Page 166-168 Introduction to the Latest Edition of the Upland Goose Index The challenge in taking the Upland Goose index forward from 1995 to 2011 has certainly been made easier with the advances in computer technology; spreadsheets, conversion to Word documents and pdf publishing has meant the effort has mainly been limited to the sheer amount of concentration and discipline to complete the task. However, much work was put in to synchronise the indexing between the Silver Jubilee Index and the new additions to minimise the amount of similar index entries. This index also reflects the changes in the Upland Goose and the topics in the past 16 years. The improvements in computer based publishing have made the reproduction of postal history items far easier; indeed colour supplements have greatly increased this aspect of the publication. As well as postal history, shipping details and the life and times of senders or receivers of mail have been an increased focus of the changing shape of the Study Group. I have, at this stage, not indexed authors of articles, to cut down a little on the work required to complete the task and the size of the index. This could be a task for later! The Study Group owes a tremendous debt of thanks to Steve Jarvis FRPSL, who coordinates the cataloguing of society indices into the RPSL catalogue database. The Upland Goose index has been added by Steve to the RPSL catalogue, but importantly for us Steve rendered invaluable assistance in combining the two indices and creating the document you see today. Of course, this index is complete from 1970 only due to the efforts of Bill Featherstone, who created the Silver Jubilee Index and who has been a major source of help to the development of this latest version. Kim Stuckey – July 2011 An Index Entry Taking an example of Darwin Visit Anniversary issue 1982: Varieties Vol: X No. 7 p:213 ill. 3/91 This refers to an entry on page 213 of the seventh Upland Goose issue of volume ten, the index item is illustrated (shown by the designation ill.) and the publication date was March 1991. Pagination is indicated by a single page number p:213, multiple consecutive pages p:213-216 or multiple pages in an issue p:213, 217-220 as examples. Page designations include the new page numbering NIN introduced for New Issue News and WE for Weekend Supplements. The final issue in this index, in June 2011, marked the Upland Goose changing to a designation Summer rather than the month, so you will see Sum11 as the publication date for that issue, rather than 6/11. © Falkland Islands Philatelic Study Group, William Featherstone and Kim Stuckey Introduction Page | 1 How to Search in this pdf Document Of course you can use the mouse or Page Up and Page Down keys to move through the document, but the Adobe pdf document also has a powerful search facility. To access this, right click in the document and select “Search”, or from the toolbar use (Edit > Search). You will be presented with a screen that looks like this: Enter what you want to search for – in this example we have used “afterglow” as the search term. The results are shown in the search box. In this case there are six instances of an index instance with Afterglow in the wording, although there may be multiple index entries under each category. By highlighting a particular result, you will be be taken to that part of the index, to see if there are be multiple index entries underneath each instance shown.
