(By Don JT. Smith) The pound sterling and its ex change value is of such importance to Bermuda it has been requested that one of the recent articles ap pearing herein, entitled "Gold and the Pound Sterling," be elaborated upon in view of recent economic and poUtical events. As stated in the last article almost daily changes in world conditions necessitates that current opinion be as change able—and this applies to assump tions and predictions concerning the pound. It is still a firm conviction that England will not default on her December 15 War Debt payment even though the U.S.A. requires, after receipt of additional letters from England and data concerning the British capacity to pay, that the payment be made without further moratorium. The premise of this thought is that Great Britain is still a great world creditor nation and those countries in debt to her will follow her lead, and if she defaults to the United States they might default to her—and it would there fore be more costly to default than to pay. Further a default might set a precedent and lead to whole sale private and public defaults. However, a continuance of such payments would be unbearable and impossible in view of the present and imrrediate future economic conditions. There will be some amelioration as England's financial condition is sufficiently critical to warrant it. If only England were concerned the American Congress would probably extend the present moratorium. France, on the other hand, can pay without upsetting her economic equilibrium. Eng- i land was in a better financial con dition and made a war debt settle ment with the U.S.A. that has become far more burdensome than that made by France with the U.S.A. To date she has paid $1,120,000,000 more than France. Adam and Eve Moore are twins, children of an artist who remarries after the death of their mother. Adam is injured in an automobile accident which leaves him crippled. They live with their grandmother. Eve works in a brokerage house owned by Martin White, a friend of the family. White wants her to obtain from young Peter Hammill a paper releasing him from a certain business transaction. Eve meets Peter and likes him.
