Winthrop Basketball ver the past 15 years the Winthrop men’s basketball program has been Osynonymous with winning championships and claiming victories over some of the nation’s elite schools. Over that period, the Eagles have nine Big South Conference championships, captured the Marquette Pepsi Blue and Gold Classic, the oldest continuing tournament in the country, along with nine NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by the 2007 first-round victory over Notre Dame. No other Big South Conference school and few programs across the country can boast of the same success that Winthrop basketball has enjoyed since 1999. 2010-11 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Open Big South Championship vs. #5 Winthrop VMI Hosts Tournament Game For Second Time in Three Seasons After winning its final five conference games, VMI basketball has earned its second first round Big South Championship home game in the past three seasons and will host #5 seed Winthrop Tuesday night. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on the Big South Network at www.bigsouthsports.com. An audio broadcast and live stats will also be available via vmikeydets.com. No. 4 VMI (17-112, 10-88 BSC) vs. No. 5 Winthrop (13-116, 9-99 BSC) In the midst of their Big South streak, VMI held four straight conference opponents to 74 points or less, winning each of those contests. In fact, since surrendering 99 points in a loss to Coastal Carolina on Feb. 5, the Keydets Tuesday, March 1, 7 p.m. have allowed just 71.2 points per game, 11 points under their season average. For the year, VMI is 12-1 when Cameron Hall holding its opponents under 80 points. Lexington, Va. That defensive resurgence has been keyed by freshman center D.J. 2007-08 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets On Three-Game Winning Streak Entering Game at Richmond VMI Looks to Improve to 4-0 Against In-State Opponents VMI improved its record to 6-5 with a 83-72 victory at William & Mary on Thursday, Dec. 20. Senior forward Reggie Williams scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds while freshman guard Austin Kenon nailed seven 3- point shots on his way to a career-high 25 points in the contest, as VMI secured its first road win of the year. The Keydets won their third straight and ended a four-game losing streak to the Tribe dating back to 1992. Meanwhile, VMI (6-55) vs. VMI also moved to 2-0 against Colonial Athletic Association foes this season and it marked the first time the Keydets RIchmond (5-66) had defeated two CAA teams in the same season since 1986-87. Sunday, Dec. 30; 6 p.m. With his 27 points against William & Mary, senior forward Reggie Williams moved into second on the Big South Robins Center career scoring list, surpassing Coastal Carolina’s Tony Dunkin.
