PUTTING SHOULDER PADS ON SCHLECK: HOW THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL CYCLING COULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH A MORE AMERICAN STRUCTURE Chris Deubert* INTRODUCTION t was announced in August 2010 that three-time Tour de France I winner Alberto Contador, less than a week after his latest victory, was leaving his Kazakhstan-based team, Astana, at the end of the sea- son.1 Contador reportedly rejected a two-year, nearly $13 million deal from Astana,2 instead choosing to sign with Bjarne Riis’ Danish-based Saxo Bank-SunGard team for a reported two years and $20 million.3 The move was particularly notable because Contador was essentially replac- ing rider Andy Schleck, who announced that at the end of the 2010 sea- son he would be leaving Riis’ squad to form a team based in his native Luxembourg.4 Schleck finished second to Contador in both the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France, including a controversial thirty-nine second victo- 5 ry in 2010. -

THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..the missing links………………and more(useless information). In this historic year of the 2014 TdF Grand Depart taking place right here in the North of England, The Tootler has collected together a few interesting facts associating our great club with the worlds greatest bike race and some of the heroic riders who make the connection; roughly, possibly.Admittedly they are loose connections but there are worse things than being loosely connected so taking the advice of Ernest Hemingway to “write drunk, edit sober”, in this late night conceived and rambling compilation Tootler will attempt to connect Houghton CC, the late great Chis, the Vaux Grand Prix road race and the Tour de France. Firstly some relevant background information. For the benefit of recent members (and those under sixty five) the great Chis was a Houghton grammar school boy called Peter Chisman who joined the club in 1954 and who, apart from a wonderful career as an amateur and a professional also inspired hundreds of kids to take up bike racing. In the north east, at least in bike racing terms, the ninteen sixties and seventies were the belle epoque, the beautiful era, a golden time. Friday night at the clubrooms would be packed. There was a separate time trial and road racing notice board. The time trialling notices, race details and start times would be displayed on the RTTC notice board; and the BCF notice board would detail all road races, entrants, times, meeting points etc for those members racing on the road that weekend. -

À chacun sa performance : les témoignages du champion cycliste Bernard Hinault et d’Hubert Crespel, kinésithérapeute Résumé Ses performances, Bernard Hinault les attribue à ses aptitudes physiques, son goût de la compétition et son « moral de tueur » qui lui faisait oublier la douleur. Mais le quintuple champion du Tour de France n’oublie qu’il doit aussi ses victoires à son équipe. « Pas de performance sans objectif, ni sans motivation. » Bâti pour les sports d’endurance, avouant priser moyennement l’entraînement, car « courir est plus passionnant que s’entraîner », Bernard Hinault a atteint en douze ans de carrière cycliste près de 95 % de ses objectifs. « Je montais sur mon vélo pour gagner. Le plaisir de dominer les autres me prodiguait une jouissance mentale, me permettait de serrer les dents sous la douleur, alors que d’autres levaient les pieds. » Cependant, pas de victoire sans équipe Leader charismatique, Bernard Hinault était à l’écoute de ses troupes, savait mener ses hommes et partageait largement avec eux les succès et la manne financière.
