Summary This report was written in response to the Request for Service, “Profiling of Small-scale fish- ing communities in the Baltic Sea.” The European Commission has tabled a proposal for a multi-annual plan, which includes the reduction of TACs, to ensure the sustainable long-term management of the cod stocks in the Baltic Sea and the fisheries exploiting these stocks. The potential impacts of the plan to the small-scale fleet are of particular interest to Member States and stakeholders. The Commission is particularly interested in understanding the likely impacts of proposed TAC and fishing effort reductions on the small scale fleet and its com- munities in the Baltic region. Experience has shown that key to the quick and efficient assessment of impacts of manage- ment plans and actions, is the availability of community profiles. Community Profiling is the first step for establishing a more generalized social impact assessment (SIA) methodology framework for use in a full fledged impact assessment exercise. Innovative Fisheries Management (IFM), an Aalborg University Research Centre, undertook this report with the understanding that key requirements of the request for service were: 1. Examine a means to establish a social impact assessment (SIA) methodology frame- work for the Baltic region. 2. Design and carry out pilot baseline community profiles for Denmark, Poland, Ger- many, and Sweden, focusing on small-scale sectors dependent on cod. 1. Social Impact Assessment through Community Profiles - a Methodology The social impact assessment methodology presented in this report is based upon methods developed for the EU 6FP project UNCOVER, “Understanding the methods of stock reCOV- ERy,” through participation on a DEFRA-funded UK Ports Data-frame project, and from pre- vious experience in NOAA Fisheries (USA) compiling an SIA methods handbook. Standards have been adjusted for the European context, and taking a logical next step from PESCA pro- gramme (ended 1999) and the FIFG programmes, which were designed to help fishing de- pendent regions cope with the crisis in fishing,

The MARINER’S MIRROR The International Journal of the Society for Nautical Research Bibliography for 2011 Compiled by Karen Partridge London The Society for Nautical Research 2 The Mariner’s Mirror Bibliography for 2011 Introduction This, the twenty-ninth annual maritime bibliography, includes books and articles published in 2011, as well as some works published in earlier years. The subjects included are as follows: naval history, mercantile history, nautical archaeology (but not the more technical works), biography, voyages and travel, and art and weapons and artefacts. A list of acquisitions of manuscripts precedes the published works cited, and I am, as always, grateful to The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission (TNA: HMC) for providing this. With regard to books, International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) have been included, when available. This bibliography for 2011 was prepared and edited by Karen Partridge. Any correspondence relating to the bibliography should be sent to her at: 12 The Brambles, Limes Park Road, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, pe27 5nj email: [email protected] The compiler would like to thank everyone who contributed to the present bibliography, and always welcomes the assistance of readers. I should also like to acknowledge my use of the material found in the Tijdschrift voor Zeegeschiedenis. Introductory note to accessions 2011 In its annual Accession to Repository survey, The National Archives collects information from over 200 record repositories throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions received in the previous 12 months. This information is added to the indexes to the National Register of Archives, and it is also edited and used to produce 34 thematic digests that are then accessed through the National Archives website (www.national archives.gov.uk/ accessions).

  • Ancestors of Charles Rietesel
Ancestors of Charles Rietesel Generation 1 1. Charles Rietesel, son of Joachim Carl Friedrich Rietesel and Amalia Johanna Voss, was born on October 14, 1877 in Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. He died on January 27, 1949 in McHenry County, IL. He married Karolina Tron on October 26, 1904 in Vanderburgh, Indiana. She was born on September 11, 1875 in Posey County, IN. She died on July 28, 1964 in Cook County, IL. Notes for Charles Rietesel: In the 1910 Census he is listed as being born in Illinois but a WWII draft card explicitly names Stralsund as his birthplace and uses the 'Rietesel' spelling. In 1930 they are living in McHenry Illinois (Census spelling=Rietzel). They own a home worth $5,000 and he is a mechanic. Notes for Karolina Tron: Known as Caroline. Generation 2 2. Joachim Carl Friedrich Rietesel, son of Johann Joachim Riedesel and Maria Dorothea Holfreter, was born on February 21, 1851 in Muucks, Nordvorpommern, Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Germany. He died between 1910-1920 in probably Chicago. He married Amalia Johanna Voss on February 20, 1876 in Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. 3. Amalia Johanna Voss, daughter of Johann Friedrich Voß and Johanne Marie Brodthagen, was born on May 15, 1854 in Gutglück, Nordvorpommern, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. She died after 1940. Notes for Joachim Carl Friedrich Rietesel: Almost certainly the party that arrived in Baltimore on the ship Leipzig out of Bremen on July 7, 1880 consisted of Friedrich, his wife (whose name is obliterated) and Carl age 2 1/2 years. Friedrich's age and that of Carl/Charles perfectly matches a "Rietzel" household in Chicago in 1900.

  • The Allocation of Fishing Rights in Uk Fisheries A
THE ALLOCATION OF FISHING RIGHTS IN UK FISHERIES A. Hatcher* and A. Read** * Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE) University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth PO4 8JF, United Kingdom <[email protected]> ** Danbrit Ship Management Ltd 8 Abbey Walk, Grimsby DN31 1NB, United Kingdom 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The UK fishing industry The United Kingdom has a long history of fishing, reflecting its position as an island with a relatively long coastline and its proximity to the productive fishing grounds of the European continental shelf, notably the North Sea, the English Channel and the West of Scotland. The UK fisheries are heterogeneous and this is reflected in a complex fleet structure. The shape of the modern UK fleet is the product of technological and market changes together with political developments, in particular the loss of access to traditional distant water grounds (particularly Iceland and Greenland) in the 1970s and the development of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) by the European Community (EC - which the UK joined in 1972). Under the CFP (see below) there have been national quotas for most stocks since the early 1980s, coupled with a succession of fleet reduction programmes (the so-called MAGPs or multi-annual guidance programmes). There are currently just over 8000 fishing vessels in the UK, although nearly three-quarters of these are inshore boats under 10m in length. Table 1 shows the trend in vessel numbers for the period 1994 to 1999 by vessel type (the “sectors” shown correspond to the classification used by the EC for measuring fleet size).
