Waterloo Building Height Study, 2018 1. Introduction 1.1 This study has been undertaken to inform Lambeth’s approach to tall buildings in Waterloo as part of the Lambeth Local Plan Review, 2018. 2. Background The Waterloo Opportunity Area 2.1 The London Plan identifies Waterloo as an Opportunity Area and the objectives are outlined in the Mayor’s Waterloo Opportunity Area Planning Framework (2007) which include: ‘Development potential in the area should be maximised given Waterloo’s status as an opportunity Area and its location within the Central Activities Zone and to accord with the strategy of providing the highest levels of activity at locations with the greatest transport capacity’. 2.2 The OAPF identified two broad areas suitable for tall building – above and around the station and on the commercial spine behind the Riverside (Belvedere Road and Upper Ground) – based in part on the presence of tall buildings in these locations already. The associated illustrations generally show a cluster of tall buildings over Waterloo Station which would be delivered as part of a station redevelopment which would push the passenger concourse to ground level allowing the platforms to be extended. 2.3 The OAPF recognises the need for development to respond to this sensitive context: ‘Additionally, development potential has to be tempered against the normal impacts of development assessed by the planning system including the impact on character areas and on local and strategic views’. Howard Glover's Life and Career

See http://englishromanticopera.org/operas/Ruy_Blas/Howard_Glover_Ruy_Blas- harbinger_of_English_Romantic_Opera_demise.pdf ) This note was revised in September 2021 thanks to an email from David Gurney pointing me to Augustus William Gurney’s Memoir of Archer Thompson Gurney, which provided background on Glover’s early life as well as a summary of his character. A few other details have also been amended or added. William Howard Glover was born on 6 June 1819 in London, the second son of Julia Glover one of the best known actresses of the first half of the 19th century. Who his father was is less certain. By the end of 1817, Julia was living apart from her husband, Samuel.1 However, she was on very close terms with the American actor, playwright and author John Howard Payne, who was then living in London.2 The inclusion of Howard as Glover’s middle name and John rather than Samuel being written on the baptism record3 would strongly suggest that Payne was the father, although no definitive evidence has been found. Glover studied the violin with William Wagstaff, leader of the Lyceum Opera orchestra, and joined that band at the age of fifteen. By the age of sixteen had a dramatic scena performed at a Society of British Musicians concert.4 He continued his studies for some years in Italy, Germany and France (Illustrated Times 2 Sep. -

"There would be no more wine," Umut complained. "Umut" means Hope. Tahsin lost his temper with both of them. Tahsin is from Marash, a town famous only for its rubbery ice cream. His mother and father are illiterate and faithful. "My modern son," sighs his father on the phone with pride when told Tahsin is writing a book on a computer. Westminster Lions Cycle Ride

When the brewery was demolished for the 1951 Festival of Britain, the lion was moved to Station Approach Waterloo - British Rail had a Lion logo at this time. In 1966 the lion was moved to its present location, the red paint having been Mooring rings removed to reveal the statue is made from Coade Stone, a tough, artificial stone that several lions on this trip are made from. Mrs Coade’s factory was also on the South Bank. Alison Kelly, ‘Eleanor Coade at Stowe’, The Georgian Group Jounal, Vol. II, 1992, pp. 97–100 TEXT © THE AUTHORS 1992 ELEANOR CO ADE AT STOWE Alison Kelly towe is famous as the creation of many of the most eminent English architects, sculptors and garden designers, but one name rarely mentioned is that of Mrs SEleanor Coade.1 And yet Stowe had a range of Coade objects apparendy unrivalled at any other country house, stretching across nearly half a century from the 17 70s to at least 1814. Many of the Coade stone objects left Stowe at the sale of 1921, others have been overlooked thanks to Coade stone’s similarity to natural, fine-grained limestone, while the poor cataloguing of the 250,000 Stowe documents in the Huntington Library, San Marino, means that individual bills cannot be identified.2 Nevertheless, it is possible to give some impression of the range of Coade-stone objects at Stowe. In 1776 George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, later 1st Marquess of Buckingham, wrote to his uncle 2nd Earl Temple: “I have however seen a lion in artificial stone which I think will answer our purpose, and as the mold need not in this instance be destroyed I think we may have the pair for £100, perhaps this may be the cheapest way.”3 In fact the lions only came to £40 but the bill, dated 1778, does not specify the type of lion sent.4 The lions on the north portico, now in front of the school sports pavilion, were definitely Coade stone (Fig. I). -
