digestn°1 Presentation

Peeping Tom is a non-profit organization (Association Loi 1901) aimed to promote emerging artists: www.peepingtomgalerie.com

After some successful auction sale, collaborations with magazines and exhibitions (see press review in section 3 of the press kit) , Peeping Tom is now launching its first publication : Peeping Tom’s digest.

Peeping Tom’s digest is co-published by Double magazine /Editions Otherwise. www.lemagazinedouble.com

This first issue of Peeping Tom’s digest is dedicated to the Berlin art scene. Berlin being one of the leading place of creation for many years. Peeping Tom was willing to measure the pulse of its art community and showcase some of its highlights.

For this publication, Peeping Tom scouted talents through an unconventional open call for submissions (see next page), based on the traditional system of chain of letter : in order to be eligible, aside from being part of the Berlin art scene, each applicant needed to forward the open call to one or several Berlin artists he (she) greatly admires. This system of chain letters placed each participant in the position of a curator/editor by proposing one or several artists. Peeping Tom believes that artists are the most exciting curators and wanted them to take part of the process of creation of this magazine.

This process brought out a network through a pyramid of contributions: in total, peeping tom received more than 220 submissions and selected 53 artists to be part of this first publication.

THE CHAIN is also explaining the process and results of this one-of-a-kind experiment: the story and success of a chain letter that really works! The genealogy of the chain letter has been recreated and is on display in the publication: the reader is able to see how all the different connections took place in this contemporary art chain of support.

This magazine thought as an exhibition is a platform for artists to showcase their work. It presents artworks from diverse horizons including photography, video art, paintings, , music, theatre, dance, performance, design….etc.No restriction in terms of medium : Peeping Tom is looking to dissolve the boundaries between the different art disciplines.

This magazine primarily showcases a new generation of artists through a selective and ambitious selec- tion. Unencumbered by the demand of profits, Peeping Tom is able to follow an unconventional, cutting edge approach. As a result of its relevant selections, Peeping Tom’s digest is a space for both professionals and amateurs, to discover the works of emerging artists.

Please have a look to the following open call for a clearer understanding. ’s

after party c/o moune produced by andrea crews: live concert by phoebe jean 4. Who is Peeping Tom? presentation

Peeping Tom is a collective made up of Caroline Niémant (Curator/Photo Editor) and Stéphane Blanc aka Mister White (Art Director/Artist).

Peeping Tom is an initiative created by I’m not a girl who misses much, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting and promoting contemporary artists as well as making contemporary art available to the general public.

As a promoter and seeker of new talent, Peeping Tom creates and produces special projects showcasing emerging artists through: * exhibitions * auctions * collaborations with arts institutions, magazines, etc. * publications such as magazines, catalogues, artists’ books, etc.

Peeping Tom’s approach is multidisciplinary and embraces the fields of art, fashion, photography, and music. In a desire not to be limited to one mode of expression, Peeping Tom is perpetually adjusting and changing without constraints in terms of a set format. Depending on the project, Peeping Tom can be the curator, editor, photo editor (for magazines), events’ producer (auctions, performances, exhibitions, etc.), or art director/graphic designer for various publications (magazines, catalogues, books, etc.) Each new pro- ject is its own unique entity, conceptually custom-made, but always consistent with previous efforts. The projects of Peeping Tom do not resemble one another in form, but rather connect to each other through a coherent curatorial voice.

For more information: www.peepingtomgalerie.com

The two collaborative founding members of Peeping Tom are Caroline Niémant and Stéphane Blanc.

Caroline Niémant:

Following three years of film studies in Paris (La Sorbonne-Nouvelle/Paris III and ESRA /Ecole Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle), Caroline Niémant graduated from the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York in 2000.

After working in the field of commercial photography for five years in New York (Art + Commerce, Ame- rican Express Publishing, Stephen Lewis Studio), she founded PH Print, a photographers’ agency within the company Première Heure in Paris (www.premiere-heure.fr). Through Ph Print, she represented many well-known photographers, including Nadav Kander, Lodge Kerrigan, Koto Bolofo, René & Radka, Matthew Monteith, Arnaud Pyvka, Florian Geiss, Jonathan Frantini, and several others.

In November 2006, Caroline Niémant took a break from commercial photography in order to create the non-profit organization Peeping Tom in a desire to dedicate herself fully to contemporary art in general and emerging artists in particular.

///////////////////// Stéphane Blanc aka Mister White

Born in 1977 in the Paris suburb of Clamart, Stephane Blanc studied visual communication at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Industries Graphiques (Ecole Estienne) in Paris (www.ecole-estienne.org). After graduating in 2000, he became an Art Director for the advertising agency Reflex (www.reflexgroup. com). In 2003, he left to work freelance in order to pursue his career as a visual artist. He alternates between personal projects and assignments as a art director or graphic designer for clients such as Levi’s, Above ma- gazine in London (www.above-magazine.com) and Les Editions Jalou in Paris (www.jaloufashion.com). He has also collaborated with many artists, including designing monograph books for photographer Melanie Bonajo (www.d-e-s-a-s-t-e-r.ch) and directing a documentary for Nadav Kander’s (www.nadavkander.com) solo show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (www.palaisdetokyo.com). Since 2006, Stephane Blanc has also been the Creative Director of Peeping Tom. For more information, please visit: www.misterwhite.org

In addition to their work at Peeping Tom, Stéphane Blanc and Caroline Niémant are respecti- vely the Art Director and Photo Editor of the French fashion & culture magazine Double (www.lemagazinedouble.com).

Some of Peeping Tom projects:

November 2006/Paris -Exhibition and Auction Sale

The first initiative of Peeping Tom took place as an unconventional auction sale, combining established photographers and emerging artists. A concept without precedent in France, this first edition was held at Galerie Gana-Beaubourg in Paris on November 17th, 2006, in parallel of the Paris Photo fair.

Having for ambition to upset current conventions, Peeping Tom pro- posed not only accessible prices but also a festive atmosphere very different from the high-end Parisian sales rooms( cocktail, DJ...etc...).

These sales, showcasing the avant-garde photography scene are based on the solidarity of established photographers who accepted to propose their prints at affordable prices. These auction sales have the double objective to give some exposure to emerging artists and to make contemporary photography available to the general public.

Mixing culture with «joie de vivre», Peeping Tom auction sales are very far from the traditional austerity of conventional openings. These informal and playful sales familiarize a new, amateur public with the world of auction bidding, creating a new generation of collectors. Peeping tom is an exceptional opportunity to acquire the original print of a famous photographer at an accessible price or to speculate on a new disco- very. One of the purpose of these auction sales is also to create a large network of photographers, clients and buyers.

Arnhem Fashion Biennale represents more than 10,000 m2 of fashion-related experiences at three atmospheric ve- nues. December 2007 –Joie de Construction Galerie Gana-Beaubourg Paris

This group show is the second event organized by peeping tom in collaboration with the Gana-Beaubourg Gallery in Paris. After a successful exhibition/auction sale in November 2006, Caroline Niémant is today the curator of a group exhibition pairing the works of photographers Melanie Bonajo (Dutch), Jaap Scheeren (Dutch), and Lukas Wassmann (Swiss).

These three photographers represent a new photography, widly exhibited and well recognized abroad, but unfortunately still ba- rely visible in France. It feels important to offer these artists a large-scale show in Paris, in order to familiarize the French public with this very contemporary approach to photography.

On the opening date of the exhibition, the audience was invited to attend a performance program: Dimension Variable ( Voin de Voin + Kinga Kielczynska + Janneke Raaphorst) and Eva Maria Küpfer.

Galerie Gana-Beaubourg belongs to Gana Art in Seoul, one of the leading Art Center in South Korea. Since its foundation in 1983, Gana Art Gallery organized over 600 exhibitions, representing artists from Korea and abroad. Located in the center of Paris - right by the Centre Georges Pompidou, Galerie Gana-Beaubourg is a unique space for contemporary Korean art and the French-Korean cultural exchange. Since 1995, Galerie Gana- Beau- bourg welcomes international artists in their 2-floor exhibition space (300 square meters).
