Born in , he is considered one of the world's preeminent singers especially for Mozart and Rossini’s repertoire. He studied with and Claude Thiolas and he made his debut in 1973 at the age of twenty-one in Aosta as the Count Monterone in Verdi's . In 1974 he is Marcello (La Bohème) at Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo and in 1975 he is Giorgio Germont for in Bologna. Very well known are his interpretation of and Belcore but especially Don Magnifico and Dandini in by Rossini. He performed in all prestigious opera houses around the world, from to opera companies in Vienna, Paris, London, Metropolitan of New York, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles and Chicago.
