Koptina2 Received: 15 April 2021 / Accepted: 23 June 2021 / Published online: 7 July 2021 © The Author(s) 2021 Abstract Lichens are symbiotic organisms formed by a fungus and one or more photosynthetic partners which are usually alga or cyanobacterium. Their diverse and scarcely studied metabolites facilitate adaptability to extreme living conditions. We investigated Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach., a widely distributed lichen, for its antimicrobial and antioxidant potential. E. prunastri was sequentially extracted by hexane (Hex), dichloromethane (DCM) and acetonitrile (ACN) that were screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial (against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans) activities. The Hex extract possessed the highest antioxidant capacity (87 mg ascorbic acid/g extract) corresponding to the highest content of phenols (73 mg gallic acid/g extract). The DCM and Hex extracts were both active against S. aureus (MICs of 4 and 21 µg/ml, respectively) but were less active against Gram-negative bacteria and yeast. The ACN extract exhibited activity on both S. aureus (MIC 14 µg/ml) and C. albicans (MIC 38 µg/ml) and was therefore further fractionated by silica gel column chromatography. The active compound of the most potent fraction was subsequently char- acterized by 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and identifed as evernic acid. -

The Tasmanian lichen collection of John Shirley (1849-1922) (housed in the Queensland Herharium) is examined and re-determined. Two new comhinations, Rinodina 11sperat11 (Shirley) Kantvilas and P_1Tcn11/a ga!aoina (Shirley) Kantvilas, are proposed, and lectotypes are set up for Bacidia weymouthii (Shirley) Zahlbr. and Pyrenu/a ch/oroplaca Shirley from authentic material. HARRIS1 & JAMES C. LENDEMER2 ABSTRACT. – A checklist of 209 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi collected during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA is provided. The new species Opegrapha bicolor R.C. Harris & Lendemer, collected during the Foray, is described. Chrysothrix flavovirens Tønsberg and Merismatium peregrinum (Flotow) Triebel are reported as new to North America. On April 23-26, 2004, we were graciously allowed to be commensals during the First Howard Crum Bryological Workshop in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pennsylvania, USA. Given the dearth of knowledge of lichen distributions in Pennsylvania and the overall lack of recent vouchers, this was a valuable opportunity to collect in what turned out to be a rich and interesting area. We were quite surprised by the apparent high lichen diversity, as well as the number of novelties and rarities, in an area so close to the East Coast megalopolis. In four half-days in the field, we collected 209 species in a limited area of the Pennsylvania part of the Park. Some are clearly new to science of which, Opegrapha bicolor is described here (see Endnote). Two presumably undescribed species of Fellhanera will be published elsewhere, and the Halecania will be included in a forthcoming treatment of Ozark lichens. Others are left for the future, as present material (and our knowledge) are inadequate. -

Many recent studies hypothesize global generality of trait patterns, which would allow for comparison among ecosystems and biomes and provide a foundation for general rules and theories, the so-called “Holy Grail” of ecology. However, the majority of these studies focus on functional trait patterns of vascular plants, with a minority examining the patterns of cryptograms such as lichens. Lichens are an important component of many ecosystems due to their contributions to biodiversity and their key ecosystem services, such as contributions to mineral and hydrological cycles and ecosystem food webs. Lichens are also of special interest because of their reliance on atmospheric deposition for nutrients and water, which makes them particularly sensitive to air pollution. Therefore, they are often used as bioindicators of air pollution, climate change, and general ecosystem health. This thesis examines the functional trait patterns of lichens in two contrasting regions with fundamentally different kinds of data. To better understand the patterns of lichen functional traits, we examined reproductive, morphological, and chemical trait variation along precipitation and temperature gradients in Oregon. -

Panoramic view of its roadside flora reveals that it is replete with rich diversity of Pteridophytes.This is due to unique location of Mizoram, its topography with hills and valleys, and also its geology which provide immense ranges of microclimatic conditions which facilitates its growth. These pteridophytes are one of the source of carbon sink along the road. Some work related to pteridophytes have been reported by some researchers in some protected areas like sanctuaries and some forests in Mizoram. Till date no work has been reported on the diversity, ecology and IUCN red list status of pteridophytes growing along the Hill Roads in Mizoram. The paper enlists he current diversity, habitat and ecology of such pteridophytes. Effort has been made to ascertain their status in the IUCN red list and in Catalogue of Life (COL).The study is likely to help in further capacity augmentation/widening of these roads without harming the current diversity of the pteridophytes growing there .The study also provides a protocol to be followedfor monitoring and management of biodiversity along other roads of this hotspot. -
