Gown Before Crown: Scholarly Abjection and Academic Entertainment Under Queen Elizabeth I Abstract In 1592, Queen Elizabeth I and the Privy Council made a rather audacious request of their intellectuals at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The hrC istmas season was fast approaching, and a recent outbreak of the plague prohibited the queen's professional acting company from performing the season's customary entertainment. To avoid having a Christmas without revels, the crown sent messengers to both institutions, asking for university men to come to court and perform a comedy in English. Cambridge's Vice Chancellor, John Still, wished to decline this royal invitation, and for advice on how to do so he wrote to his superior, William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who was not only the Chancellor of Cambridge but also Elizabeth's chief advisor. -

A T ALE OF A FEW CITIES: Topos, Topography and Topicality in Neo-Latin Epic* By Paul Gwynne The city under siege became an essential component in epic narrative when Homer described the Greeks massing around the walls of Troy. In Neo-Latin epic the exploits of Italian condottieri were retold in their victories in siege warfare. Another type of siege epic, however, portrayed events from the perspective of those within the city walls, making the besieged city as much the locus of these epics as Troy had been for Homer. This paper contrasts corporate heroism with heroic individualism in the new age of gunpowder warfare in three epics: Mussato, De Obsidione; De Blarru, Nanceid and Rococciolo, Mutineis. If you intend to blockade our walls and break down our gates by storm, then we are ready: we shall receive firebrands and missiles upon our houses; if you divert our springs, we shall dig for a hasty draught of water and lick with parched tongues the earth we have dug; and, if bread run short, then we shall pollute our lips by gnawing things hideous to see and foul to touch. In defence of freedom we do not shrink from sufferings that were bravely borne by Saguntum when beset by the army of Carthage.1 * The punning subtitle alludes to Ernst Gombrich’s essay “Topos and Topicality in Renaissance Art” in which he defines topos as “the technical term in rhetoric for the commonplace, the general theme with a universal application” and topicality as “the term we use for a specific reference or allusion to events of the time”. -
Twins in Early Modern English Drama and Shakespeare
Downloaded by [New York University] at 04:46 12 April 2017 Twins in Early Modern English Drama and Shakespeare This volume investigates the early modern understanding of twinship through new readings of plays, informed by discussions of twins appear- ing in such literature as anatomy tracts, midwifery manuals, monstrous birth broadsides, and chapbooks. The book contextualizes such dramatic representations of twinship, investigating contemporary discussions about twins in medical and popular literature and how such dialogues resonate with the twin characters appearing on the early modern stage. Murray demonstrates that, in this period, twin births were viewed as biologically aberrant and, because of this classification, authors frequently attempted to explain the phenomenon in ways that call into question the moral and constitutional standing of both the parents and the twins themselves. In line with current critical studies on pregnancy and the female body, discussions of twin births reveal a distrust of the mother and the processes surrounding twin conception; however, a correspond- ing suspicion of twins also emerges, which monstrous birth pamphlets exemplify. This book analyzes the representation of twins in early mod- ern drama in light of this information, moving from tragedies through to comedies. This progression demonstrates how the dramatic potential inherent in the early modern understanding of twinship is capitalized on by playwrights, as negative ideas about twins can be seen transitioning into tragic and tragicomic depictions of twinship. However, by building toward a positive, comic representation of twins, the work additionally suggests an alternate interpretation of twinship in this period, which appreciates and celebrates twins because of their difference. -

Our original intention was merely to furnish a critical edition, with a translation and commentary, of the poetical correspondence between Dante and Del Virgilio. But a close study of Del Virgilio's poem addressed to Mussato, with a view to the discovery of matter illustrative of his correspondence with Dante, convinced us that Dante students would be glad to be able to read it in its entirety. And when we found ourselves thus including the greater part of Del Virgilio's extant work in our book, the pious act of collecting the rest of his poetic remains naturally sug- gested itself; and so our project took the shape of an edition of Dante's Latin Eclogues and of the poetic remains of Del Virgilio, The inclusion in our work of the Epistle to Mussato made some introductory account of the Paduan poet necessary ; and his striking personality, together with the many resemblances and contrasts between his lot and that of Dante, encouraged us to think that such an account would be acceptable to our readers. -
On Seneca, Mussato, Trevet and the Boethian "Tragedies"
Heliotropia 10.1-2 (2013) http://www.heliotropia.org On Seneca, Mussato, Trevet and the Boethian “Tragedies” of the De casibus hile good work has been done on the so-called Paduan prehu- manists since Billanovich put them in the critical spotlight half a W century ago,1 very little has subsequently been accomplished with regard to their influence on Boccaccio, especially his ideas on the relationship among poetry, philosophy and theology. I believe that there is a rich vein yet to be mined in this area, one that will aid us in understanding more profoundly not only his pre-Christian sources, which (always mediated, of course, by the influence of medieval interpretations) range broadly from the Pre-Socratics to Plato and Aristotle, to the Stoics and Neoplatonists, but also the way in which he creatively and convincingly interwove them into a tapestry of Christian doctrine. In other words, there is still something to be learned before we can confidently reconstruct his line, or lines, of humanistic thought. Unfortunately, it has become quite commonplace to think of Boccaccio’s defense of poetry in his final works as something that popped up almost spontaneously when, in reality, those pages actually depict a hypothesis of theologia poetica that evolved over a period of twenty-five years or so. Indeed, we may even say that his development of these holistic ideas, his attempts to unlock the wisdom of the ancients — whether enshrined in highly complex cosmological creations like the Calcidian Timaeus or simply glimpsed in flashes of literary brilliance in a handful of carefully chosen passages here and there — never really assumed a definitive form. -

Do the tissues feel their disintegration? In other words, what will happen to your consciousness. But what is consciousness? Let's see. To try consciously to go to sleep is a sure way of having insomnia, to try to be conscious of one's own digestion is a sure way to upset the stomach. Consciousness is a poison when we apply it to ourselves. Consciousness is a beam of light directed outwards, it lights up the way ahead of us so that we do not trip up. It's like the head-lamps on a railway engine - if you turned the beam inwards there would be a catastrophe. 'So what will happen to your consciousness? Your consciousness, yours, not anybody else's. Well, what are you? That's the crux of the matter. Let's try to find out. What is it about you that you have always known as yourself? What are you conscious of in yourself? Your kidneys? Your liver? Your blood vessels? - No. -

Upon picking up this book for the first time, one is likely to think that the last thing the world needs is another general history of humanism in early Renaissance Italy. This book, however, shows how dangerous it is to rely on first impressions. Scholars who are active in this field have been hearing about Witt’s study for some time before it was actually published–it has been some twenty years in the making–and from this point on it will serve as the standard treatment of its subject. -

GEORGE GASCOIGNE AT OXFORD Roman New Comedy itself, the way that it worked and the way that students/ readers/audience members were taught to approach, understand, and learn from it. We know that in Ferrara, from 1486 onwards, and the performance of Plautus’ Menaechmi, classical comedies, both in Latin and Italian translation, were performed regularly, alongside vernacular plays based on classical narratives. And so we might assume that many among Ariosto’s original audience would appreciate and respond to the many sources at play. We might equally assume that many among the audience at Gray’s Inn would be similarly equipped to respond. In his study of Shakespeare and Classical Antiquity, Colin Burrow makes a persuasive case for how Shakespeare shaped comedies written for Inns performances to first demonstrate awareness of, and secondly to develop, the shared anticipation of classical comedy among the audiences for The Comedy of Errors (Gray’s Inn 1594) and Twelfth Night (Middle Temple in 1602). Acutely aware of the limits of his education among ‘an audience of smartly Latinate young men’,23 Shakespeare explicitly demonstrates his know ledge of conventions in Errors, but was able to play more confidently with them by the time of Twelfth Night. Ironically, however, I would argue that it would not be quite the same case at Gray’s Inn in the 1560s. Lorna Hutson envisages a similar audience to that which we might imagine watching The Comedy of Errors: We need to recover the combination of knowingness and novelty and the sense of fun that -
