Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary. Aloha Kaeo, former supervisor of the city’s lifeguard services, died Monday in Honolulu. He was 86. Kaeo was born and raised in Waikiki and like most youngsters, he spent all of his spare time in the water. The pure Hawaiian learned to swim at a young age when someone threw him off a bridge. A 1930 graduate of McKinley High School, Kaeo worked as a crane operator. In 1956, he was hired as a lifeguard by Bill Smith, an Olympic gold medalist who headed the department In 1967, Kaeo was promoted to supervisor of the lifeguards, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. During his tenure, Kaeo was credited with developing a strict training regiment for lifeguards. He also hired the city’s first female lifeguard. Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services administrator Ralph Goto said that there was no doubt who was the boss when Kaeo was in charge.
