Může jeden člověk změnit svět? Touto otázkou je Bruce Wayne (CHRISTIAN BALE) naprosto pohlcen. Kdysi byl totiž svědkem toho, jak jeho rodiče v ulicích Gothamu podlehli násilné smrti – a ta noc navždy změnila jeho život. Bruce je mučen pocitem viny a hněvem. Bojuje se svými vnitřními démony, kteří jej ponoukají pomstít se. Na druhou stranu chce zachovat dobré jméno rodiny, neboť rodiče byli známí tím, že pomáhali druhým. Tento dědic impéria Wayne Industries ztratil veškeré iluze, opouští Gotham, aby se pod novou identitou vydal do světa a tam objevil prostředky, jak bojovat s nespravedlností a vnést strach do řad těch, kteří utiskují nevinné. Bruce chce pochopit mysl zločinců a tak proti bojovat účinněji. Na této nelehké cestě je mu rádcem tajemný muž jménem Ducard (LIAM NEESON), který jej zasvěcuje do tajemství tělesné a duševní disciplíny, aby měl dostatek sil bojovat se zlem, které se rozhodl potírat. Časem však zjistí, že se stal terčem mocné a nebezpečné organizace Liga stínů, kterou vede nebezpečný Ra’s al Ghul (KEN WATANABE). Bruce se po letech vrací do Gothamu a tam zjišťuje, že město tone pod vlnami zločinu a korupce.
