  • LCA Introduction
The Hambleton and Howardian Hills CAN DO (Cultural and Natural Development Opportunity) Partnership The CAN DO Partnership is based around a common vision and shared aims to develop: An area of landscape, cultural heritage and biodiversity excellence benefiting the economic and social well-being of the communities who live within it. The organisations and agencies which make up the partnership have defined a geographical area which covers the south-west corner of the North York Moors National Park and the northern part of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The individual organisations recognise that by working together resources can be used more effectively, achieving greater value overall. The agencies involved in the CAN DO Partnership are – the North York Moors National Park Authority, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, English Heritage, Natural England, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency, Framework for Change, Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, Ryedale District Council and Hambleton District Council. The area was selected because of its natural and cultural heritage diversity which includes the highest concentration of ancient woodland in the region, a nationally important concentration of veteran trees, a range of other semi-natural habitats including some of the most biologically rich sites on Jurassic Limestone in the county, designed landscapes, nationally important ecclesiastical sites and a significant concentration of archaeological remains from the Neolithic to modern times. However, the area has experienced the loss of many landscape character features over the last fifty years including the conversion of land from moorland to arable and the extensive planting of conifers on ancient woodland sites.

  • Heritage at Risk Register
CASTLE HOWARD MAUSOLEUM Castle Howard Estate, Ryedale, North Yorkshire The Mausoleum, by Hawksmoor, 1729-42, and modelled on the tomb of Metella, is a major feature of the Howardian Hills. Situated on a bluff east of Castle Howard. The columns were repaired with a grant in the 1980s. The entablature and bastions continue to decay. Much of the damage is due to rusting cramps. The staircase balustrade is collapsing. 304 HERITAGE AT RISK YORKSHIRE & THE HUMBER 305 Y&H HERITAGE AT RISK 2008 Of the 176 entries on the baseline 1999 Yorkshire and the Humber buildings at risk register, 91(52%) have now been removed. Although this is 6% higher than the regional average for 2008, our rate of progress is slowing. Of the five entries removed this year, only one was on the 1999 register. This is because the core of buildings remaining from the 1999 register are either scheduled monuments with no obvious use, or buildings with a problematic future that require a strategic re-think to provide a viable solution. Despite these problems, we are continuing to work with owners, local authorities, trusts and other funding bodies to try to secure the long-term future of these buildings and structures. Just over half (52%) of the regional grants budget (almost £500,000) was offered to eleven buildings at risk in the last financial year. There are four new entries this year: in North Yorkshire, St Leonard’s Church at Sand Hutton, and in West Yorkshire, Hopton Congregational Church in Mirfield,Westwood Mills at Linthwaite, and Stank Hall near Leeds. This gives a total of 122 Grade I and II* listed buildings and scheduled monuments at risk entries on the Yorkshire and the Humber register.

  • Prospectus 2017/18
North and South Cowton Community Primary School Prospectus 2017/18 Enjoy School – Be Ready for Life North And South Cowton Community Primary School Prospectus 2011/12 Welcome to our school prospectus. My name is Trevor Watson and I am Executive Headteacher of North and South Cowton Community Primary School. This is my first year in post where I took over from Mr Briggs who had been Head for 6 years. The school is a happy and successful school, which was judged as good by Ofsted in March 2017. We have two buildings in the village of North Cowton, which accommodate our two classes; one infant class, catering for children from Early Years Foundation Stage up to year 2, and one junior class for years 3 to 6. However, the school is not constrained by these physical boundaries and truly extends into the heart of the community. We have a dedicated and talented team of staff, volunteers and governors, who work hard to ensure that all our children develop to their full social, sporting and academic potential. We are an inclusive school, which recognises and values the different talents and abilities of everyone who is part of our community. We strive to ensure that our children are healthy and we have a reputation for sporting success. As a small school, all our children have the chance to participate in a range of team sports; the children learn to support each other and respect each others strengths. This maturity and team work has consistently resulted in winning performances, and contributes significantly to the children’s personal and social development.
