World Squash Day takes place on November 5 th and events are taking place all over the globe as clubs open their doors to welcome female members to the sport. “Squash is ideal for the modern female,” said World Squash Federation Chief Executive Andrew Shelley. “Squash is a great calorie-burner and is rated the best sport for fitness in a number of surveys. “We hope that the many newcomers to the sport who support World Squash Day will enjoy their experience on court and realise the many benefits squash has to offer. “Squash is a superb sport for fitness and agility. It is ideal for the recreational player and also for those who seek more de- manding competition. “World Squash Day coincides with the World Open in The Netherlands and this unique day provides an ideal link be- tween the game’s leading players and a programme of grass- roots activity designed to increase female participation.” World Squash Day founder Alan Thatcher will be hosting a var- ied programme at The Mote Squash Club in Maidstone, the county town of Kent. Thatcher, who is president of the Kent SRA, said: “We are building on a major county-wide development programme which has already introduced squash to hundreds of school children. Our aim is to attract enough women players to form new teams and new female competitions. “We are encouraging all the major clubs in Kent to launch new leagues based at individual venues. We plan to create a new framework for the way the game is played by females and or- ganise events that work around their busy work and home schedules, rather than continue to impose old-fashioned struc- tures that no longer seem to work. “Having said that, the accent of all the Kent events taking place on World Squash Day will be on fun, fitness and friendship. We hope those themes will be echoed throughout the world.” Less than 2 weeks to go! Please encourage your club to run an event and upload news of any events to the World Squash Day website so that everyone can see what's happening! 5 Please use this poster at your club to advertise your events! 6 Are you a squash, badminton, tennis coach or other sports coach looking to expand your business? This prestigious event is now well established as the biggest domestic junior tournament on the circuit, complimenting the Tecnifibre British Junior Open. This weekend will see the best players in Britain fight it out for a coveted National title. Declan James (Nottinghamshire) heads the seeding for the Boys Under 19 and will be looking to capture his first British title, however he will come up against tough opposition with Adam Auckland (Lincolnshire) , Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) and James Earles (Yorkshire) also in the hunt. Emily Whitlock (Cheshire) the world number 40 has been making a real impression on the Wispa senior tour and comes into the event as red hot favourite. Last season Whitlock had a clean sweep in the juniors claiming the U17 British Junior Championship Title, the U17 British Junior Open and the U19 English Championship, she will be hoping to continue that run by adding the U19 crown to her impressive collection. Katie Smith (Yorkshire) , Hannah Davies (Wales) and Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) make up the rest of the top 4 seeds. Wales have a strong presence as former British Champions Fiona Murphy (Wales) and Elin Harlow (Wales) return, Murphy as the top seed in the Girls Under 17 category, her main challenge is likely to come from Anna Kimberley (Gloucestershire) who is currently the English number 1. Harlow tops the seeds in the Girls Under 15’s, with Georgina Kennedy (Kent) her main threat for the title. Richie Fallows (Essex) will be looking to capture the Boys Under 17 title but will face stiff competition from Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) , Lyell Fuller (Devon) and Peter Joyce (Avon) who are all looking for their first British title. Yorkshire looks a likely destination for the Boys Under 15’s title as top two seeds James Peach (Yorkshire) and Jack Cooper (Yorkshire) look favourites to meet at the final, Ben Windle (Surrey) and Emyr Evans (Wales) will look to stop that from happening. The Boys Under 13 will see Curtis Malik (Sussex) and Kyle Finch (Hampshire) seeded to meet in the final as are Elise Lazarus (Essex) and Amy Jones (Buckinghamshire) who hold the top two positions in the Girls Under 13. The National Squash Centre and The Northern Squash Club will see 320 players competing from 27- 30 October for four days of fiercely competitive squash. All qualifying rounds will be played at the Na- tional Squash Centre on Thursday 27 October. Main draws will start at 9am on Friday 28 with the Boys and Girls Under 13/15 being played in full at the Northern Squash Club in Didsbury while the Boys and Girls Under 17/19 play at the National Squash Centre. Finals are scheduled for Sunday af- ternoon, all spectators wishing to watch the best junior players in the country are invited to attend the event free of charge. 8 Farnham Leisure Centre Squash Launch England Squash & Racketball has been supporting DC Leisure to revive the squash club at Farnham Leisure Centre after their recent refurbishment.
