Lake Villa School Board Earns IASB School Board Governance Recognition Award

On Wednesday October 26, 2016, the Lake Villa District 41 School Board received the Illinois Association of School Boards Governance Recognition Award at the Lake Division Dinner Meet- ing of the IASB. This marked the third time District 41 has re- ceived such recognition from the IASB since 2011. The pur- pose of the honor is best described below which is quoted direct- ly from the IASB website.

The “School Board Governance Recognition” program acknowledges school boards that learn and practice effective governance behaviors as identified in IASB’s Foundational Principles of Effective Governance, through participation in and support for board development programs and events. The primary focus of this program is on full board development rather than individual board member efforts. Effective school boards understand that excellence in local school board governance requires full board commitment to obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities critical to good governance.

The board was also acknowledged for receiving this honor at the Joint Annual Conference which was in Chicago the weekend of November 18th through the 20th. There are many different factors that go into receiving such recognition, but the staff, students, families and community members of Lake Villa District 41 can be assured that the members of their school board take the role of being responsible for the education of all of the children in our community very seriously. We strive for excellence in all manners of governance and with that - we remind you all that Achieving Excellence Takes Everyone!

Help Shape Lake Villa 41’s Future!

Every organization needs a road map to advance from where it is now to where it wants to be in the future. You now have a direct opportunity to shape Lake Villa 41’s future. On Saturday, February 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. our board will be hosting a Strategic Planning Event in the board room at Palombi Middle School. This event is aimed at engaging community members, business leaders, residents, recent graduates, and staff in planning the direction of the district. It is a time for everyone’s voice to be heard. This meeting is open to the public.

The strategic plan is the driving force for the district’s actions. It guides all planning, fiscal decision-making and student achievement efforts. A good strategic plan can improve student outcomes, keep great teachers and involve the community in the business of the schools. If you are interested in joining us, please let the district know so we can be sure to have lunch for you and send you materials a week before the event. Simply call the district office at 847-356-2385 or email Dr. Lynette Zimmer at [email protected].

Our board is committed to gathering ideas from community and staff representatives to guide our school district’s planning activities. Our board believes that by working together we can strengthen our efforts to continuously improve our schools.

December 12, 2016 April 10, 2017 January 9, 2017 April 24, 2017 January 23, 2017 May 8, 2017 February 13, 2017 May 22, 2017 February 27, 2017 June 19, 2017 March 20, 2017 Palombi Goes Pink

Recently, all students and staff at Palombi Middle School proudly wore pink and participated in an annual walk to raise money and awareness in memory of beloved staff member Mary Jo Bailey who lost her own courageous battle with cancer five years ago. Students and staff formed a pink human ribbon and silently remembered those who have been impacted by the disease. Students walked through the neighborhood streets carrying posters of hope and promise for a cure.

Sadly, cancer has impacted so many lives in some way. Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. In fact, just this year over 1.7 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States alone.

Remembering Those Who Served

Lake Villa 41 students observed Veteran’s day on Friday, November 11, 2016. Students designed cards, wrote speeches, decorated lockers and bulletin boards. Thompson School hosted a Veteran’s breakfast and a recognition assembly. Veterans then visited individual classrooms. Martin School also had veterans visiting individual classrooms and grade levels throughout the day. Our students had many questions for them. Hooper first graders walked to the Lindenhurst Veterans Day Honor Service where they handed out cards and carnations thanking veterans for serving. Hooper School also had a school assembly to honor those who served. Our Palombi students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with service men and women from the Air Force.

Many thanks to our staff and parents for making this Veteran’s Day so memorable for our students. It was an excellent opportunity for our students to learn about service, citizenship and patriotism. Most importantly it was an opportunity to demonstrate our gratitude to those who have ensured our freedom. The Impact of Mindframes

Did you ever wonder what teachers do on a Teachers’ Institute Day? Elementary staff members and principals worked together to research John Hattie’s Mindframes (Hattie, 2012). They then presented information learned to their colleagues!

Mindframe, also referred to as a mindset, is a way of thinking that impacts both teaching and learning and the classroom environment as a whole. When students and teachers are equipped with the knowledge about Mindframes, or how they think about learning, the impact on learning is powerful!

Mindframe 1: Teachers/leaders believe that their fundamental task is to evaluate the effect of their teaching on students’ learning and achievements Mindframe 2: Teachers/leaders believe that success and failure in student learning is about what they, as teachers or leaders, did or did not do Mindframe 3: Teachers/leaders want to talk more about the learning than the teaching Mindframe 4: Teachers/leaders see assessment as feedback about their impact Mindframe 5: Teachers/leaders engage in dialogue not monologue Mindframe 6: Teachers/leaders enjoy the challenge and never retreat to ‘doing their best’ Mindframe 7: Teachers/leaders believe that it is their role to develop positive relationships in classrooms/staffrooms Mindframe 8: Teachers/leaders inform all about the language and learning Mindframe 9: Teachers/leaders recognize that learning is hard work Mindframe 10: Teachers/leaders collaborate

Lake Villa District 41 provides professional development based on the most current researched-based best practices. Staying current with the most recent research helps us to have the highest level of impact on your children!
