WORLD SQUASH DAY: SQUASH COURTS A NEW GEN- ERATION OF FEMALE PLAYERS

Squash is all set to attract a new generation of female players thanks to a worldwide day of action and innovation backed by the Squash and Racketball Association and the World Squash Federation. World Squash Day takes place on November 5 th and events are taking place all over the globe as clubs open their doors to welcome female members to the sport. “Squash is ideal for the modern female,” said World Squash Federation Chief Executive Andrew Shelley. “Squash is a great calorie-burner and is rated the best sport for fitness in a number of surveys. “We hope that the many newcomers to the sport who support World Squash Day will enjoy their experience on court and realise the many benefits squash has to offer. “Squash is a superb sport for fitness and agility. It is ideal for the recreational player and also for those who seek more de- manding competition. “World Squash Day coincides with the World Open in The Netherlands and this unique day provides an ideal link be- tween the game’s leading players and a programme of grass- roots activity designed to increase female participation.” World Squash Day founder Alan Thatcher will be hosting a var- ied programme at The Mote Squash Club in Maidstone, the county town of Kent. Thatcher, who is president of the Kent SRA, said: “We are building on a major county-wide development programme which has already introduced squash to hundreds of school children. Our aim is to attract enough women players to form new teams and new female competitions. “We are encouraging all the major clubs in Kent to launch new leagues based at individual venues. We plan to create a new framework for the way the game is played by females and or- ganise events that work around their busy work and home schedules, rather than continue to impose old-fashioned struc- tures that no longer seem to work. “Having said that, the accent of all the Kent events taking place on World Squash Day will be on fun, fitness and friendship. We hope those themes will be echoed throughout the world.”

TECNIFIBRE BRITISH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

27-30 October – Manchester

Manchester will once again play host to the British Junior Championships at the end of October. This prestigious event is now well established as the biggest domestic junior tournament on the circuit, complimenting the Tecnifibre British Junior Open. This weekend will see the best players in Britain fight it out for a coveted National title.

Declan James (Nottinghamshire) heads the seeding for the Boys Under 19 and will be looking to capture his first British title, however he will come up against tough opposition with Adam Auckland (Lincolnshire) , Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) and James Earles (Yorkshire) also in the hunt. (Cheshire) the world number 40 has been making a real impression on the Wispa senior tour and comes into the event as red hot favourite. Last season Whitlock had a clean sweep in the juniors claiming the U17 British Junior Championship Title, the U17 British Junior Open and the U19 English Championship, she will be hoping to continue that run by adding the U19 crown to her impressive collection. Katie Smith (Yorkshire) , Hannah Davies (Wales) and Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) make up the rest of the top 4 seeds.

Wales have a strong presence as former British Champions Fiona Murphy (Wales) and Elin Harlow (Wales) return, Murphy as the top seed in the Girls Under 17 category, her main challenge is likely to come from Anna Kimberley (Gloucestershire) who is currently the English number 1. Harlow tops the seeds in the Girls Under 15’s, with Georgina Kennedy (Kent) her main threat for the title. Richie Fallows (Essex) will be looking to capture the Boys Under 17 title but will face stiff competition from Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) , Lyell Fuller (Devon) and Peter Joyce (Avon) who are all looking for their first British title.

Yorkshire looks a likely destination for the Boys Under 15’s title as top two seeds James Peach (Yorkshire) and Jack Cooper (Yorkshire) look favourites to meet at the final, Ben Windle (Surrey) and Emyr Evans (Wales) will look to stop that from happening. The Boys Under 13 will see Curtis Malik (Sussex) and Kyle Finch (Hampshire) seeded to meet in the final as are Elise Lazarus (Essex) and Amy Jones (Buckinghamshire) who hold the top two positions in the Girls Under 13.

The National Squash Centre and The Northern Squash Club will see 320 players competing from 27- 30 October for four days of fiercely competitive squash. All qualifying rounds will be played at the Na- tional Squash Centre on Thursday 27 October. Main draws will start at 9am on Friday 28 with the Boys and Girls Under 13/15 being played in full at the Northern Squash Club in Didsbury while the Boys and Girls Under 17/19 play at the National Squash Centre. Finals are scheduled for Sunday af- ternoon, all spectators wishing to watch the best junior players in the country are invited to attend the event free of charge.

Farnham Leisure Centre Squash Launch

England Squash & Racketball has been supporting DC Leisure to revive the squash club at Farnham Leisure Centre after their recent refurbishment. DC Leisure staff member Paul Kelly, a keen squash player, has been leading the way with this. He has been training up to become a coach. At the beginning of September Paul held a club tournament. The winner of this was Jeremy Cave and runner up was Richard Bell. This was followed a few weeks later by a league launch night where Welsh In- ternational Paul Johnson came along to play the Club Champion (or runner up, as Jeremy got stuck somewhere up North). Richard Bell fought hard against Paul and even tried the points challenge afterwards too, where several other club members challenged Paul, including Paul Kelly, to see who could get the most points and win the prize of a racket. This challenge was won by Lee Gardiner. The league now has 38 players in its first month and hoping to grow. Once Paul Kelly is qualified he is go- ing to start up some junior coaching and there is talk of entering a team into the county leagues.

Team Chichester takes the sparkle out of Exeter Diamonds Team Chichester –v- Exeter Diamonds – Round 2 This week Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club’s Premier Squash League team played its first home match of the 2011/2012 season. The Chichester squad played the Exeter Diamonds squad which fielded new signing and for- mer Team Chichester stalwart for fifteen years, Tim Vail. First on the glass-back, championship court Vail was in inspired form against Chichester’s Max Lee (Hong Kong) and World No.38. Vail attacked from the start and although Lee stretched him from front to back and side to side it was his own error count which was higher. Vail steadily built up a 0.2 lead. Lee, however, fought back and pegged back the 3 rd with his opponent letting it go towards the end. Vail made a big push in the 4 th and Lee hit the tin far too often. Vail was always in control and ran out a 1.3 winner. 0.1. On the adjacent court Chichester’s Lauren Briggs (World No.37) was slow out of the blocks and soon found her- self 0.1 down and then after a closer contested second was 0.2 down. Briggs then upped the pace, got into her stride and took control of the match to win the next 3 games without any trouble. 1.all Following on both courts, 2 fantastic 5-game matches were about to commence. Alex Ingham (former National junior number one) was making his debut for Chichester; he played James Snell, a former Devon County Cham- pion with a highest world ranking of 89. The match ebbed and flowed, with good driving and delicate drop shots from both. ngham dropped the first 11/13 but came back strongly in the next 2 to build a 2.1 lead. Snell fought hard in the 4 th to win it 5/11 and bring it back to 2.all and into a decider. Although never behind in the 5 th the final score line was always in doubt before Ingham clinched it for Chichester 11/8. On the glass-back Robbie Temple (world no.64) played superbly for Team Chichester to build a 2.0 lead. His op- ponent, Campbell Grayson, comfortably took the third game 1/11 and continued to haul himself back into the match by winning the fourth 9/11. In the 5 th Temple forged ahead and repeated the form he displayed in the first 2 games. He took the match 11/4, on his 2 nd match ball, to give team Chichester an unassailable 3.1. lead. In the dead rubber the new Chichester top string, Nafiizwan Adnan [Malaysia and World 39] played the very much in form [AUS] and world no.19. Boswell has recently beaten David Palmer and Cameron Pilley, the top 2 Australian players, to reach the semi-finals of the . Boswell dominated the whole match although Adnan battled well and entertained the crowd during all 3 games but, the result was never in doubt. Team Chichester wins 3.2 to kick-start its winning campaign. Next match is 8 November away to current champi- ons Surrey H&R Club; a difficult task lays ahead but nonetheless a very good win this week. Mike Phillips Team Chichester Manager

CANARY WHARF SQUASH CLASSIC 2012

CANARY WHARF CLASSIC SQUASH: THE HOTTEST TICKETS IN TOWN

TICKETS are selling quickly for the 2012 Canary Wharf Classic. London’s premier squash tournament takes place from March 19-23 and, after two sell-out years, spectators are clearly determined to bag the prime seats as soon as possible for this PSA Interna- tional 50 event.

Tournament promoter , the former world champion, is not surprised by the response. Nicol, a co-director of Eventis Sports Marketing, said: “This is our ninth year of working in partnership with the Canary Wharf Group to bring the world’s best players to the magnificent East Wintergarden venue.

“It’s every promoter’s dream to sell every ticket for every day of the tournament, and we would be de- lighted to see that happen for a third year running.” World champion Nick Matthew will be returning to London to bid for a third consecutive title after win- ning the last two finals against French ace Gregory Gaultier in 2010 and England team-mate Peter Barker earlier this year.

Nicol added: “Nick has been a very popular champion these past two years and he has thoroughly deserved his success after battling back to fitness after a serious shoulder injury. “He enjoys an immense rivalry at the top of the rankings with ’s . These guys play fast, attacking squash non-stop throughout every match and the entertainment value of top-level squash seems to improve with each new era. “As much as I love the game I’m glad I don’t have to play these guys every week, as the pace of the modern game seems to go up a notch each year!” Nicol was in Paderborn, Germany, recently to see England finish runners-up to Egypt in the Men’s World Team Championships.

He added: “It was a superb event and, like Canary Wharf, attracted sell-out crowds. The England boys were bitterly disappointed to lose in the final and that will certainly fire them up to perform well this season, and especially in a major tournament on home soil.” As well as world No.1 Matthew, Nicol is looking forward to welcoming back , a three- time winner at Canary Wharf, Londoners Barker and Adrian Grant, and Essex’s Daryl Selby. “England is doing so well with all those guys in the world top 16, and I am sure there will be plenty of home support for the boys at Canary Wharf,” Nicol added.

Tickets for the 2012 Canary Wharf Classic cost from £15 and are available from Ticketmaster. The fabulous East Wintergarden offers superb opportunities for corporate hospitality, with the gallery restaurant offering “the best view of squash anywhere in the world” according to Nicol. The qualifying competition takes place at Wimbledon Racquets and Fitness Club on March 17-18 with four winners joining the top 12 seeds in the main draw action on the glass court at Canary Wharf.
