Although he has been the subject of numerous scholarly studies, his art continues to pose intriguing problems. This volume brings together com- missioned essays that focus on important topics and themes in Bellini’s ca- reer. They include a consideration of Bellini’s position in the social and professional life of early modern Venice; reassessments of his artistic rela- tionships with his brother-in-law Mantegna, with Flemish painting, and with the “modern style’’ that emerged in Italy around 1500; and explorations of Bellini’s approaches to sculpture and architecture, and to landscape and color, elements that have always been recognized as central to his pictorial genius. The volume concludes with analyses of Bellini’s constantly evolving pictorial technique and the procedures of his busy workshop. RUSSELL has been approved for the School of Art + Design and the College of Fine Arts by Marilyn Bradshaw Professor of Art History Margaret Kennedy-Dygas Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract RUSSELL, SANDRA E., M.A., May 2015, Art History Donatello’s Terracotta Louvre Madonna: A Consideration of Structure and Meaning Director of Thesis: Marilyn Bradshaw A large relief at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (R.F. 353), is one of several examples of the Madonna and Child in terracotta now widely accepted as by Donatello (c. 1386-1466). A medium commonly used in antiquity, terracotta fell out of favor until the Quattrocento, when central Italian artists became reacquainted with it. Terracotta was cheap and versatile, and sculptors discovered that it was useful for a range of purposes, including modeling larger works, making life casts, and molding. Reliefs of the half- length image of the Madonna and Child became a particularly popular theme in terracotta, suitable for domestic use or installation in small chapels. Donatello’s Louvre Madonna presents this theme in a variation unusual in both its form and its approach. In order to better understand the structure and the meaning of this work, I undertook to make some clay works similar to or suggestive of it. -
Saint Sebastian
SAINT SEBASTIAN In his semi-autobiographical novel Confessions of a Mask, the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima described his sexual awakening as a young boy when he came upon a reproduction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a painting by the late Renaissance artist Guido Reni. The event is transferred to the fictional narrator, but recalled the actual event that had proved so formative for Mishima. A remarkably handsome youth was bound naked to the trunk of a tree. His crossed hands were raised high, and the thongs binding his wrists were tied to the tree. No other bonds were visible, and the only covering for the youth's nakedness was a coarse white cloth knotted loosely about his loins... Were it not for the arrows with their shafts deeply sunk into his left armpit and right side, he would seem more a Roman athlete resting from fatigue... The arrows have eaten into the tense, fragrant, youthful flesh, and are about to consume his body from within with flames of supreme agony and ecstasy.' The boy's hands embarked on a motion of which he had no experience; he played with his 'toy': "Suddenly it burst forth, bringing with it a blinding intoxication... Some time passed, and then, with miserable feelings I looked around the desk I was facing... There were cloud-splashes about... Some objects were dripping lazily, leadenly, and others gleamed dully, like the eyes of a dead fish. Fortunately, a reflex motion of my hand to protect the picture had saved the book from being soiled. The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian would prove to be a pivotal theme in Mishima’s life and art to which he would return time and time again. -
Rethinking Savoldo's Magdalenes
Rethinking Savoldo’s Magdalenes: A “Muddle of the Maries”?1 Charlotte Nichols The luminously veiled women in Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo’s four Magdalene paintings—one of which resides at the Getty Museum—have consistently been identified by scholars as Mary Magdalene near Christ’s tomb on Easter morning. Yet these physically and emotionally self- contained figures are atypical representations of her in the early Cinquecento, when she is most often seen either as an exuberant observer of the Resurrection in scenes of the Noli me tangere or as a worldly penitent in half-length. A reconsideration of the pictures in connection with myriad early Christian, Byzantine, and Italian accounts of the Passion and devotional imagery suggests that Savoldo responded in an inventive way to a millennium-old discussion about the roles of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene as the first witnesses of the risen Christ. The design, color, and positioning of the veil, which dominates the painted surface of the respective Magdalenes, encode layers of meaning explicated by textual and visual comparison; taken together they allow an alternate Marian interpretation of the presumed Magdalene figure’s biblical identity. At the expense of iconic clarity, the painter whom Giorgio Vasari described as “capriccioso e sofistico” appears to have created a multivalent image precisely in order to communicate the conflicting accounts in sacred and hagiographic texts, as well as the intellectual appeal of deliberately ambiguous, at times aporetic subject matter to northern Italian patrons in the sixteenth century.2 The Magdalenes: description, provenance, and subject The format of Savoldo’s Magdalenes is arresting, dominated by a silken waterfall of fabric that communicates both protective enclosure and luxuriant tactility (Figs. -
Mantegna's Lamentation Over the Dead Christ
DESCRIVEDENDO THE MASTERPAINTINGS OF BRERA The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Andrea Mantegna Pinacoteca di Brera, Room 6 Formal Description Christ Dead in the Tomb with Three Mourners is the official title of this picture painted by Andrea ManteGna, probably around 1483. It is a work in tempera on canvas painted in a realistic manner and is quite complex to describe. The painting is rectangular in shape, its horizontal side slightly longer than its vertical side. It is 81 centimetres wide and 68 centimetres high. The scene depicted takes place in the tomb, where Jesus Christ's lifeless body has been laid on a slab of marble to be cleaned and oiled with perfumed ointment before burial. Besides Jesus, on one side of the canvas, we see the Grieving faces of a man and two women. The physical presence of Jesus's body dominates the painting, filling most of the available space. Jesus is shown as thouGh we were observinG him from a sliGhtly hiGher viewpoint, not by his side but facinG him from the feet up. His body is thus painted entirely alonG the canvas's vertical axis and so we see the soles of his feet in the foreGround close to the lower edGe, while if we lift our Gaze we move up his body as far as his head in the distance, close to the upper edGe. It is as thouGh Jesus's whole body were compressed between the upper and lower edGes of the canvas: the painter depicts his anatomy realistically, but in a distorted manner in which he has sliGhtly changed the dimensions of the body's individual parts so as to make the perspective he adopts believable. -

1 David Freedberg The Necessity of Emotion: Antonello da Messina’s Dead Christ supported by Angels in the Prado* To look at Antonello da Messina’s painting of the Virgin in Palermo (fig. 1) is to ask three questions (at least): Is this the Virgin Annunciate, the Immaculate Mother of God about to receive the message that she will bear the Son of God? Or is it a portrait, perhaps even of someone we know or might know? Does it matter? No. What matters is that we respond to her as if she were human, not divine or transcendental—someone we might know, even in the best of our dreams. What matters is that she almost instantly engages our attention, that her hand seems to stop us in our passage, that we are drawn to her beautiful and mysterious face, that we recognize her as someone whose feelings we feel we might understand, someone whose emotional state is accessible to us. Immediately, upon first sight of her, we are involved in her; swiftly we notice the shadow across her left forehead and eye, and across the right half of her face, the slight turn of the mouth, sensual yet quizzical at the same time.1 What does all this portend? She has been reading; her hand is shown in the very act of being raised, as if she were asking for a pause, reflecting, no doubt on what she has just seen. Scrovegni Chapel 1 Scrovegni Chapel The Scrovegni Chapel, or Cappella degli Scrovegni, also known as the Arena Chapel, is a church in Padua, Veneto, Italy. It contains a fresco cycle by Giotto, completed about 1305, that is one of the most important masterpieces of Western art. The church was dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità at the Feast of the Annunciation, 1305. Giotto's fresco cycle focuses on the life of the Virgin Mary and celebrates her role in human salvation. The chapel is also known as the Arena Chapel because it was built on land purchased by Enrico Scrovegni that abutted the site of a Roman arena. This space is where an open-air procession and sacred representation of the Annunciation to the Virgin had been played out for a generation before the chapel was built. A motet by Marchetto da Padova appears to have been composed for the dedication on March 25, 1305.[1] The chapel was commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni, whose family fortune was made through the practice of usury, which at this time meant charging interest when loaning money, a sin so grave that it resulted in exclusion from the Christian sacraments.[2] Built on family estate, it is often suggested that Enrico built the chapel in penitence for his father's sins and for Capella degli Scrovegni absolution for his own. Enrico's father Reginaldo degli Scrovegni is the usurer encountered by Dante in the Seventh Circle of Hell. A recent study suggests that Enrico himself was involved in usurious practices and that the chapel was intended as restitution for his own sins.[3] Enrico's tomb is in the apse, and he is also portrayed in the Last Judgment presenting a model of the chapel to the Virgin. -

THE THYROID IN ART Luigi Massimino SENA Clinical Pathology Faculty of Medicine University of Turin (Italy) 1 TAKE ART AND PUT IT IN SCIENCE Art and science are different aspects of human creativity. Over the centuries, artists have made use of the expressive power of images to awaken both emotions and empathy, which are often universal. 2 The thyroid gland (tireos, oblong "shield" , but which in reality meant big stone used as a door or for shutting the wooden door: cover, defend with the shield) is located in a part of the human body, i.e., in the neck, making it clearly visible in the throat when enlarged (goiter from Latin guttur). The prevalence of goiter was already known in ancient times, but the writings that described it were almost always devoid of explanatory drawings. The representation of the goiter is illustrated in the numerous depictions of goitrous men, women and children in coins, sculptures, paintings, simple craft objects and even in forms of folklore that involved persons not engaged in the medical art. The depictions were the works of artists living in endemic areas, or of travelers who illustrated the reality they encountered. The size of the goiter has always provoked amazement or fear, feelings that are associated with the mystery surrounding its origin and function. Over the centuries, it has stimulated the imagination of people, while at the same time it has paved the way to understanding the historical relationship between disease and society (pathocoenosis). 3 PATHOCOENOSIS In 1969, Mirko Drazen Grmek (1924-2000) created the neologism pathocenose or pathocoenosis , that is a “community of diseases”: “the collection of pathological states present in a given population in a certain time and space”. -

Mantegna mixed ground minerals with animal glue, the kind used to size or seal a canvas, and applied the colors to a piece of fine linen prepared with only a very light coat of gesso. Distemper remains water soluble after drying, which allows the painter greater flexibility in blending new paint into existing paint than is afforded by the egg tempera technique. In lesser hands, such opportunities can produce muddy results, but Mantegna used it to produce passages of extraordinarily fine modeling, for example in the flesh of the Virgin’s face and in the turbans of wound cloth worn by her and two of the Magi. Another advantage of the technique is that it produces luminous colors with a matte finish, making forms legible and brilliant, without glare, even in low light. This work’s surface was left exposed, dirtying it, and in an effort to heighten the colors early restorers applied varnish—a bad idea, since unlike oil and egg tempera distem- per absorbs varnish, leaving the paint stained and darkened.1 Try to imagine it in its original brilliant colors, subtly modeled throughout and enamel smooth, inviting us to 1 Andrea Mantegna approach close, like the Magi. -

Kress Collection 1939.1.143 ENTRY The Crucifixion is enacted in front of the crenellated wall of the city of Jerusalem. The cross is flanked above by four fluttering angels, three of whom collect the blood that flows from the wounds in Christ’s hands and side. To the left of the Cross, the Holy Women, a compact group, support the swooning Mary, mother of Jesus. Mary Magdalene kneels at the foot of the Cross, caressing Christ’s feet with her hands. To the right of the Cross stand Saint John the Evangelist, in profile, and a group of soldiers with the centurion in the middle, distinguished by a halo, who recognizes the Son of God in Jesus.[1] The painting’s small size, arched shape, and composition suggest that it originally belonged to a portable altarpiece, of which it formed the central panel’s upper tier [fig. 1].[2] The hypothesis was first advanced by Evelyn Sandberg-Vavalà (originally drafted 1939, published 1969), who based it on stylistic, compositional, and iconographic affinities between a small triptych now in the Galleria Nazionale of Parma [fig. -

If you do this you will be able to understand them better. His art is based on close observation and poetry. Every time you see this sign, look carefully at the detail reproduced then search for it in the work. 1 Andrea Mantegna, SAINT EUPHEMIA These fruits are part of the garland decorating the arch on which the saint's name is written "Santa Eufemia". Look at the sculpture just on your left and com- pare it with the painting. Are the clothes the same? Are the feet placed in the same way? Is the lion in the same place? What is it doing? He looks as though it is nibbling her hand. Now you can see that the sculptor used the painting as a model. Children's Discovery Trail 2 Andrea Mantegna, THE ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERDS This angel with red wings is telling a shepherd that a child called Jesus has been born. The two men in the foreground – look at them ; one of them is the same as the shepherd on the mountain? Which route did he take to come down and see the new-born child. We can give you a clue – he is holding a hat. Then, count the number of sheep in the background.
