Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. This would follow a long line of film practice in faking amputations, inaugurated by the famous stop-motion beheading in the Edison Company’s Death of Mary Queen of Scots (aka The Execution of Mary Stuart, Thomas A. -

I also grew up listening to great Latin music and being surrounded by aunts and uncles in their Sunday best. I can now look back and use those influences in a modern way. I think that style comes from within, not just the clothing you wear. Style doesn’t come with a price tag; it comes from knowing yourself and what works for you. I have a strong belief that hard work and dedication are the keys to success and that talent rises to the top. Any challenges I come across I’ve been able to overcome because of my strong will to succeed. My advice to anyone who aspires to work on Broadway or in the fashion field is to gain as much knowledge as possible. COSTUME DESIGNER A Costume Designer creates the clothes and costumes for theatre, film, dance, concerts, television and other types of stage productions. The role of the Costume Designer in the professional theatre industry is to design garments and accessories for actors to wear in a production. In this industry the majority of designers, specialise in both set and costume design, although they often have a particular strength in one or the other. READING THE SCRIPT The first step is to read this script, which can give direction as to what the characters are wearing. The script also gives an indication through the character’s personality and behaviour. The designer should consider the time period, the location, as well as the social status of each character. The designer would then liaise with the director to determine the time period and location (as they may change this from the script) and if there is any other style or element they want to achieve. It is imperative that the costume and set design have a cohesive look. BUDGET As a designer you will need to know your budget as this has a big impact upon the design of a production. It is cheaper to produce a contemporary show, so you can op shop costumes or buy them from a retail outlet. Often actors will provide bits and pieces from their own wardrobe on smaller budget shows. Period shows are expensive as most costumes will need to be made. These costs include fabric and trims and employing people to draft patterns, cut and sew them, all of which are labour and time intensive. -

On a whim, Horwitz invited La Zar to lunch during a trip to LA, and La Zar accepted. Soon after, Horwitz wrote Alice Jacobs is Dead with La Zar in mind for the lead role of Dr. Ben Jacobs. Looking for inspiration for the titular character, Horwitz thought of one of his favorite leading ladies of genre fare, Adrienne Barbeau. “I never thought she’d do it,” says Horwitz, “But I wrote for her, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled when she actually said, ‘Yes.’” The role of George was tailored for rising TV star, Peter Cambor, who had played a cloned Jesus Christ in Horwitz’s short mockumentary, The J2 Project. “I’m incredibly lucky,” Horwitz claims, “I wrote this film for three specific actors, and I got all three to do the film. -

Rhodes Editorial Board: Kelly Basilio, Donna Campbell, Claire Perkins, Christopher Sharrett, and Yannis Tzioumakis ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of neglected American directors, from the once-famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture—its myths, values, and historical precepts. The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresent ed in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention.
