The Blue Print Fall/Winter 2009

Faculty Advisor: Fairview Lake by Julia Axtell Shelley Hartz This year, the sixth graders enjoyed the Student Editor: usual trip to Fairview Lake. Fairview Lake is a Alyssa Baum camping site in northern New Jersey. The site (Form II) is located on a beautiful lake called Fairview Lake. It is also a part of the Appalachian Grade 6 Writers: Mountain Trail, so the sixth graders enjoyed a Julia Axtell beautiful hike up a mountain. We learned that the Native Americans had their own theory while other religions and countries believed in different star constellations.

Philadelphia Trip by Victoria Castillo

On October 1, 2009, Pingry's Form I piled onto buses. The bags they brought were packed for their overnight stay and being placed into the cargo unit of the bus. Their destination was Philadelphia. The Bartsch, Boyer, Gerard, and Kelleher advisories loaded onto the first bus and the Mila, Murray, Rahter, and Roxbury advisories went onto the second bus. Anticipation ran through the entire grade and soon they were off. On the one and a half hour bus ride, the students read books, listened to music, watched the scenery, talked, and slept. When the groups entered the city of Philadelphia, everyone turned to the windows watch a presentation called “Freedom Rising.” and talked and stared all at once. When the Ducks Tour was finished, the seventh grade went to the Holiday Inn. There they unpacked their belongings, put on warm clothes, and gave any medicine to the nurse. Then, they were off to the Philly's game. The game was long and drawn out. With students constantly coming and going for food and souvenirs, many disregarded the game. After one inning, Filipino girls and boys came out and danced the national dance for Philippine Appreciation Day. The Pingry seventh graders left at the fifth inning around ten o'clock pm. Back at the hotel, everybody got their toiletries in order, “lights out” was called, and people stayed up until they wanted to. Some unnamed seventh graders even stayed up all hours.

The next day a wakeup call roused At the Liberty Bell, students were everyone, and soon everyone was up and pressed for time, so skipping the exhibits, the packing their belongings. Student Government Update by Neeraj Shekhar

Student Government is off to a great start this year. Starting on November 18, we had a spirit week that culminated in our first Pingry Middle School Pep Rally of the year. The spirit week started on Wednesday with Sports Day. On Thursday we had Beach Day. Mr. Cox approved khaki shorts for Beach Day! Friday’s spirit was Pajama Day. We asked that students please refrained from wearing pants with writing on the behind. Monday was Pingry Day, so everyone came out in his or her best Pingry spirit wear! To cap off the great week, we had Color Day. All students showed their grade spirit by wearing their grade color. Form II wore blue, Form I wore , Grade 6 wore yellow, and the faculty wore green. On Tuesday we also had our Pep Rally. There was lots of great entertainment and everyone enjoyed it very much.

Planet Pingry by Mikaela Lewis

Friday, November 6 th was the first Middle School Dance of the year, open to Form I and II students. The theme was outer space, which was a great theme thought up by the Middle School Student Government. Many dressed up in their space outfits and alien masks, while others came in their casual dance outfits. The Commons was decorated with planets and stars and the DJ played the latest music. Like any other dance, there were groups that danced all night and others that didn’t dance at all. People who did dance had a great time dancing to traditional songs, like the Cotton Eye Joe, and dancing to newer songs, like Tik Tok or Stanky Legg. One popular place was Mr. Vehslage’s room: the drink and cookie room. How could anyone resist cookies? Some Pingry students brought friends from outside of school, which made the dance even better. The teacher chaperones were very helpful in Photos courtesy keeping everything under control, and we thank them of Alyssa Baum very much for giving up their Friday night for us. Most people had fun at the dance, but some did not make the most of it. I cannot wait to see how the next dance turns out! Community Service

The Food Bank by Keileh Atulomah

The Pingry Middle School went to the Food Bank on Friday, October 30. We worked there for 2 hours and did a lot of work. We were divided up into groups and assigned different jobs.

One group had to do many different jobs, and this happened to be my group. We had to stick labels to pieces of cardboard and make boxes out of the cardboard. We also had to put labels on plastic bags. We scooped green and orange pasta into the bags, and tied them up. Then, to finish, we put six bags of pasta into one box. Of course, one person wouldn't do all the jobs; we all worked together.

Another group had to put cereal and pasta into boxes, another sorted out toiletries, and another sorted out clothing, but I'm sure there were other groups doing many other jobs.

We helped a lot of people on our trip to the Food Bank, and I have to admit, Matheny School by Rachel Davis it was fun! On Friday, October 30, the Middle School 8 th grade Girls’ Chorus visited the Matheny School. Matheny is a school and place to live for those with certain physical and mental ailments and disabilities. The Chorus sang Halloween songs to Christmas tunes, for example “Rufus JackOLantern” to the tune of “Frosty the Snowman” and the “Twelve Days of Halloween.” While the rest of the Middle School was helping at the Food Bank, the Girls’ Chorus sang for about an hour outside Matheny’s haunted house. After we sang, we went through the haunted house. Surprisingly, it was scary! We went in the haunted house in groups of five, and all of us were holding on to each other. Some of us were even screaming. Nothing made the Girls’ Chorus happier than seeing the smiles on the children’s faces. Arts

Middle School Cross Country by Camille Vanasse

The Middle School Girls Cross Country team had an amazing season. They were undefeated in meets with only two or three schools and came in third in the Ed Scott Invitational. This fall, the Ed Scott Invitational consisted of sixteen schools. The top seven runners from each team competed for their schools, which made it a very competitive race. There were 112 girls in the race and all of our runners finished in the top 20. The top seven girls on the Cross Country Team also participated in The Pumpkin Run at Gill St. Bernards and the team placed in first. Overall the season was great and very rewarding.
