Dec. 11, 2013 – Jan. 01, 2014 Thailand (Central and Northern) Species Trip List Compiled by Carlos Sanchez (HO)= Distinctive enough to be counted as heard only Summary: After having traveled through much of the tropical Americas, I really wanted to begin exploring a new region of the world. Thailand instantly came to mind as a great entry point into the vast and diverse continent of Asia, home to some of the world’s most spectacular birds from giant hornbills to ornate pheasants to garrulous laughingthrushes and dazzling pittas. I took a little over three weeks to explore the central and northern parts of this spectacular country: the tropical rainforests of Kaeng Krachen, the saltpans of Pak Thale and the montane Himalayan foothill forests near Chiang Mai. I left absolutely dazzled by what I saw. Few words can describe the joy of having your first Great Hornbill, the size of a swan, plane overhead; the thousands of shorebirds in the saltpans of Pak Thale, where I saw critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper; the tear-jerking surprise of having an Eared Pitta come to bathe at a forest pool in the late afternoon, surrounded by tail- quivering Siberian Blue Robins; or the fun of spending my birthday at Doi Lang, seeing Ultramarine Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Sunbird and more among a 100 or so species. Overall, I recorded over 430 species over the course of three weeks which is conservative relative to what is possible. Thailand was more than a birding experience for me. It was the Buddhist gong that would resonate through the villages in the early morning, the fresh and delightful cuisine produced out of a simple wok, the farmers faithfully tending to their rice paddies and the amusing frost chasers at the top of Doi Inthanon at dawn. -

Vinetz1,3,4,6* Abstract Background: Understanding the dynamics of malaria transmission in diverse endemic settings is key for designing and implementing locally adapted and sustainable control and elimination strategies. A parasitological and epide‑ miological survey was conducted in September–October 2012, as a baseline underlying a 3-year population-based longitudinal cohort study. The aim was to characterize malaria transmission patterns in two contrasting ecological rural sites in the Peruvian Amazon, Lupuna (LUP), a riverine environment, and Cahuide (CAH), associated with road- linked deforestation. Methods: After a full population census, 1941 individuals 3 years and older (829 in LUP, 1112 in CAH) were inter‑ viewed, clinically examined and had a blood sample taken for the detection of malaria parasites by microscopy and PCR. Species-specifc parasite prevalence was estimated overall and by site. Multivariate logistic regression models assessed risk factors for parasite infection by PCR, while SaTScan detected spatial clusters of PCR-positive individuals within each site. To get there by road is easy with only 9k from Puerto Maldonado city. Here the pioneer and local habitant Mr. Juan Mayta has been protecting the special clay at the river bank for three decades. His house and property have been the barrier against threats of parrot smugglers and hunters. At Collpa Cachuela hundreds of Parrots, Parakeets, and small Macaws meet for the main reason to ingest the mineral found in the clay, which is fundamental for diet and survival. The main species to see are the Blue-headed and Chestnut-fronted Macaw, more parrots such as White-bellied Parrot, Yellow-headed Amazon, Orange- cheeked Parrot, White-eyed, Dusky-headed, Cobalt-winged and Tui Parakeets are also found here. -
Brazil's Eastern Amazonia
The loud and impressive White Bellbird, one of the many highlights on the Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia 2017 tour (Eduardo Patrial) BRAZIL’S EASTERN AMAZONIA 8/16 – 26 AUGUST 2017 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL This second edition of Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia was absolutely a phenomenal trip with over five hundred species recorded (514). Some adjustments happily facilitated the logistics (internal flights) a bit and we also could explore some areas around Belem this time, providing some extra good birds to our list. Our time at Amazonia National Park was good and we managed to get most of the important targets, despite the quite low bird activity noticed along the trails when we were there. Carajas National Forest on the other hand was very busy and produced an overwhelming cast of fine birds (and a Giant Armadillo!). Caxias in the end came again as good as it gets, and this time with the novelty of visiting a new site, Campo Maior, a place that reminds the lowlands from Pantanal. On this amazing tour we had the chance to enjoy the special avifauna from two important interfluvium in the Brazilian Amazon, the Madeira – Tapajos and Xingu – Tocantins; and also the specialties from a poorly covered corner in the Northeast region at Maranhão and Piauí states. Using domestic and international hydro-meteorological forecast information, it sets danger levels and pre- defines early actions. These actions are activated when a forecast exceeds a danger level in the intervention area (for example, a river flow that has caused flooding in the past). Ac- tions can be implemented before the disaster occurs and resilience is strengthened, both at institutional and community level. -

Duncan, an avowed antbird fanatic, contacted me after having come to the conclusion that he could no longer ignore the Rio Roosevelt given the recent batch of antbird splits and new taxa coming from the Madeira – Tapajós interfluvium. We had touched on the subject during his previous trips in Brazil, having also toyed with the idea of including an expedition-style extension to search for Brazil's biggest mega when it comes to antbirds – the Rondônia Bushbird. After some back and forth in the first two months of the following year, an e-mail came through from Duncan which ended thusly: “statement of the bleedin’ obvious: I would SERIOUSLY like to see the Bushbird.” At which point the game was on, so to speak. We began to organize an itinerary for the Rio Roosevelt with a dedicated expedition for Rondonia Bushbird. By mid-year things were coming together for a September trip, but in August we were de-railed by a minor health problem and two participants being forced to back out at the last minute. With a bushbird in the balance, we weren't about to call the whole thing off, and thus a new itinerary sans Roosevelt was hatched for 2015, an itinerary which called for about a week in the Tabajara area on the southern border of the Campos Amazônicos National Park, followed by a few days on the west bank of the rio Madeira to go for a couple of Duncan's targets in that area. -

Box 1316 Weldon, CA, 93283 (760) 378-2402 March 2006 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Concern for the southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) has stimulated increased research, management, and conservation of the species on its North American breeding grounds. To supplement current knowledge of breeding populations, recent studies in Latin America (Koronkiewicz et al. 1998; Koronkiewicz and Whitfield 1999; Koronkiewicz and Sogge 2000; Lynn and Whitfield 2000, 2002; Nishida and Whitfield 2003, 2004) have focused on wintering ecology. We extended these efforts by surveying for willow flycatchers from 8–24 December, 2004 in northern Mexico and 18–28 January, 2005 in Ecuador. Our goals were to identify territories occupied by wintering willow flycatchers, describe habitat in occupied areas, collect blood and feather samples, collect colorimeter readings, relocate banded individuals, and identify threats to willow flycatcher populations on the wintering grounds. We spent a total of 103.7 survey hours at 30 survey sites in northern Mexico and Ecuador. In northern Mexico, we surveyed four new locations and revisited three locations from our initial 2002 surveys of Mexico. We detected a minimum of 52 willow flycatchers (Sinaloa = 2, Nayarit = 50). In Mexico, occupied habitat was found along the Pacific coast lowlands. In Ecuador, we revisited locations that had been surveyed annually since 2003 (except Sani, which was surveyed 2004–2005) and found high willow flycatcher densities at a new location along the Río Coca. -

The rhythm of life in the Amazon is largely dictated by water; the levels of the rivers and amount of rainfall influence everything. And rain was a theme on this particular tour! We ran into an unexpected amount of rainfall during our first days that cost us some valuable birding time (and species) in terra firme forest. On the positive side, however, it also meant that ant swarms were more active, and we ended up getting some remarkable views of scarce obligate ant-followers that we miss most years, such as White-plumed Antbird and Rufous-throated Antbird. The heavy rains prevented us from reaching the tower on our way to Presidente Figueiredo, but we bounced back from it by visiting a nearby road and pulling in some fabulous canopy flocks and great birds including the usually scarce Dotted Tanager as well as the incredibly handsome Paradise Tanager. Then, thanks largely Bret Whitney's help, we were able to secure a couple of 4x4 vehicles and visit the tower instead on our way back to Manaus. At Presidente Figueiredo our updated itinerary meant we were staying in a lodge instead of the hammock camp previously used, and so we were able to take advantage of a Guianan Cock-of-the-rock lek just a few minutes from the lodge and even had them showing up around the dining area, where they fed in palm trees along with toucans and aracaris. -

AMAZON FACT SHEET AMAZON FACT SHEET INTRODUCTION The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest spanning 9 different countries in South America - Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and of course Brazil which contains 60% of the Amazon Rainforest. The Rainforest covers over 75% of the Amazon Basin, with an area of 5.5 million sq kms. It comprises the largest and most bio diverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world. It is dissected by hundreds of rivers, the most notable being the mighty Amazon. The river towns of Manaus and Belem in Brazil and Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado in Peru have 19th century architecture dating back to the days of the rubber boom. There are over 1,400 species of mammals found in the Amazon, the larger mammals including the jaguar, ocelot, capybara and tapir. The Basin is inhabited by more than 1,500 species of birds including toucans, hummingbirds, macaws and other parrots. Reptiles found here include the anaconda and boa constrictor. The area is also home to over 1,000 species of amphibians and 2,200 species of fish including the red-bellied piranha. The Amazon Basin also contains thousands of plant species with tropical fruit trees such as Brazil nut, cocoa and rubber trees as well as orchids and the kapok tree, the largest tree of the Amazon that can grow to a height of 60 metres. AMAZON FACT SHEET CLIMATE The Amazon Rainforest has a tropical equatorial climate, being hot and humid throughout the year with an annual average temperature of 27°C.
