Proteau, Jasmine Shades of Red, Shades of Grey Shades of Red, Shades of Grey The Role of Cultural Context in Shaping Museums of Communism Jasmine Proteau Abstract In the post-communist era, Eastern-European museums face three key issues in their attempts to inter- pret the history of daily life under communism: feelings of nostalgia, representing both individual and collective histories, and ‘purposeful forgetting’. As socialism was experienced differently in each regional context, a sin- gle country or museum does not give a full comparative analysis to examine these issues. This work focuses on comparing three institutions across Eastern-Europe: the Museum of Communism in Prague, the GDR Museum in Berlin, and the Romanian Peasant Museum in Bucharest. Two central questions guided the approach of this work: how have these museums, and the countries they represent, portrayed, memorialized – or rejected – socialism in past and how do their approaches connect or diverge? Abstract This thesis focuses on novels, essays, films, and popular culture miscellanea representative of Central and Eastern Europe, in the attempt to explain how nostalgia developed in this area since the fall of the Iron Curtain. Post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe has undergone a major - and, for many, unsettling - historical shift, thus, perhaps not surprisingly, nostalgia for the former communist regime does not lack in popularity. Due to the region’s turbulent past cum present, millions of Eastern Europeans have migrated westward; homesickness is only one of the feelings they share. -

Veronika Pehe Socialism Remembered: Cultural Nostalgia, Retro, and the Politics of the Past in the Czech Republic, 1989-2014 UCL Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2 I, Veronika Pehe, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the political dimensions of representing history through literature, film, and television, offering a wide-ranging analysis of the cultural responses to the period of state socialism in the Czech Republic after the collapse of the former Eastern Bloc. Unlike in Germany, where the memory of the period from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin Wall has largely been discussed in terms of nostalgia, in the Czech case there is little evidence for nostalgia for either the utopian impulse of the socialist project or its everyday aspects. This research thus challenges nostalgia as one of the main paradigms for the remembrance of the socialist period in the former Eastern Bloc and demonstrates that in the Czech context, an aesthetic fascination with the past is not at odds with, but in fact reinforces an anti-communist rejection of the politics of socialism. My contention is that the object of remembrance in cultural production in the Czech Republic is not the period of state socialism itself, but rather a narrative of its overcoming through resistance and heroism. The retrospective handling of the past through cultural texts and practices hinges on a narrative of progress from the period of socialism to liberal democracy, which ultimately serves to legitimate the present political order. -

(eds) Local Memories in a Nationalizing and Globalizing World, Palgrave, Basingstoke, 2015, pp 221-243 INTRODUCTION Any radical political change produces a dramatic reformulation of national history and public memory among both elites and publics and at a variety of scales. The post-socialist states of East-Central Europe (ECE) represent one of the best contemporary examples. In the two decades since overthrowing authoritarian socialist regimes, the countries of this region have struggled with their recent past. Debates around history and memory in the post-socialist period have predominantly focused on World War II, the Holocaust and various inter-War periods of independence. However, at the heart of this issue, and the focus of this chapter, is the tension between remembering and forgetting the socialist era. At the ‘official’ level – the arena of national politics - there is generally little interest in remembering socialism. In some countries there is the possibility of officially recognizing anti-Communist resistance (such as Solidarity in Poland) or the victims of Communism, and in some cases there is recognition of the importance of some Communist figures for the nation (for example, the reburial of Imry Nagy in Hungary in 1989). However, the dominant imperative to demonstrate allegiance to global political and economic orthodoxies (and make a claim for membership of transnational organisations such as NATO or the EU) requires an emphatic repudiation of socialist rule. -

INTRODUCTION Returning to the Past 8 On a tree-lined street in Prague’s upmarket district of Vinohrady, Café Kaaba invites customers to drink a coffee in an interior decorated in ‘Brussels Style’, the late 1950s and early 1960s wave of design that followed the success of the Czechoslovak Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958. Before enter- ing, Kaaba proudly informs customers of its attitude towards the state social- ist past on its door.1 On a sticker with a crossed-out red circle, where one would often find the symbol of a dog to indicate that pets are not welcome, Kaaba features a crossed-out hammer and sickle. A second sticker displays crossed-out cherries, the symbol of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM), in a clear message that communists are not allowed inside (Figure 0.1). The socialist-era design on show in the café is to be enjoyed not for the political era that gave rise to it, but as one of the many available styles that the free market offers. Though the interior of the café is pleasant, the disclaimer on the door suggests that this should not stimulate nostalgia for how things were in the past. Instead, it turns to an alternative line of Czech history, which sees a continuity of national culture irrespective of political regimes. The message implies a hypothetical projection of the achievements of socialism – its design – without its politics: a state socialism without communists. Such a paradoxical attitude is emblematic of the Czech relationship to state socialism evident in many post-1989 cultural representations of the past and also holds a firm place in public discourse, conducted in the media by politicians, journalists and other commentators, as well as both state and "VELVET RETRO: Postsocialist Nostalgia and the Politics of Heroism in Czech Popular Culture" by Veronika Pehe. -

Many Bulgarians are looking back to the totalitarian era with increasing fondness given the ubiquitous crime and corruption that has characterized the postsocialist era. This nostalgia also informs the changing nature of Islam in Bulgaria after 1989 and the unique ways that Bulgarians understand religious identity in relation to ethnic affiliation. The author argues that the appeal of “orthodox” Islam in this postsocialist context is at least partially rooted in its discursive emphasis on social justice and the promotion of the common good. -

Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies Vol. 6, No. 2, June 2009, pp. 132Á151 When We Was Red: Good Bye Lenin! and Nostalgia for the ‘‘Everyday GDR’’ Timothy Barney In former Eastern Bloc nations, nostalgia is often seen as a dangerous pining for days under totalitarian regimes in the face of rocky transitions to democratization. This paper questions these judgments and instead proposes that the complexities of waxing nostalgic in post-communism will help us understand these transitions better. East German culture, in particular, has been at the forefront of post-communist nostalgia through its ostalgie movement. Wolfgang Becker’s film Good Bye Lenin! has been touted as the most representative example of ostalgie, and is used here as a text to examine the complex questions about looking back on everyday life during communism’s fall. Through its use of nostalgic themes, the film simultaneously embraces and derides the Western values that became an indelible part of the post-1989 landscape, and thus serves as a reminder that a distinct East German identity may still exist. Often seen as conservative and regressive, a return to the ‘‘old days’’ and traditions that never were, nostalgia is historically built on medical metaphors, implying a sickness in the mind that calls desperately for a cure. As Zala Volcic has written, ‘‘Nostalgia offers an idealized version of an unattainable past that can stunt the cultural imagination by discounting and excluding real viable options for social change.’’1 Volcic builds off the assumptions of Frederic Jameson, who wrote, at the same time the Soviet Union was collapsing, that nostalgia is an ‘‘embarrassing .. -

Disciplining Post-Communist Remembrance: from Politics of Memory to the Emergence of a Mnemonic Field Zoltán Dujisin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Zoltán Dujisin All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Disciplining Post-Communist Remembrance: from Politics of Memory to the Emergence of a Mnemonic Field Zoltán Dujisin I examine the origins of the anti-totalitarian collective memory pervading Central and Eastern Europe by tracking the genesis and development of the region’s ubiquitous and state-sponsored memory institutes. I deploy field analysis, prosopography and in-depth interviews to reveal how these hybrid institutes generate a potent anti-communist symbolic repertoire by overseeing alliances and exchanges across political, historiographic and Eurocratic fields. Memory institutes ensure this hegemony fundamentally via two mechanisms: The scientific validation of their activities by way of scholarly co-optation, and its regional legitimation through incursions into European arenas. I conclude that memory institutes are ultimately a key element of post- communist political competition, responsible for creating a durable symbolic advantage for the right’s conservative identity politics. Lenin, Marx, the sickle and hammer symbolized commu- nist strength. Household items and electronics were marvelled at as new and advanced in contrast to the Western capitalist exotic ‘Other’. In Hungary today, these symbols become Communist kitsch that can undermine former tensions and illustrate a collec- tive ambivalence towards the post-socialist condition by (1) reinterpreting time and space, (2) symbolizing the cold war ‘other’, (3) creating fantasized spaces, (4) and by representing a generational divide. Making former symbols of Communist strength ‘kitschy’ illustrates a mockery of the past, which becomes fodder for humour much like Bahktin’s discussion of inverse of power. The kitschification of Communism evokes various understandings of nostalgia in material form that underscores reinvented com- mentaries on the past as well as a response to an uncertain present and in the process neutralizes political complexity.
