He has been the director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Tokyo since 2013. His translations of Japanese literature into Italian include works by Kawabata Yasunari, Murakami Haruki, Yoshimoto Banana, Nakajima Atsushi, Inoue Yasushi and Miyazawa Kenji. He was awarded the Noma Award for the Translation of Japanese Literature and the Grinzane Cavour Prize (Lifetime Achievement Award) in 2001 and 2008 respectively. Helen Eastman is Artistic Associate of the Archive for the Performance of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford University and Director of the Cambridge Greek Play. She has worked as a director of theatre and opera throughout Europe and has written a number of plays and librettos. She founded the Live Canon ensemble. She is about to be the Peter Wall Institute Artist in Residence and Visiting Scholar at Th e University of British Columbia. Her research has focused on classical reception in contemporary theatre and poetry. Sofi a Frade is Lecturer in Classics at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. Her research interests focus on the politics of Greek tragedy and performance reception in Portugal. She is the author of Heracles and Athenian Propaganda: Politics, Imagery and Drama (Bloomsbury, forthcoming). Adam Ganz is Reader in Screenwriting at Royal Holloway, University of London, as well as being a professional screenwriter and director for radio, fi lm and television. His research focuses on audiovisual narrative, on the television development process, and on the collaboration between author and audience. His dramas for radio include Th e Chemistry Between Th em (2014), Th e Gestapo Minutes (2013), Nuclear Reactions (2010) and Listening to the Generals (2009). Aft er teaching at Reading, Oxford, Durham and Royal Holloway universities, Edith Hall took up a Chair in Classics at King’s College London in 2012. She is also co- founder and Consultant Director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama ( APGRD ) at Oxford. Her latest book is Introducing the Ancient Greeks (W. W. Norton, 2014). She has recently been awarded the Erasmus Medal of the European Academy for her research. viii Contributors ix Lorna Hardwick is Emeritus Professor Classical Studies at the Open University UK and an Honorary Research Associate of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford. With James Porter she is series editor of the Classical Presences series (Oxford University Press). Recent publications have included essays on the relationship between translation and reception of Greek epic, drama and historiography and the implications for subsequent cultural histories. She is currently working on a second edition for Cambridge University Press of her Reception Studies (2003). William Maynard Hutchins , who is a professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, was educated at Berea College, Yale University and the University of Chicago. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant for literary translation in 2005–2006 and a second in 2011–2012. He was co- winner of the 2013 Saif Ghobash/Banipal Prize. Anna Ljunggren is Professor of Russian at Stockholm University. Her main area of research is nineteenth- and twentieth- century poetry. She has also conducted a project dedicated to contemporary Russian prose at the turn of the millennium. She is originally from St Petersburg, where she gained her MA in Romance languages, and she taught for a number of years in the United States. Fiona Macintosh is Professor of Classical Reception and Director of the APGRD at the University of Oxford. Her publications include Dying Acts (Palgrave Macmillan, 1994), Greek Tragedy and the British Th eatre 1660–1914 (with Edith Hall; Oxford University Press, 2005) and Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus (Cambridge University Press, 2009). She has edited numerous APGRD volumes, most recently Th e Oxford Handbook of Greek Drama in the Americas (with Kathryn Bosher, Justine McConnell and Patrice Rankine; Oxford University Press, 2015). Sebastian Matzner is Lecturer in Comparative Literature at King’s College London. His research focuses on interactions between classical and modern literature, particularly in relation to literary and critical theory, the history of sexualities, and the theory and poetics of intercultural encounters across time. His doctoral thesis, Th e Forgotten Trope: Metonymy in Poetic Action , won the University of Heidelberg’s Prize for Classical Philology and Literary Th eory and is forthcoming as a monograph.

    MILNE, LEAH A., PhD. “Necessary Fictions”: Authorship and Transethnic Identity in Contemporary American Narratives. (2015) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 352 pp. As a theory and political movement of the late 20th century, multiculturalism has emphasized recognition, tolerance, and the peaceful coexistence of cultures, while providing the groundwork for social justice and the expansion of the American literary canon. However, its sometimes uncomplicated celebrations of diversity and its focus on static, discrete ethnic identities have been seen by many as restrictive. As my project argues, contemporary ethnic American novelists are pushing against these restrictions by promoting what I call transethnicity, the process by which one formulates a dynamic conception of ethnicity that cuts across different categories of identity. Through the use of self-conscious or metafictional narratives, authors such as Louise Erdrich, Junot Díaz, and Percival Everett mobilize metafiction to expand definitions of ethnicity and to acknowledge those who have been left out of the multicultural picture. I further argue that, while metafiction is often considered the realm of white male novelists, ethnic American authors have galvanized self-conscious fiction—particularly stories depicting characters in the act of writing—to defy multiculturalism’s embrace of coherent, reducible ethnic groups who are best represented by their most exceptional members and by writing that is itself correct and “authentic.” Instead, under the transethnic model, ethnicity is self-conflicted, forged through ongoing revision and contestation and in ever- fluid responses to political, economic, and social changes. “NECESSARY FICTIONS”: AUTHORSHIP AND TRANSETHNIC IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NARRATIVES by Leah A. As a result, the main peculiarity of Percival Everett’s novels is that the author presents his own vision of American and African American literatures and this way of interpretation is based on postmodernist aesthetics mostly. In conclusion, the creativity of Percival Everett is diverse and it presents itself a combination of new and traditional approaches to the themes of American and African American literatures.     Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. It presents a statistical evaluation of a bibliography of translated books and provides an overview of publishing this literature in Europe. The bibliography highlights some of the trends in publishing, including the distribution of languages and genres. This study offers an analysis of publishers involved in the dissemination of the translations and retraces the reasons for the proliferation of translated Indigenous books since the mid-1980s. It identifies Indigenous films, literary prizes and festivals as well as broader international events as central causes for the increase in translations. The popular appeal of Indigenous literature of Aotearoa/New Zealand has increased significantly over the last three decades. The translation of Indigenous books and their subsequent emergence in continental European markets are evidence of a perceptible change from a once predominantly local market to a now increasingly globally read and published body of literature. Despite the increase in the number of translations, however, little scholarship has been devoted to the history of translated Indigenous New Zealand literature.1 This study addresses that lack of scholarship by retracing the history of European translations of this body of literature and presenting extensive reference data to facilitate follow-up research. Its objective is to present a bibliography of translated books and book chapters and a statistical evaluation based on that bibliography.

Students need to have a sound basis to enrol on the module, as follows: Students who have studied Latin Language (Beginners) module usually need to have achieved 70% to be eligible for this module. First year undergraduates would normally have studied Latin at A level but not achieved the A grade necessary for Latin Literary Texts. Any undergraduate with a good GCSE pass who proposes to take this course should contact me in early September, since experience has shown that the two-year gap in studying Latin means that students are often not adequately prepared for the demands of this course. I will send revision material at the start of September to help them get up to speed and will set a diagnostic paper in the first week of term to see whether they will be able to thrive on the course. Anyone who does not do well in the diagnostic test will be advised to enrol on either the Latin Language or the Greek Language module. Attendance There are three hours of teaching each week. Attendance is required at all classes. If you are ill, you should contact your lecturer by email as soon as possible giving an indication of why you could not be expected to attend.

By this framing, the continuing popularity of stories about paranormal phenomena and supernatural entities – on mainstream television, or in print genres such as urban fantasy and paranormal romance – may seem to be a regressive reaction against the authority of and experience of living in technoscientific modernity. Nevertheless, the boundaries of science fiction, as with any genre, are relational rather than fixed, and critical engagements with Western/Northern technoscientific knowledge and practice and modern human identity and being may be found not just in science fiction “proper,” or in the scholarly field of science and technology studies, but also in the related genres of fantasy and paranormal romance.

In the past, it was the language of the state and literature. However, Occitan dialects have been in a slow decline, beginning with the Ordinance of Villers-Coterêts in 1539 which banned the use of Occitan in state affairs. While this did little to affect the daily life and usage of Occitan, it established a precedent that is still referred to in modern arguments about the use of regional languages (Costa, 2). In the beginning of the 21st century, the position of Occitan dialects in Midi is precarious. This thesis will investigate the current use of Occitan dialects in and around Montpellier, France, particularly which dialects are most commonly used in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon (where Montpellier is located), the environment in which they are learned, the methods of transmission, and the general attitude towards Occitan. It will also discuss Occitan’s current use in literature, music, and politics. While the primary geographic focus of this thesis will be on Montpellier and its surroundings, it should somewhat applicable to the whole of Occitan speaking France.
