We would like to start off by thanking the membership for several reasons. We noticed a spike in tournament participation last year: both member events and the events also open to non- members. Secondly, we received a great number of responses to the survey sent out to members during the winter. Remember to use your free guest round, or free cart fee if you completed a survey. We thank you for your support of tournament golf and our survey. The Committee has met several times this year to go over many things, including the results of the survey. We have noticed that many members responded that they want our events and tournaments to be fair for all. To achieve this, members want the Committee to ‘police’ the handicaps of all members at our club more vigorously. We are looking into ways to do this. We have developed a very fun-filled tournament calendar this year. All the member tournaments you have grown to love (or hate – depending on previous year’s results) will be back and we have several fun tournaments that are open to the members, players pass holders and the public. These are fun events that allow for friendly competition amongst the members as most events have two-player team competition formats. We encourage everyone to review the contents of this program, sign up for as many tournaments as possible and get your money’s worth at the club this year. We have two new members joining the Membership Committee this year. Lee Fields and Dave Smith join Bill Denfeld, Tom Dunaway and Chris Warfield to form the member component of the Committee. The Professional staff component of the Committee is made up of Willy Lutz, PGA, Chadwick Jones, Brian Shiflett and Joshua Chambers. Willy, Chadwick and Brian have been key players in our discussions regarding the upcoming season. Additionally, Joshua has attended the meetings representing the Food and Beverage Team to provide insight on special tournament food offerings and everyday fare throughout the year. We are extremely excited about 2012. The warm “winter” weather has allowed the Club to get off to a fast start and playing conditions are approaching midseason form. The St. Patrick’s Day Scramble had a record number of participants, the Masters Scramble was heavily attended as well, and the South Riding A-Team played a great regular season and advanced to the playoffs for the first time in several years. This is a great start to what is likely to be a very successful year for the members and the Club. We encourage you to read the entire golf program and note those events in which you may be interested. Also please take the time to read the South Riding Golf Club Newsletter each month, as it is full of up-to-date information and can easily be viewed in the Members section of our website. Follow the Club and get daily updates on our Facebook page. If you have any questions, the Professional Staff and/or the members of the Committee are always at your service. Thanks, Chris Warfield Chairman, South Riding Golf Club Membership Committee Willy Lutz, PGA General Manager, Head Golf Professional 1 The South Riding Golf Club Membership Committee The function of the South Riding Golf Club Membership Committee is to promote good fellowship and sportsmanship among members and to encourage active participation in events at the South Riding Golf Club. The Membership Committee serves Club members by providing member input to Club management on policies and operations. The Committee also administrates the handicap system of the Club and arbitrates handicap and rules issues. The Membership Committee is made up of five (5) member positions and four (4) representatives from the South Riding Golf Club management team. All member positions are filled by members in good standing appointed by the General Manager of the Club. The 2012 Committee serves a term of one year, effective from January 1st through December 31, 2012. The Committee holds regular (closed) meetings to address golf and Club related matters. Members that are interested in joining the South Riding Golf Club Membership Committee are encouraged to contact the General Manager. The Club’s management is responsible for managing Club employees, Club finances and for implementing or enforcing Club policies and procedures. The Membership Committee is a vehicle for Club management to partner with members to develop plans for the 2012 golf season, including the schedule and format of events, and to get feedback on other matters important to members. The Membership Committee will hold one meeting during the golf season that will be open to all South Riding Golf Club members in good standing. This meeting will be used to provide the status of completed activities and events, and to communicate information on key upcoming events. The South Riding Golf Club staff will participate in the meeting to provide status on Club activities and course maintenance. Finally, time will be allowed for Q&A between members, the Membership Committee and Management team. The date and time of this meeting will be announced later in the golf season. The member participants on the Membership Committee consider their liaison role to the Club as vital. These members are available to address any general questions brought to them by the membership at large. Members concerns, on a confidential basis, can be brought to any member of the Committee and will be forwarded as necessary to the management staff for consideration. An unmarked police vehicle being retired by the Village of Lombard, Illinois, the car figured prominently in the final day of competition during the 2012 Ryder Cup at nearby Medinah Country Club, when deputy police chief Pat Rollins whisked European golfer Rory McIlroy to the golf course with just minutes to spare before his tee-time. McIlroy’s 20-minute ride in the Crown Vic made the difference between Team Europe’s win and loss. The 2012 Ryder Cup, held in September, was one for the record books as the best comeback cup in the event’s 85-year history. The Europeans were down 10-6 going into the final day of play, and the US team required only 4-1/2 points to take the championship. By the end of the tournament, Europe had scored 14-1/2 points to the US team’s 13-1/2 points to win, a slim margin of victory that would have vanished but for McIlroy’s trip to the golf course, courtesy of the Lombard police department and the Crown Vic. A two-time major champion and the #1-ranked player in the world, McIlroy thought his tee-time was at 12:25 on the last day of the competition.

  • The Unholy Alliance of Sports Performance and Education for Apprentice Golfers Within an Academy Structure
DAZZLING DREAMS, DAWNING REALITY: THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE OF SPORTS PERFORMANCE AND EDUCATION FOR APPRENTICE GOLFERS IN AN ACADEMY STRUCTURE by JONATHAN WRIGHT A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham For the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences University of Birmingham June 2015 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This research followed the journey and experiences of twenty-four apprentice golfers on an academy programme of sports performance and education delivered via a college-based system in England. Apprentice golfers were followed through a two-year programme linked to the England talent pathway, with the intended outcome of propelling them on a journey of golfing achievement, but with the back up of academic qualifications. A key aim of this piece of work was to understand the expectations of the apprentice golfers on joining the programme and to trace how these, as well as anticipated exit routes from the programme, developed and were shaped by their experiences. There are innumerable factors that mediate the journey of individuals through sport, and it is clear that this development is not experienced in a linear fashion (Bailey et al 2010).

  • Understanding the Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Sports Performance Under Pressure Through Cognitive Training
Understanding The Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Sports Performance Under Pressure Through Cognitive Training Emmanuel Ducrocq Department of Psychological Sciences Birkbeck, University of London A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2018 1 The thesis includes research that appears in the following articles: Chapter 2: (3 experiments) Ducrocq, E., Wilson, M., Vine, S., & Derakshan, N (2016). Training attentional control improves cognitive and motor task performance. Journal of sport and exercise psychology, 5, 521-533. Chapter 3: Ducrocq, E., Wilson, M., & Derakshan, N (2017). Adaptive working memory training reduces the negative impact of anxiety on competitive motor performance. Journal of sport and exercise psychology, 8, 1-11. 2 ABSTRACT Accumulating research has emphasised that anxiety can profoundly interfere with task performance during sporting competitive contexts. Recent research has implicated disruptions to attentional control in explaining such impairments. The present PhD thesis intended to build upon recent advances in sports science and cognitive affective neuroscience, by marrying theoretical predictions from the Attentional Control Theory (ACT; Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos & Calvo, 2007) with recent developments in cognitive training, to develop lab based training interventions, to improve attentional focus and performance in lab-based and field- based sporting tasks performed under pressure. In doing so, another critical aim of the thesis was to identify potential neurocognitive mechanisms by which the experience of pressure related anxiety in sporting contexts can lead to impairments in motor performance. In Chapter 2, a sample of tennis players undertook training on a novel visual search training task designed to enhance inhibitory control. Transfer effects of training were observed on a lab index of inhibition, tennis performance and gaze behaviours reflecting attentional control in tennis.
