European Parliament – Who is who - 3 - Political Groups The Members of the European Parliament sit in political groups – they are not organised by nationality, but by political affiliation. There are currently 7 political groups in the European Parliament. Each takes care of its own internal organisation by appointing a chair (or two co-chairs in the case of some groups), a bureau and a secretariat. The places assigned to Members in the Chamber are decided by political affiliation, from left to right, by agreement with the group chairmen. 25 Members are needed to form a political group, and at least one-quarter of the Member States must be represented within the group. Members may not belong to more than one political group. Some Members do not belong to any political group and are known as non-attached Members. Before every vote in plenary the political groups scrutinise the reports drawn up by the parliamentary committees and table amendments to them. The position adopted by the political group is arrived at by discussion within the group. No Member can be forced to vote in a particular way. 754 Members of the European Parliament EPP: Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) S&D: Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats ALDE: Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Greens-EFA: Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance ECR: European Conservatives and Reformists GUE-NGL: Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left EFD: Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group NI: Non-attached Members European Parliament – Who is who - 4 - EUROPEAN PEOPLES’ PARTY GROUP (EPP) President and vice presidents President National Country Joseph Daul France Vice-Presidents Ioannis Kasoulides Cyprus Manfred Weber Germany Jozsef Szajer Hungary Vito Bonsignore Italy Jan Olbrycht Poland Paulo Rangel Portugal Marian-Jean Marinescu Romania Jaime Mayor Oreja Spain Gunnar Hökmark Sweden Corien Wortmann-Kool The Netherlands PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS GROUP (S&D) President and vice presidents President National Country Johannes Swoboda Austria Vice Presidents Véronique de Keyser Belgium Libor Roucek Czech Republic Sylvie Guillaume France Bernhard Rapkay Germany Patrizia Toia Italy Rovana Plumb Romania Monika Flasikova Benova Slovakia Enrique Guerrero Salom Spain Marita Ulvskrog Sweden Stephen Hughes United Kingdom ALLIANCE OF DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS FOR EUROPE (ALDE) President and vice presidents President National Country Guy Verhofstadt Belgium Vice-President Antonyia Parvanova Bulgaria Alexander Lambsdorff Germany Marielle De Sarnez France Anneli Jäätteenmäki Finland Niccolò Rinaldi Italy Adina Ioana Vălean Romania European Parliament – Who is who - 5 - GREENS/EUROPEAN FREE ALLIANCE (GREENS/EFA) President and vice presidents President National Country Daniel Cohn-Bendit France Rebecca Harms Germany Vice Presidents Eva Lichtenberger Austria Michèle Rivasi France Reinhard Bütikofer Germany Claude Turmes Luxembourg Marije Cornelissen Netherlands Raül Romeva I Rueda Spain Jill Evans United Kingdom EUROPEAN CONSERVATIVES AND REFORMISTS (ECR) President and vice presidents President National Country Martin Callanan United Kingdom Vice-Presidents Derk Jan Eppink Belgium Jan Zahradil Czech Republic Ryszard Antoni Legutko Poland Geoffrey Van Orden UK EUROPEAN UNITED LEFT / NORDIC GREEN LEFT (GUE/NGL) President and vice presidents President National Country Lothar Bisky Germany Vice Presidents Takis Hadjigeorgiou Cyprus Miloslav Ransdorf Czech Republic Patrick Le Hyaric France Kartika Liotard Netherlands Ilda Figueiredo Portugal Mikael Gustafsson Sweden European Parliament – Who is who - 6 - EUROPE OF FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY GROUP (EFD) President and vice presidents President National Country Francesco Speroni Italy Nigel Farage United Kingdom First Vice-President Kiria Niki Tzavella Greece Second Vice-President Morten Messerschmidt Denmark Vice-Presidents Timo Soini Finland Philippe de Villiers France Bastiaan Belder Netherlands Jaroslav Paška Slovakia European Parliament – Who is who - 7 - Key Committees (out of 22) In order to do the preparatory work for Parliament’s plenary sittings, the Members are divided up among a number of specialised standing committees. 1.
