Foote, Ingvar Ruse, and Egil Ona Institute of Marine Research P.O.Box 1870, N-5024 Bergen, Norway ABSTRACT The spawning component and part of the juvenile stock of Norwegian spring spawning herring have been wintering in a fjord system in northern Norway in recent years. Conditions for measuring the stock size have been excellent. Here, results are presented from the December 1993 and January 1994 cruises with RIV "Johan Hjort", supplemented by measurements with RIV "Michael Sars" in December 1993. Following a review of the biology, principal elements of the survey are described, namely design, acoustic measurements, and biological sampling. A variety of auxiliary studies, some ongoing, are breifly reviewed. The subjects of these are ( 1) acoustic extinction, (2) fish orientation in situ, (3) fish target strength in situ, (4) geographic differences in size distribution and associated dynamics, ( 5) herring fat content, ( 6) hydrography with respect to herring distribution, (7) inter-ship calibration of echo integrators, and (8) multi-frequency echo integration. Methods of analysis: criteria for echogram interpretation, stratification, global averaging, and geostatistical estimation of variance, are described. Results of the acoustic survey are expressed through absolute numbers for abundance, composite size distribution, and estimates of confidence associated with the degree of coverage based on geostatistics. The results are placed in the context of_other methods of assessment and prognoses.

    Institutt for arkeologi, historie, religionsvitenskap og teologi Krig og historie – Narvik 1940 Militærhistorisk rekonstruksjon og historiografisk analyse av felttoget ved Narvik, 9. april til 10. juni 1940 Kurt Henrik Dalmo Avhandling levert for graden philosophiae doctor – februar 2021 ii Krig og historie – Narvik 1940 Militærhistorisk rekonstruksjon og historiografisk analyse av felttoget ved Narvik 9. april til 10. juni 1940 Kurt Henrik Dalmo Sammendrag Avhandlingen er en militærhistorisk studie av felttoget ved Narvik, operasjonene og kamphandlingene som fant sted i perioden 9. april til 10. juni 1940. Militærhistorie og dens særegenheter er sentralt i avhandlingen. Studien er todelt. For det første er den en kildebasert rekonstruksjon av et utvalg av hendelser og tematikk. Denne rekonstruksjonen bygger på innsikter fra strategiske studier og internasjonal militærhistorie. For det andre er den en historiografisk undersøkelse av hvordan felttoget ved Narvik er blitt studert og fremstilt. Den historiografiske analysen er en innholdsanalyse av et utvalg fra den store mengden med militærhistoriske studier som er utgitt, og som omhandler Narvik 1940. Utvalget favner bredt og inkluderer faghistoriske, fagmilitære og dokumentariske studier. Studien konkluderer langs tre linjer. For det første viser den realhistoriske rekonstruksjonen at det er tematikk og innsikter som er misoppfattet, og at det fortsatt er mulig å finne nye perspektiver og tilføre ny tematikk. Den historiografiske undersøkelsen har avdekket at den eksisterende overordnede fremstillingen for det meste har vært uforandret siden de første fremstillingene etter andre verdenskrig. Det kommer stadig ut ny litteratur om hendelsen, og mye av denne er med på å gjøre fremstillingen mer nyansert. Videre har den historiografiske undersøkelsen også avdekket at det i stor grad er dokumentarister som studerer felttoget ved Narvik.
