2017 AWLS Educator Program by Lisa Aiello

This past summer I attended the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This is a week-long training offered to educators from all educational levels and experiences. It is designed to educate teachers about the environmental impact of hunting, fishing, and . The school provides speakers and real-world experiences to illustrate this impact. It also provides opportunities for educators to become certified Archery instructors, and to experience the use of firearms in a very supportive environment.

When leaving for my week at AWLS, I was nervous and unsure of what I was going to be doing. Being a second- grade teacher, I was unsure of how to incorporate the curriculum into my classroom, but I had nothing to worry about. After the first night, I was already on overload with the vast amount of information we were getting as well as the knowledge of all the instructors. Some of the most memorable experiences during the week would be: a speaker from Yellowstone National Park that spoke for three hours and fully engaged us the entire time, learning to shoot a pistol and rifle for the first time, hiking into the mountains to a waterfall, going to Teton National Park and the Elk Preserve as a field trip, and lastly whitewater rafting down the Snake River.

This week filled with learning invaluable information, outstanding instructors, excellent food, new connections throughout the country all took place in the incredible setting of the Rocky Mountains.

I would like to thank the Adirondack-Catskill Chapter of Safari Club International for sponsoring my trip to AWLS. This was such an incredible opportunity. I would certainly recommend it to educators. The knowledge and experience I gained was invaluable.

Adirondack - Catskill Chapter of SCI Youth Safari Wish Program

2017 Legends Ranch Youth Challenge Hunt by Bill & Lynn Mayer

Chapter member, Stanley Kocyba, was invited last August to participate in the Special Youth Challenge Hunt at Legends Ranch in Bitely, Michigan. Four additional young hunters representing North Carolina, Arizona and southern Michigan were also invited to participate. The five young hunters and their families spent four days at Legends Ranch with the goal of harvesting a trophy Whitetail . Each hunter and their family had their own private suite and enjoyed chef-prepared meals in the lodge’s main dining room. Hunters were assigned a professional guide who each morning and evening drove their young hunter to a blind located in one of the many hunting regions in the 2000 acre preserve. When not afield, the young hunters had the use of the ranch’s lodge and property to fish, kayak and play lawn games. On one particular warm afternoon, the activities included a very enthusiastic water balloon fight between hunters and their guides. There was also access to a 24/7 soda fountain complete with ice cream, candy and snack counter. The Legends staff provided a tour of their breeding facility where we learned what is required to maintain a world-class Whitetail Deer herd. We even had the opportunity to meet some of the off-spring sired by Legends’ ‘Big Money’ Whitetail buck who scored 600” the previous year and was predicted to score 625” this year. On the last day, the Legends Ranch staff held an awards program that included a breakfast with donors, music, a keynote speaker and each guide presenting their young hunter with a trophy and memento of the hunt. The five young hunters will receive a shoulder mount of their trophy at no charge with expected delivery to their homes this spring.

Since 1999, the Legends Ranch has hosted the Special Youth Challenge Hunts each summer. In 2003, Legends started their Purple Heart Hunts to honor the brave men and women who served in our armed forces. With financial support from individuals, corporations and SCI Chapters, Legends hosts these hunts at no charge to the participant and their family. The Jan/Feb issue of Safari Times contains an article about Legends and their special hunts. For more information about Legends Ranch, visit them on Facebook.
