  • Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism
Journal of Ecocriticism 4(2) July 2012 Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism Nicole Seymour (University of Arkansas at Little Rock)* Abstract I see an irreverent ecocriticism as being indebted to two major developments in and around the field: poststructuralist ecocriticism and queer ecology. Poststructuralist ecocriticism, as many readers no doubt know, can be traced to scholars such as William Cronon, Dana Phillips, and David Mazel. In his American Literary Environmentalism (2000), Mazel stresses that his work is not “about some myth of the environment, as if the environment were an ontologically stable, foundational identity we have a myth about. Rather, the environment is itself a myth, a ‘grand fable’ … a discursive construction, something whose ‘reality’ derives from the way we write, speak, and think about it” (xii). Similarly, the essays in Cronon’s 1996 collection Uncommon Ground taKe aim at simple, essentialist ideals of nature and wilderness; N. Katherine Hayles, for instance, argues that “the distinction between simulation and nature … is a crumbling diKe, springing leaks everywhere we press upon it” (411). Some of this worK may seem dated to those who engaged with poststructuralism much earlier. But, judging by the negative reactions of many ecocritics and environmentalists, it can also be viewed as quite the opposite: reactionary, overstated, heretical.1 Indeed, this worK could be described as perverse for how it breaks with its forebears, which include not just “classic” ecocriticism but also first-wave or conservationist environmentalism. My students often ask me if I think there’s hope for the future of the planet. I tell them I think it’s probably going to hell in a handbasket, and all of us with it.

  • Comptes Rendus Hunters
afrika focus — Volume 27, Nr. 1, 2014 — pp. 103-106 reviews – comptes rendus Hunters David Chancellor Schilt Publishing Amsterdam, 2012 At the beginning of the previous century, hunting safaris became a fashionable pursuit among members of the affluent classes, particularly in Britain and the USA. Al- though this type of hunting also occurred in West Africa, it was more popular in southern and especially eastern Africa which had greater numbers of large game. Moreover, the completion of the Ugandan railway in 1901 provided easier access to the interior high- lands of British East Africa (now Kenya) where there was an abundance of large game such as elephants, lions, rhinoceros and buffalo. It was in Kenya then, that the tourist trophy hunting industry proper began. Wealthy European and American visitors paid set- tler farmers to guide them on hunting safaris in the country. And soon after the Kenya example the tourist hunting industry would developed elsewhere in Africa. The British colonial government quickly turned big-game hunting into a source of revenue, charging the tourists and hunters licensing fees for permission to kill game animals. In 1909, a UKP 50 hunting license in British East Africa entitled its purchaser to kill 2 buffaloes, 2 hippos, 1 eland, 22 zebras, 6 oryxes, 4 waterbucks, 1 greater kudu, 4 lesser kudus, 10 topis, 26 hartebeests, 229 other antelope, 84 colobus monkeys and unlimited numbers of lions and leopards, because these last two, which killed livestock, were classified as 'vermin'. The white hunter served these paying customers as guide, teacher, and protector. Currently, South Africa has the largest hunting industry.

  • Skate Life: Re-Imagining White Masculinity by Emily Chivers Yochim
/A7J;(?<; technologies of the imagination new media in everyday life Ellen Seiter and Mimi Ito, Series Editors This book series showcases the best ethnographic research today on engagement with digital and convergent media. Taking up in-depth portraits of different aspects of living and growing up in a media-saturated era, the series takes an innovative approach to the genre of the ethnographic monograph. Through detailed case studies, the books explore practices at the forefront of media change through vivid description analyzed in relation to social, cultural, and historical context. New media practice is embedded in the routines, rituals, and institutions—both public and domestic—of everyday life. The books portray both average and exceptional practices but all grounded in a descriptive frame that ren- ders even exotic practices understandable. Rather than taking media content or technol- ogy as determining, the books focus on the productive dimensions of everyday media practice, particularly of children and youth. The emphasis is on how specific communities make meanings in their engagement with convergent media in the context of everyday life, focusing on how media is a site of agency rather than passivity. This ethnographic approach means that the subject matter is accessible and engaging for a curious layperson, as well as providing rich empirical material for an interdisciplinary scholarly community examining new media. Ellen Seiter is Professor of Critical Studies and Stephen K. Nenno Chair in Television Studies, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California. Her many publi- cations include The Internet Playground: Children’s Access, Entertainment, and Mis- Education; Television and New Media Audiences; and Sold Separately: Children and Parents in Consumer Culture.
