article examines the dynamics between confessional poetry and celebrity by focusing on I Look Out Over Stalin’s Head (1969), a lyrical collection written by Pentti Saarikoski, the most prominent literary celebrity in Finland in the 1960s. The collection is highly self- conscious of the conventions of confessional writing as well as of Saarikoski’s reputation as an alcoholic and a radical left-wing provocateur. Moreover, Saarikoski’s celebrity status contributes to blurring the border between the speaker and the public persona of the writer. The collection can be characterized as a work of confessional performance. Based on recurrent elements in Saarikoski’s media appearances and in his confessional works the article argues that the writer’s public persona was performatively produced and that I Look Out Over Stalin’s Head was part of this performance. Applying Judith Butler’s ideas of performativity and subversiveness, the article analyses the speaker’s performance as an alcoholic and a communist in the context of Finnish celebrity culture and the cultural politics of the late 1960s.
