Trois sections sont tout particulièrement réservées à des projets spécifiques : Feature, Statements et Unlimited. Feature réunit un ensemble de trente-deux stands curatés, centrés sur des expositions personnelles ou de groupe d’artistes ou de mouvements significatifs qui ont marqué l’histoire de l’art des XXe et du XXIe siècles. Statements est entièrement consacré à la scène émergente avec des projets de jeunes artistes. Enfin, Unlimited est un espace unique où la foire se transforme en biennale pour accueillir des installations de grandes dimensions, des performances et des projections de vidéos. Dans cet « Art Basel Artists Guide » publié par Le Quotidien de l’Art, nous proposons des focus sur une sélection d’artistes et de leurs œuvres exposées dans ces secteurs. Des critiques se penchent sur leurs créations pour offrir une vision de la scène artistique internationale telle qu’elle apparaît sur Art Basel 2016. l Every year, Art Basel presents a selection of international artists represented by the most prominent galleries worldwide. Three sectors are specially dedicated to specific projects: Feature, Statements and Unlimited. Feature showcases 32 galleries presenting booths with curated projects that may include solo shows or thematic exhibits of artistic groups or movements that marked the 20th and 21st-century art. Statements is entirely devoted to the emerging scene with new outstanding projects by young artists. As for Unlimited, it’s unique exhibition platform transforms the fair in a biennial presenting large-scale installations, live performances and video projections. In this “Art Basel Artists Guide” published by Le Quotidien de l’Art - The Art Daily News, we focus on a selection of artists and their works exhibited in these sectors. Celle du monde arabe, mais aussi de la planète tout entière est au cœur du travail du duo palestinien Basel Abbas et Ruanne Abou-Rahme, lauréat du Prix Abraaj. Cette œuvre de recherche sur un présent en crise et un désastre continu est à l’intersection de la culture et du politique. Cette fois, les duettistes sont partis d’un poème de l’essayiste féministe américaine Adrienne Rich, Diving into the Wreck, point de départ couplé à des séjours dans des villages palestiniens détruits. OF GRAND RAPIDS JUNE 2021 New Holocaust Memorial at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park Generously Given by The Pestka Family The Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids has received a generous gift from the Pestka Family in memory of their father Henry, a Holocaust survivor, and the millions of other Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Henry Pestka was born in Poland, and deported to the Auschwitz death camp as a young man. Henry managed to escape during a death march, and joined the Free French in the fight against the Nazis. After the war ended, Henry immigrated to the United States and settled in Grand Rapids. The gift will be used to establish the first Holocaust memorial in Grand Rapids, to be located at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. The selected sculpture, by Israeli artist Ariel Schlesinger, is titled Ways to Say Goodbye. It is an exceptional work of contemporary sculpture dealing with themes of profound loss and grief, and will serve to memorialize the millions who perished in the Holocaust and the Holocaust survivors of Western Michigan. About the Artist Ariel Schlesinger (b. 1980, Jerusalem) reveals the poetry, poignancy and potential of everyday things. Through precise interventions, creative engineering and trompe l’oeil, Ariel Schlesinger’s work challenges our perceptions and encourages us to look at the familiar in new ways. Without presents artworks by a number of international artists, which continue this process of, and approach to, the production of art. More significantly however, all of artists included in the exhibition have made works that directly address Monk’s work, or himself, using his work or his presence in various ways and in different circumstances. The exhibition speaks of desire to rethink ways in which exhibitions can be constructed and brought forward to the public. Making a portrait of a particular artist through an exhibition of artworks by other artists, it revises the idea of a solo exhibition by fusing it together with the model of the group exhibition – an exhibition that is about Jonathan Monk but seemingly without Jonathan Monk. Without says as much about the artist as well as his approach to work, the work itself and its influence on others, than it does about the artists included and their individual practices.

Tendencies of the 1960s and 1970s, which are one of our gallery’s focal points, essentially aimed at casting new light on the traditional understanding of art. Free from this specifically artistic discourse contemporary artists often focus on a new perception of everyday objects. Sometimes, their creations thus tend to be surreal, comical or absurd. With «Topsy-Turvy World» we will present works that distinctly show these aspects. In a photograph of Roman Signer for instance, a red kayak in a barrel contrasts with the misty melancholic autumn landscape that surrounds this curious «time sculpture». In Koka Ramishvili’s videos, someone pours liquid out onto a table instead of into the cup – a gesture that seems funny at first but that in fact is subversive. In Sébastien de Ganay’s work, the national colors of France shine from a traffic light that is literally «folded» and that sounds Serge Gainsbourg’s reggae version of the «Marseillaise». Reto Boller mounts six motorcycle helmets in two rigid rows to the wall.
