Kickstarter campaign leads to revelations about yoga’s origins Roots of Yoga The first compendium of yoga’s core texts, translated, introduced and edited by two of the world’s foremost yoga scholars James Mallinson and Mark Singleton Publishing 26th January 2017 | £10.99 | paperback There are over 2.5 million practitioners of yoga in Britain alone, but surprisingly little knowledge of yoga’s roots amongst its practitioners. Full of postures and breathing practices, but also tales of extreme devotion and imagination, Roots of Yoga is a first stop for anyone curious to learn more than they are told at their yoga class, and an indispensable resource for serious yoga practitioners and teachers. Funded by a $51,000 Kickstarter campaign (http://tinyurl.com/RootsOfYoga), this book collects together, for the first time, the core teachings of yoga in the words of their authors, rather than in the secondary versions of modern interpreters. Among the 100 original texts from 12 different languages are key passages from the Upanishads, the Buddhist and Jaina traditions, the Indian Tantras, and many other texts that are being translated for the first time. Colourful characters and their stories abound: from Puran Puri, who spent the second half of the 18th century travelling with his arms in the air as far as Malaysia, Tibet, Moscow and the Gulf (pp.119-121); to Hari Das, who in 1837 was buried alive in front of the Maharaja and various British officials, and exhumed, still living, 40 days later, having remained in the highest state of yoga (pp. 343-5); via the famous philosopher, Shankaracharya, who used his yogic power to enter and reanimate the body of a recently dead king and make love with the king’s wives (pp.424-5). -

University of Cambridge DHIIR / Department of Social Anthropology INDIC HEALTH AND MEDICINE RESEARCH PROGRAMME (IHMRP) (2000-2004) MODERN YOGA WORKSHOP 2001 Workshop Report by Francoise Barbira Freedman Elizabeth De Michelis Indic-inspired approaches to health, medicine and well-being: contemporary appropriations in cosmopolitan customer-led practices. Report on a workshop held in the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, on 25-26 September 2001 as part of the Health and Medicine Research Programme 1 carried out by the Dharam Hinduja Institute of Indic Research (DHIIR), Faculty of Divinity, in conjunction with the Department of Social Anthropology. First published in Cambridge Anthropology, 22:2, 2000/2001; reproduced by permission. The workshop addressed the development of Yoga and Ayurveda in Europe and America as therapeutic practices since early in the twentieth century. It was designed as a two-day round table and was effective as such with the 19 participants taking an active part in all the discussions. Paper contributors included one speaker from India (another cancelled due to the international crisis), two from the US, two from Germany, three from the UK, one from Denmark.2 Papers were circulated in advance and allocated one or two respondents each to allow for fuller discussion. Other experts, including one health professional, two indologists, one psychologist, two researchers, one anatomist and two FIMED (Foundation for Integrated Medicine) representatives, participated as consultants.3 This Workshop was also aimed at establishing the foundations for a public Conference on the same subject due to take place at the same venue on 20-21 September 2002. One of the two main aims of the 2001 Workshop - 2002 Conference tandem exercise is to produce an in-depth analytical report on how Indic-inspired approaches to health, medicine and wellbeing have been assimilated in the developed world, and to critically discuss the historical, philosophical and intellectual contexts of this phenomenon. -

Journal of Religion and Health https://doi.org/10.1007/s10943-019-00774-1 ORIGINAL PAPER Unbalanced Flows in the Subtle Body: Tibetan Understandings of Psychiatric Illness and How to Deal With It Geofrey Samuel1,2 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract Much of what Western medicine classifes as psychiatric illness is understood by Tibetan thought as associated with imbalance of rlung (wind, breath). Rlung has a dual origin in Indian thought, combining elements from Ayurvedic medicine and Tantric Buddhism. Tibetan theories of rlung seem to correspond in signifcant ways with Western concepts of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and Western medi- cine too has associated psychiatric issues with ANS problems. But what is involved in relating Tibetan ideas of rlung to Western ideas of the emotions and the ANS? The article presents elements of the two systems and then explores similarities and diferences between them. It asks whether the similarities could be the basis for a productive encounter between Tibetan and Western modes of understanding and treating psychiatric illness. What could Western psychiatry learn from Tibetan approaches in this area? Keywords Psychiatric illness · Tibet · Buddhism · Tantra · Subtle body · Autonomic nervous system Introduction As Susannah Deane’s article in this collection explains (Deane, this issue), much of the domain of psychiatric illness in biomedicine is understood in Tibetan medicine in terms of disorders in an internal process known as rlung (pronounced ‘loong’), sometimes translated as ‘wind.’ In this article, I examine the use of rlung as an explanation for psychiatric illness and ask how it might relate to biomedical and neuroscientifc modes of explanation for psychiatric disorders. -
